    What is your favorite dessert? Jon says cake, Laura says ice cream. We also wanted to add that we know that you use WAY more than we did but we didn't know if we would like it, and also we wanted to taste the puddings themselves since it was our first time. Also, we were being conservative because we only have that 1 can and wanted to add it to some other things. Hope that all makes sense. Our syrup is Lyle's which comes in a green can, it's very similar to maple syrup but it's a thicker, sweeter consistency made from refined cane sugar. They have been making it since 1885 and are in the Guiness Book of Records as having the oldest recognised marketing design in their cans. Syrup sponge pudding should be served with lots of custard as it can be too sweet on its own. You'll find there's little rivers of syrup running through the custard making it even more delicious. Bear in mind the ones you have are the bottom price point of the market you'll understand why us Brits love our puddings.

    • @timaustin2000
      @timaustin2000 3 роки тому +3

      Golden Syrup was also a mistake: it is a waste product (or was considered so at the time) of the refining process. Someone at Lyle's tasted it out of curiosity and the rest is history.

    Golden syrup is a light treacle made from inverted sugar syrup not to be confused with corn syrup. Invented by chemists Tate and Lyle in 1885 in London. It is now made by American company Sugar refining under the Tate and Lyle brand. It is found in some Trader Joes and Walmart.

    Us Brits put custard on nearly every dessert. It needs to be hot and poured over at least half of the sponge puddings or apple pies, Jam Roly Poly, Spotted Dick, apple & Blackberry Crumble etc. It’s not used to cover up anything, it just adds to it.
    Apart from the ones you tried there are also Lemon sponge puddings, Raspberry sponge puddings and other flavours too.

    • @loveandjunkfood
      @loveandjunkfood  3 роки тому

      Yeah for sure. I wasn't saying that you use it to cover anything up. I was saying that it would be great for that. Kind of like when a cake here is plain or dry, we would add something else. Golden syrup is a light coloured treacle.
    In fact some parts of the UK call it treacle.
    PS. They're steamed puddings so served hot.
    You can have a steak with or without a sauce, same goes with puddings and sweet pies.
    The most popular pudding sauce is custard, then double cream.

  • @markanderson2401

And at school for lunch we had warm lemon curd on scratch lemon cake. I still make both of these today. Any sauce on cake, Count Me IN! Tonight? fresh raspberries macerated on top of frozen vanilla custard scoop and for me, the chocolate with raspberry. Yes, the kids are gone and it's time for something a little 'special'. Yum!

    Good way to make these home made is to add a spoon of the syrup, toffee or chocolate in the bottom of a microwaveable mug about half a tablespoon put cake mix ontop and cook in the microwave. Tap them out ontop a dish cover in custard. Great with jam in the bottom as well about a heaped teaspoon is enough.

    Now that's what i'm talking about i love eating stuff like this specially custard i literally warm it up and eat it as it is its so nice and actually easy to make from fresh it can be put on any desert its great on apple crumble i guess with desserts you could have with custard or ice cream but i do prefer custard, Unsure about America but in the UK as children at school there was a mint custard served on chocolate sponge cage and omg it was like heaven i'm pretty sure its not available now because this was years ago and only available for school so no one could buy it but there is recipes online on how to make the same mint custard. Golden Syrup is thick, sweat and sticky it can be used in a couple of applications really like on pancakes or porridge.

    🇬🇧 To us in the UK those puddings you tried are just quick pudding meals bought from the supermarket. You should try and make them yourself then you would really be talking british puddings. Tinned custard 🤮 the best custard is Birds Custard Powder made with milk, very easy to make. A lot of British people love custard especially the older generation who used to get served pudding & custard as part of their school meals. If you ever come to the UK try and visit The Pudding Club in Derbyshire, they get booked up a year in advance it’s that good.

    Golden syrup is quite an old fashioned ingredient. It traditionally is used in a sponge pudding, but also for drizzling on pancakes (crepes), on porridge and used in other baked goods. All of which go really well with vanilla ice cream. As do the other puddings you tried. I think if you ate a full portion you would want the custard, ice cream or fresh cream.
    You should google golden syrup and the best pre made STP is made by the Cartmel Bakery. They both may be available to buy. Enjoy.

    Making it yourself (or getting it from a restaurant) would be way better. The Kipling ones are fine if you are in a hurry (and I eat them myself), but if you make it yourself you will taste the difference. Personally I don't eat them with custard, but icecream can be good if the pudding is hot enough.
    If you like the golden syrup one, try a Rum Baba or a Caribbean ginger rum cake.
    Don't be too concerned about the expiry date on items from Europe. The dates here are actually 'best before' dates, which are not the same thing as an expiry date (you get extra time before they actually expire)

    Golden syrup was originally made to use up byproducts from sugar processing (as marmite was from the brewing process).
    Those cheap longlife puddings arent as nice as fresh but they can happily sit in the cupboard for months waiting for that moment when one fancies a little something sweet. The ones with sauce don't necessarily need anything extra.

    Golden syrup is my favourite. We don't use custard as a cover up, more an addition, as they go together like, say, bacon and eggs.

      Yes, for sure. I think that came out wrong. I was saying that on a moist cake, (like these are) it can enhance, but if there were to be a whoopsie in the kitchen or let's say get something store bought that was less than desirable, I'm sure that would make that go away!

    US custard (tastes more of eggs) it is so different from our custard in UK (creamy and sweet). Ice cream is good with these deserts too. Like most have mentioned these are not as good as homemade/restaurant made ...

    Treacle sponge or Syrup sponge is my fave too but the others are tied, I think you need the cream/custard to lessen the sweetness of the puds though. That may just be that I don't have a sweet tooth preferring savoury, and we've been brought up to eat it that way.

    Golden Syrup is really simple to make, there are lots of UA-cam videos on how to make it. If you chose to have custard with any of these desserts the idea is to pour it over them, if you like custard - just keep pouring. Ice cream is also good with any of them.

    As I understand it that Golden Syrup comes from part of the sugar refining process from both Sugar Cane and Sugar Beets . It is a light treacle (you would call treacle "molasses"), Light treacle however is more refined and has a very different flavour.
    I am not personally a fan of custard, and I agree with the person who suggests having it with vanilla ice cream.... but I would suggest making sure it is a good quality ice cream though.

    Sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream is the king of desserts. The only thing I've tried that even comes close to rivalling it is gulab jamun - an Indian dessert made from deep fried dough made of milk solids and then coated in a rose and jasmine syrup.

    For context, 'pudding' used in the traditional meaning as here, means 'steamed or boiled' so its not technically a cake how you think of it, because it isnt baked. And Golden Syrup is like a 'very light' molasses sugar syrup, and it comes in cans. Its funny you say it reminds you of pancakes, because thats a favourite for putting on them in the UK, in addition to being a common baking ingredient.

    • @loveandjunkfood
      @loveandjunkfood  3 роки тому +1

      That's great! I'm glad the pancakes was a good way to describe. Unfortunately, we struggle describing things to those that may have never tried things before. We know that if we are trying things from the UK, that we are not describing it to you all but more for others, and man is that tough! But, I love how you describe it here as it makes complete sense.

    One of my favourite versions of sticky toffee pudding is actually an "americanised" version from Pitt & Cue; made by cooking the dates/prunes in coke as the base of the cake, and then incorporating bourbon into the sauce. It's so good I cooked it as a christmas treat for my colleagues at work, and immediately got about 15 orders for it for people's Christmas dinners! Here's the recipe: spicyicecream.com.au/2015/08/sticky-date-bourbon-and-cola-pudding/

    Years ago there use to be something similar to those here. It was a
    Sauce n Cake Sponge Pudding Mix (Hot Caramel). It was like a magic cake. You put the ingredients in without mixing and it turns into cake with sauce. It was so yummy but unfortunately the company that made them (Dr. Oetker) discontinued them.😥

    you don't usually put Custard on the puddings you had, as they already have a sauce. you would put Custard on Spotted Dick, Jam Roly-Poly and fruit pies. cold Custard is also good on tinned fruit in the summer.
