I Photographed The 10 Elements Of Composition

  • There are ten elements of composition in photography (well, sorta!) and I wanted to challenge myself to photograph all of them in one day. So, I went to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado and spent almost 24 hours straight doing photography.
    All in all, I had fun and got several photos that I like. Are they good representations of the elements of composition in photography? You be the judge :)
    For what it's worth, those ten elements of composition are:
    1. Points
    2. Lines
    3. Shapes
    4. Texture
    5. Color
    6. Tone
    7. Distance
    8. Balance
    9. Space
    10. Patterns

    Have watched many youtube videos on photography and I have to say Spencer Cox has a way of explaining photography that makes it easier to understand. He makes you want to get out there and look for the 10 elements of composition in your next photography trip. Love the videos thanks

    Excellent video. I have watched many videos on composition and storytelling and this is one of the best. You explain things so clearly and very much to the point, no faffing around. Thank you for the work you have put into making these videos and for sharing your expertise.

    Thank you for a really good video Spencer. I am really impressed with your ability to explain these things in a way that is both easy to understand and apply - and thus motivating for getting out to take more (well thought out) images. And, great photos btw! :-) I would love to see many more videos like this.

    Excellent video. Your description of the emotion of the photos is a stark realization for me as to what is lacking in my pictures. I can get some great shots, technically good, some good composition but I can never find the emotion when I am taking pictures because I am too focused on the technical. I will try to find it from now on. Thank you for the education.

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  4 роки тому +1

      Right on! The creative side of things is surely the most important part of photography. If you get mired in the technical side too much, I recommend slowing down and taking more time to do both. It’s hard to go wrong with a slow and steady approach, assuming your subject isn’t moving too fast.

    Thank you for this video. It has helped me organize my trouts on composition. I’ve added two more to you list: Frame & Focus.
    Frame - vignettes, tree branches/limbs/trunks.
    Focus - selective, depth-of-field, bokeh.

    Excellent summation of the all-important details that make up a successful photo. Composition, or the act of "composing" those details is indeed the secret to photographic success and this video did a great job of illustrating that. I do, however, have one minor reservation pertaining to the Tree/Mountain Peak image you used to illustrate balance. Given the relative actual physical weights of the two in reality I felt the tree needed to be closer to the left edge of the composition. As presented the image felt to me like it was in eminent danger of tipping over to the right.

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  4 роки тому

      Much appreciated, Boatman, and you bring up some important points. First off, the fact that the photo leans one way or another to you isn't a huge surprise - all of these elements of composition, and maybe *specifically* balance, have different effects for different people. Beyond that, one interesting thing about the tree/mountain image in particular is that the visual weight it has depends somewhat on how large you see the photo. At thumbnail size, the tree is a big dark blob, and the mountain is hardly visible, therefore the photo probably leans too much to the left (even for you, I'd bet). When more details are visible in the mountain, that effect starts to go away and even reverse completely.
      Lastly, although it *is* relevant, the actual mass of the object in question isn't the only predictor of an element's visual weight in photography. For example, one object with pretty much the highest visual weight in photography is a person's face. Our eyes are much more likely to gravitate toward someone's face before than the peak of a mountain in almost any photo. That's not to say you are incorrect about the way this photo is balanced, of course. The fact that you and I would compose that shot differently is a nice illustration that every photographer's style is unique!

    The contrasts shown @ 2:57 caught my eye, not the least of which was the contrast between the vast landscape and your shadow. I enjoy your work very much!

      Much appreciated, Michael! This place is a paradise for filming B-roll, and I’m happy you liked that shot. I was lucky that it was a sunny morning for the shadows and abstract shots. The day after I filmed this, there was a storm coming in.

      Much appreciated, Peter! Yes, I have a few problems with the rule of thirds and wouldn’t recommend it in as a method of composition.

    Great video. What was the camera you used for vlogging when you were in the car? The footage was so bad at the end, I thought the ISO will collapse and the camera explode :)

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  4 роки тому

      Yep, I could tell even on the small screen that the quality was getting atrocious, so I knew I had to jump back to the studio! I filmed that part and all the other vlogging parts with the iPhone 11 Pro on a gimbal. I thought it worked surprisingly well when there was some light. And even worse than I'd have thought when there wasn't :)

    That was a great demonstration of those elements.
    How do you feel about transitions as an element of composition? Light to dark, warm to cool (color), smooth to textured?
    I've seen reference to this, but not as an element of composition.

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  4 роки тому +1

      Good question, Steve. There's no hard rule defining what is or isn't an element of composition, and transitions definitely wouldn't be out of place in this group. A harsh transition is akin to high contrast - it often feels jarring, attracts the eye, and makes the photo more intense. That's obviously true when light and dark are the variables we're talking about, but also true with regards to texture or really anything else. Smooth transitions by comparison are more often found in gentler images. So, thanks for bringing this one up, and I'm happy you liked the video!

      I mainly use the Nikon Z6 and Z7 these days! I took that with the Z6 I think. A solid tripod is more important than the camera though.
