    A first-rate 21 Red salute, Stivi! Love those mixes! Amazingly, even with this killer lineup, there are still maybe another dozen Daniel Smith reds. That's how deep their palette is. 😁🤩

    The Perylene red PR178 and the Rich Green Gold PY129 seem to give a quinacridone gold hue when mixed.

      Oh yes, the darkest values appear to suggest so. The mid-tone and lighter washes though tend to come off as PO48 + PO49 or even Quinacridone Deep Gold. Thank you for pointing that out and for being here!

    Great video! I love the Deep Scarlet...heck, all the scarlets! I always enjoy your mix section at the end. Hansa Med + Potter's Pink was very cool!

      Thank you! I can relate. Scarlets always get us! That PY97 + PR233 mix reminds me of the almost endless mustard field that I saw years ago while on a road trip near Brownsville, Oregon. PR233 makes the earthy aspect known without being overbearing. It allows us to get that textural element without adjusting the overall color profile. Many people unfamiliar with PR233 complain about its weak tinting nature when in fact, it is its true power. "Subtle sophistication" would be the best way to put it.

    I am drawn to Daniel Smith reds like the fire sign I am, especially, Pyrrol Red, Quin Rose, Quin Lilac, Indian Red, and Deep Scarlet. Your video made me fall in love with Perylene Red, PR178! I realize ive never tried their Red Jasper. Rhodonite Genuine is so pretty!

    Quinacridone coral is a lovely color indeed. And Daniel Smith's perylene maroon has a more violet-biased hue than pr179 from other manufacturers.

      I agree! PR209 is not just beautiful but it is also a robust mixing color. Speaking of beauty, Daniel Smith's PR179 is excellent for Autumn-themed floral gardens or for night scenes.

    I am trying to find a true red in Daniel Smith’s watercolors. I have deep scarlet which is close. I am not ready to buy a bunch of reds, I buy in terms of what I want to paint. I lived on the gulf in Florida for many years, so I am buying more greens and blues but I still want the other colors too. I want to paint the beach, now that I am living in Colorado again.

    • @stiviwonders
      @stiviwonders  4 місяці тому

      Whenever I need a red from their line-up, the easiest way for me is to choose from their Perylenes, Pyrrols, Benzimidazolones, and Quinacridones. I normally end up with PR254, PR175, and one of the Quinacridones.

    Can you share with us what tape you're using? Recently I have been having trouble keeping sharp edges 😢

    • @stiviwonders
      @stiviwonders  5 місяців тому +1

      I understand and sad to hear about the troubles you've been having when it comes to keeping sharp edges. The name of the tape is Nichiban #251 (I believe it's been renamed to 210 but the packaging still reflects 251). It comes in various sizes and for my swatches, I particularly enjoy the 9mm size. I would love to use something smaller but I haven't found them yet. One thing to note is that this tape works wonderfully if you're using high-quality 100% cotton watercolor paper such as Arches, Saunders Waterford, Hahnemühle, Sennelier, Winsor and Newton Professional or anything in that range that is 300GSM (and heavier). I use these on both 300GSM and 640GSM 100% cotton watercolor paper. The tape behaves differently, mostly unfavorably, when used on cellulose paper.
      I have gone through so many tapes, experimented and explored, and this tape from Nichiban wins this game. With right paper and good amount of pressure, the tape adheres nicely and tightly but offers a clean, non-abrasive release. It is absolutely refreshing to find a tape that works perfectly. This is a genuine experience and I am not sponsored or paid to say this. I hope this is helpful!

      Please don’t be sad. I love that one too! There will be a Part 2 at some point and as the saying goes, “save the best for last.” This was getting lengthier than I had planned so I had to mindfully choose what could fit thematically and what’s useful for first-time users. @@stiviwonders I’m outside if the US and I actually ordered from blick a few days ago 😂 I approved my order so hopefully I’ll receive it 👍 I heard mayan colors are generally hard to rewet. Is that why you don’t use it?

    • @stiviwonders
      @stiviwonders  5 місяців тому +2

      Ohhh, I am happy for you! I hope it gets there soon. Mayan watercolors are actually delightful to work with. These days, the opportunity to use Mayan Red has not presented itself. Resolubility is not an issue. You will just need to give them a bit more time to re-activate. Every pigment is different and Mayan watercolors are some of those that require a few more minutes, if not seconds. I hope this is helpful!
