This is a fantastic video. Your clarification of the song being a criticism of the government is objectively false. It's the lyrics of hateful person who wants to blame everyone including the people's he's supposedly trying to advocate for, the poor. He talks about starting a ministry with and reads Bible verses, and yet, didn't the Bible teach you to live thy neighbor? Not to judge others? That's a leadbelly song! The Nirvana thing...come on know your music history! Actually the song"in the pines" goes back before Leadbelly! I'm cool with him but the church thing sounds like a good tax write off! And yeah fu*k auto tune.
Saw him at brushy mountain prison earlier this year. The crowd kept trying to get a "fuck joe Biden" chant going. Oliver kept saying he wasn't on either side and the night wasn't about politics. It was clearly bothering him. I almost felt bad for him, but he should have known that would be his fte when he wrote the fudge rounds line. Its what he deserves. Fwiw I'm a demcorat and voted for Joe. I've been to dozens and dozens of concerts and that was the worst crowd I've ever seen at a concert. The venue sold out of beer in like half an hour, and after oliver refused to say FJB, mfs just started leaving. Dude was playing for half his original audience after like 5 songs.
Context for absolutely nobody that asked: Brushy mountain is a gorgeous, smoke friendly, awesome place to go to a concert. My friends that invited me bought my ticket. Oliver as an actual musician was actually pretty awesome. A solid guitar player and an emotional singer. But his mix was horrible. Definitely the direct result of trying to keep tickets cheap, rushing a tour from one song, and having an amateur sound crew.
The fudge round line isn't a political pointer. It's basic commen sence. If your asking for a hand out, for any reason, you shouldn't be getting snacks and fast food. Good healthy meals. Luxury items shouldn't be government funded
@@ponderin I guess that's why there will always be 2 types of people. One type sees fudge rounds as a "luxury item" And one type that sees fudge rounds as "food stamp food"
Politics is just a hot topic and one "side" or the other most don't listen or want to communicate clearly and concise. Not choosing is a stance is a cop out.......
That's horseshit. I'm a leftist and I believe in the first and second amendment. More important than that is the third and fourth amendment, which the first and second help protect. You don't need to be a conservative just because you want to protect speech and guns.
Same right here dude. I would describe myself as a leftist and I own an AR-15 as well as a few other guns I'm not going to mention. I hate this idea that people believe you have to be conservative to care about the Constitution and that's just not true. What I don't do is make my entire personality about the second amendment. I don't have a we the people tattoo or have it as a sticker on my truck. I don't even like Oliver Anthony's song because it made all of the wrong people excited. And even when he walked it back, he still went on to a bunch of conservative talk shows and even UA-cam channels because he became a conservative hero.
He punches up at rich men but in the same breath, he also punches down at poor people exactly like the rich men want us all to do. He sings that if you’re obese and poor, you don’t deserve to eat chocolate. He attacks a system that he likely benefitted from when he was injured and unable to work.
You shouldn't get luxury items on tax dollars. You should get healthy nourishing meals i work 60 hours aweek. I should be able to buy MY KIDS fudge rounds. But for some reason, wealthfare families have more in the cabinets than working families.
@@ponderin You still believe what the billionaires pay Fox News to spoon feed you. I feel sorry for you. Poor people are not the problem. It’s the mega rich not paying their taxes and corporations not paying you a living wage so you don’t have to work 60 hours a week.
@@WeCantAffordThat explain how a fudge round is needed to live.. you don't need chocolate to stay alive. You need nourishment. Only a privileged lefty would act like the third world has even such a LUXURY
And you choose to ignore the obvious message he was conveying; namely that while the rich men devise new ways to keep us perpetually in servitude to the system that is screed in their favor, there are lazy, “smart” people who take advantage of the system and waste the tax dollars that hardworking people, like he and I, and presumably you as well, have paid into the system in good faith.
Watched a video of Oliver Anthony singing Ole Red in a coal mine. He did something Metallica has never done. Metallica has played on all continents including Antarctica. Never played in a coal mine. Oliver is an amazing singer that will stay true to his beliefs.
17:41 this is the same as complaining about a sound engineer mixing your live set as you play… even good ol’ Oliver here would have needed EQing and compression for that rich sound his voice gives. If he were all about natural, he’d put the guitar down and just sing without it… it’s a man made instrument that assists in making music… OR is he a hypocrite? Again, he’s a thorn in the side of the real.
Mark my words, this guy is going to implode. The struggles with mental illness and addiction are no joke, and if one knows what to look for, one can see it all in him. It's there in the self-righteous messianic complex. He's a dude living in the woods with his dogs, sitting in the rain smoking weed, who's going to leave music and start a "ministry", and institute all of these grand plans to save the poor and suicidal and addicted. I really hope I'm wrong, but all the markers are there.
@@F14Goose37 I know so. From a technical and music theory perspective, Zach Bryan is significantly more talented. That is unless Oliver Anthony does more than a single hit
@nstuey6974 I honestly don't listen to Oliver, and have maybe heard his Rich Men song maybe three or four times. I used to like Zach Bryan when he was an active duty sailor singing to his phone. When the production value increased, I was happy to see it because I love seeing people work their ass off and succeed, especially veterans (sorry, a bit of tribalism there). When he started whining about not getting nominated for a CMA, that's where he lost me though. I love honest folk/country music that is not trying to pander to an audience, but is written and sung from a place of experience and having something worth sharing. Zach Bryan's music was, and probably still is that, but all I can hear anymore is a whiny man child who "doesn't care about awards", but "don't be ridiculous, a grammy is totally different." I understand music theory and songwriting, and you are probably right. I still just think Zach Bryan is insufferable and Oliver Anthony apparently has the principles that Zach Bryan pretends to have. Just my point of view though.
Every z list 'celebrity' knows once you fail at music or movies you can always have a second crack at lining your pockets via the religion gravy train or the billion dollar conspiracy industry , both of which have very blurred lines between each other.....But both are really selling ppl the same thing...
Country and folk music thrives on ambiguity, ambivalence, and self-doubt. This (allegedly astroturfed) stuff is severely lacking. He might be a nice guy, but the idea of a "raw/unfiltered/pure/authentic" and therefore superior music is overly simplistic and reductive. American roots music, from its early recorded beginnings in stuff like the Harry Smith Anthology or American Folk Music is constantly recreating and reinventing the myths of its origins and identity. I think Oliver Anthony's music suffers from a lack of this artistic awareness. Good on him for trying to help out people. But his art is subpar.
6:45 oh no, that welfare comment is real. I live next door to a wonderful family of really nice obese people who’s entire monthly food intake is paid for by the government assistance programs like welfare. They eat fudge, cake, candy, and drink energy drinks. That song is soooooo true.
And the issue taken with the line isn't that it doesn't happen. It was that it's in no way a cause of any of the problems the song was eluding to. But rather a result of a system that organized itself in a way that makes cheap, processed, unhealthy food, more readily available and less expensive than healthier fresh food. A problem those people have no real power to change, and policing what individual people eat as a requirement for thier ability to be able to eat isn't a solution. The irony is it also requires a call for an increase of government bureaucracy, regulation, and expenditures by the very people who demand less of the very things. Funny how that works.
@@joshuapowers4623it's all about small government until it's something that conservatives are pissed off about. They want small government when it comes to firearms and their right to homeschool their children and by homeschool throwing them out into a garden and trying to justify it by saying it's a biology lesson. But when it comes to two girls getting married or a person who feels like they were born into the wrong body, surgically altering themselves and using their first amendment right to live the life they want and pursuing their happiness. They want government regulations. I mean, for God's sake I think it was either Oklahoma or Ohio that made a law banning trans people from performing in high school sports because one trans girl was in a swim team. Think about that. An entire state made a law banning a certain demographic to affect one goddamn person. They are not the party of small government. Conservatives could care less about small government when it comes to punishing the people they want punished
But that's not really their fault. Instead of blaming that family blame a system that has made all of this garbage, food, cheap and easy to procure. And like the other guy in this comment section said to police what people use their food stamps on it would require an entire new layer of government bureaucracy. So what do you want exactly? I always thought conservatives were the party of small government but y'all aren't. Y'all want plenty of government when it comes to stupid shit like policing what people on welfare buy with their food stamps or what genitals a person has to enter a certain bathroom
From what I picked he’s kinda doing the music through the ministry if that makes sense. Still gonna make music and put it out but kinda do a lot of live shows his way
@rainydaywoman_12_35 jesse does play on words like crazy and puts out songs so fast. His playing is great and the music is never boring like a lot of lyric based writers. Plus his voice is so nice. I feel like oliver just yells and people think that makes him a good singer

Context for absolutely nobody that asked:
Brushy mountain is a gorgeous, smoke friendly, awesome place to go to a concert.
Dang yeah that’s real interesting and kinda crazy
The fudge round line isn't a political pointer. It's basic commen sence. If your asking for a hand out, for any reason, you shouldn't be getting snacks and fast food. Good healthy meals. Luxury items shouldn't be government funded
@@ponderin I guess that's why there will always be 2 types of people. One type sees fudge rounds as a "luxury item"
And one type that sees fudge rounds as "food stamp food"
Politics is just a hot topic and one "side" or the other most don't listen or want to communicate clearly and concise. Not choosing is a stance is a cop out.......
He’s why the people spoke. I told everyone that he would be the reason. He showed its ok to put this out. And so did many others, with their vote.
Oh gawd not this song again lol
He punches up at rich men but in the same breath, he also punches down at poor people exactly like the rich men want us all to do. He sings that if you’re obese and poor, you don’t deserve to eat chocolate. He attacks a system that he likely benefitted from when he was injured and unable to work.
You shouldn't get luxury items on tax dollars. You should get healthy nourishing meals i work 60 hours aweek. I should be able to buy MY KIDS fudge rounds. But for some reason, wealthfare families have more in the cabinets than working families.
@@ponderinbro thinks fudge rounds are luxury items lol
Hahaha true! Saw that too
17:41 this is the same as complaining about a sound engineer mixing your live set as you play… even good ol’ Oliver here would have needed EQing and compression for that rich sound his voice gives. If he were all about natural, he’d put the guitar down and just sing without it… it’s a man made instrument that assists in making music… OR is he a hypocrite? Again, he’s a thorn in the side of the real.
RadioWV is great, He's not even the best on there
There are so many good ones on there it’s crazy
So now he’s the rich guy buying up rural land and he’s changing to a ministry to avoid paying taxes?
That’s a huge reach cmon
Mark my words, this guy is going to implode. The struggles with mental illness and addiction are no joke, and if one knows what to look for, one can see it all in him. It's there in the self-righteous messianic complex. He's a dude living in the woods with his dogs, sitting in the rain smoking weed, who's going to leave music and start a "ministry", and institute all of these grand plans to save the poor and suicidal and addicted.
I really hope I'm wrong, but all the markers are there.
Man I hope you're wrong too, but I've seen this movie before and it doesn't end great.
Dude wants to be 'spiritual'....they all say that. Religion sells and mostly a business front.
He's married i believe so hopefully that won't happen.
So in other words, Oliver Anthony is everything Zach Bryan wishes he was.
Except an actually good musician
Yes, but Zach Bryan is actually talented beyond a single song
@@nstuey6974 If you say so
@@F14Goose37 I know so.
Sorry bro but you can’t compare this guy to Cobain. I’m sorry you just can’t. Not even close.
The chords or the progressions sound similar in that song, that’s what I was saying, not the voices
Where is Cobain?
@thewesternside and you absolutely correct.
Every z list 'celebrity' knows once you fail at music or movies you can always have a second crack at lining your pockets via the religion gravy train or the billion dollar conspiracy industry , both of which have very blurred lines between each other.....But both are really selling ppl the same thing...
Oliver should get together with Tom Macdonald
He should have stuck with writing music and singing instead of doing this ministry stuff
but there are obviously petos below virginia 🤨 100% great attempt to bring attention to the most important cause tho
Baby's first protest song 🙄
He sold out. Weaksauce
He needs to continue the music not the ministry
From what I picked he’s kinda doing the music through the ministry if that makes sense. Still gonna make music and put it out but kinda do a lot of live shows his way
😂 never heard it
He had his moment but it's time to sit down, oliver, we now have jesse welles
Dude he’s been blowing up! Legend folk songwriter too
A much better player and a much MUCH better lyricist. He is explicitly political in a way Oliver Anthony was not.
@rainydaywoman_12_35 jesse does play on words like crazy and puts out songs so fast. His playing is great and the music is never boring like a lot of lyric based writers. Plus his voice is so nice. I feel like oliver just yells and people think that makes him a good singer
He writes jingles.....and every song sounds the same.
Who?
Seems like this guy disappeared right around the time he cashed in.
Great music but he is a iij industry plant.....to perfect timing and song content
Terrible music
Where did you sleep last night iant a Nirvana song.
What a grifter.
How?
This guy Oliver gets it he took his 15 minutes he got out of the hole he was in and let it go that Haley spit girl.... I refuse to say the other thing.... girl just lost her mind
His plumber ruined his career… hahahaha
He definitely isn’t a republican. He cares too much about other people.
He's a good old fashioned socially conscious red neck of Appalachia.
@@HimWitDaHair98 hope he’s not the last of them.
Remember when the maga cult thought this song was for them
Remember when you voted for a fake black woman 😂😂😂😂
He might consider himself a conservative, but he cares too much about other people in order to be a republican.
Because it is for most of the maga supporters
@@liamli7478 No it's not, it's for the every day person. It's for anyone that can relate
Remember when what?
