  • My current boat has been neglected its entire life until I bought it a month ago. It has taken lots of time to get the gel coat to come back out. It looks 100x better than it started, but i'm still not completely satisfied. A fix is going to be coming here soon, so stay tuned for another episode of that!
In todays video, I go over all the steps involved in wet sanding and buffing a boat gel coat to restore it to like new condition. Although the video is done showing the restoration of the inside of the boat, it is the same steps used on the outside of the boat too.

After I removed the clearcoat that the previous owner had put on my 1991 ranger I used protec as well and it turned out amazing

Thank you. I followed your instructions to the T. It took me 1-1/2 days of hand sanding and two weekends. Looks great!

Great video! I've been doing finish correction on cars for many years, including many fiberglass bodied Corvettes. I use basically the same sequence you are doing, and it can really make some great finishes. Of course, on a metalflake boat, you have a certain thickness of clear gelcoat, and you don't want to go so deep that you get into the flake layer. But you have found that happy medium where you correct the surface without getting into the flakes. Nice job!

I appreciate it man. I’m to a point to where I’d like to continue, but I don’t think I can wet sand anymore without having reverse effects. My uncle owns a vinyl wrap business and said he can get a black with metal flake wrap and possibly just do the black on the boat and blend it in to where you couldn’t even tell it’s wrapped

@@CrankinWithChristian Wow. I didn't know they could just wrap part of it. That would be interesting to see.

How bad does a boat gel have to be, before you're not able to restore it to its original finish? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot believe you are telling people to let compound sit on the gel. It will not perform correctly if it dries. It needs to be wet to work.

Doesn’t last without a new gel coat.
