Julia354 i met many people who are arrogant and be cool . I rather have someone i can be joking around with all day and have good time . In real life cris evan is the one that gets the females.
I don't want to be the coolest person in the room though. When i bring people together I want to play them up, give them openings to share fun stories, etc. Sometimes a group just needs someone earnest, a bit of a background character, ready to be self depricating. I never really thought about it like this before - I LOVE this channel.
The fact that Chris can laugh it off n doesn't take it personally tells a lot about his character and that he is a confident human being and almost nothing can get him down.
@@van-hieuvo8208 this. What makes RDJ cool and not just arrogant & cocky is that we know he's earned it, paid his dues, and most of us know it intuit that he's actually a good person underneath. Without all that backdrop to his persona, his mannerisms would just come off as a jerk.
I think an interesting point to note here is that being very famous adds an entirely new benefit to these styles of communication. These concepts are certainly applicable for anyone, but it's important to remember that you will not be viewed as a "prize" to be won over by the people around you automatically, and acting in these ways (especially like Robert) is very likely to make most people just think you're arrogant. Yes, it can be done, but it's insanely difficult for an average person to find that balance. Robert has the benefit of his fame doing a bit of that balancing for him, because people already want him to like them before even entering the conversation. So, if you want to be the distracted, envied, cool guy - tone it down, and be super careful.
@@NoMoreMyFriend-S depends though. Many women are into bad/cool guys cause it's "hotter" in some way, while others are into the sweet, humble guys (I'm into the 2nd, but I can respect other opinions)
The biggest mystery in my mind is how RDJ was able to pull off those sarcastic and "I'm the best guy in the room" jokes without people seeing him as arrogant or pretentious. In fact, everyone (I myself included) seems to appreciate him for that attitude.
Because he’s one of the biggest stars Hollywood has ever had and arguably the greatest in the last decade. I’m not a fan and I don’t think his acting is particularly all that great. But he’s an icon and he has the accolades, he can do whatever because he’s been through so much.
Because he treats people good. He loves his fans. Movie crew/staff members have appreciated him multiple times for his polite behaviour. They also said he is never late for film shooting. Whenever new actor is hired for MCU, he calls them and make them feel comfortable and special. So it is easy to say that he is not arrogant type. And he's just being sarcastic
Its his in front of camera persona i think. And he just the regular genuine funny guy to the people around him. So that's why people didnt take his sarcasm seriously
I think it’s in the body language, but also there’s something about the way he says those things that make you know it’s sarcasm. Real arrogant people are not fun, and I’ve been around a lot of them.
This all comes down to playing with status (see Keith Johnstone's book "Impro"). Both men are confident, but one asserts high status at every opportunity, and one enjoys elevating other peoples' status (either by lowering his own, or raising the other person's) I think RJD enjoys being high status. He's been a movie star for a lot longer and is used to it. Chris Evans is more modest and humble. I think their individual personality traits had a lot to do with the Marvel roles they each got.
RDJ also fought his way through he'll and back. I think that on top of his natural ease and timing just gives him an air of natural confidence these days.
Honestly, as a child I did not like RDJ. When I watched iron man I was not impressed because his character was so cocky that he would come off rude. As an adult now I can find humor in his actions.
I could watch Robert Downey Jr. videos all day long and never be that cool. It’s a gift and he’s a brilliant guy who has been in show business his whole life. He’s a master of timing and quick wit. I do appreciate the dynamic breakdown of his social skills, however, to the extent a mere mortal can learn from it. I will have to be satisfied with being the coolest one in the accounting department. You work with what you got.
Dilan Gilluly Idk if I am familiar with either enough to agree with you, but I will say that the difference is that a leader leads by example, fighting along side those who look to him. He(she) is generally not as much appointed as recognized and chosen. Whereas a boss usually is more likely to tell you what to do not do it themselves, and they will always be placed in that position or self-appointed, delegating tasks to those under his/her charge.
The video started off with calling them both leaders. Just in different ways. It also talked about how each person sees these guys differently as a leader figure. I guess you see Cap as a leader while other (me included) see Iron Man as a leader.
Bumper is correct in his assessment, as both RDJ and Tony Stark are ENTP's. Your statement is close, but not comple. The difference between Chris Evans and Cap are that CE is an ISFJ and Cap is an ISTJ. Chris cares way more about your feelings and what you think about him, and your comfort level, than does Cap. Cap's F and T scores aren't as far apart as Tony's F and T scores are. This is why so many say that Cap is so dull, while people largely say that Chris Evans is so cool, or is just the nicest guy. Cap is more duty focused, Chris is people focused, which is generally more likable when compared apples to apples.RDJ and Tony Stark do not suffer any such distinctions when compared apples to apples.
ExplosiveCherry Keanu is the type of guy who’s presence on its own is cool, he doesn’t need to joke or say anything to be perceived as cool. His positive reputation also helps.
Dude your videos are mindblowing. these frameworks i wouldnt have been able to put em together but seeing these really puts it into perspective. if u came up with these urself then youre a genius. if you adapted them from other self help materials ur still a genius
+WILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL I think he took a great amount of inspiration from The Confidence Quadrant (via The Happiness Equation by Neil Pasricha) but still the way its applied to real life situations, and the analysis he is doing is extremely well done
if you watch early chris evans interviews from the 1st cpt america he clearly was still finding his own shoes to be comfortable in, brie larson is still very young also. try to remember where downey was at her age... Honestly yeah she not that engaging on or off screen to me thus far, but the on screen part has more to do with a weak script/story imo. i used to think robert pattinson was a no-talent lamer as well
It’s easier to be likeable than cool, cool requires more quick thinking, likeable is just being agreeable which can almost come off as a lack of self confidence
So I was just watching a couple of interviews with RDJ and Tom Holland for Spiderman (especially on Kimmel), and I was remembering this video. But I thought how interesting it is how different RDJ was in these interviews ... he seemed to be using his charisma to almost continuously push focus onto Tom Holland (who is himself pretty charming and charismatic) and he was much more open about laughing at his jokes etc. I thought that might also be an interesting study as well, how he may use his draw of the audience to actually benefit the other guy in an interview when he wants to. He could easily have dominated but you can see how giving he is to Tom Holland, and I think that translates into Tom Holland's relaxed confidence as well? It's maybe similar to what you were saying Chris Evans does, but I just found the contrast really interesting in this case.
Interesting... So do you think RDJ is "nicer" towards Tom Holland because of Holland... Or more because RDJ just felt like he was too much on the 'cool guy' side and he needs to change a little? And what is about Holland that made the change?
I think this video is incredibly useful in the business world. I run a financial firm from home. I feel the RDJ approach is best taken for people your are training or helping in your business and the Chris Evans approach is best for talking to your clients. I find this pretty interesting for a random UA-cam video lol
You can tell however, when RDJ is actually joking, and when he's serious. In the former case, there's usually a bit of a wry smile and a glint in his eyes, in the latter he's just blunt, preceded by looking off to the side (i.e. towards the camera/audience) as if he's saying "What the hell is up with this guy?", and will respond to the insulted reaction with a half hearted quip designed only to placate the target. Compare his reaction to Fallon to Kimmel or any other talk show host. Also note the difference when he's honestly being thankful, or expressing apologies to someone, and his "Would've been great to have you there" response. Also note very similar reactions to that interviewer he walked out on. It's *very* clear that he doesn't care for Fallon at all. Which IMO is good taste - as Fallon tends to have the habit of getting way too blubbery and giggly
Men can handle Robert's sarcasm a lot better than women, and women are generally more socially aware, so most of them will appreciate Chris' qualities better. Calling a man a simp just because he handles interactions differently just shows how childish you still are at the moment. My boy. :)
Years ago I used to be a huge Iron man fan. I idolized that sarcastic and flamboyant personality and found the character endlessly cool. But as I grew older I gravitated toward Cap more and more. Something about his genuity and unwavering moral center is very inspiring and reassuring. As a woman, I think that the cool persona is a lot more attractive than the giver persona, but at the end of the day as one grows up to be more cynical and experienced, you will fall in love with someone who makes you feel safe and content. So yeah, I would take the giver over the coolest guy in the room.
I agree. I am a female with social anxiety. I wish I came across as more confident and I am working on it. And I think Tony Stark IS cool in certain ways (I like him more as the series progresses)...but some of the things mentioned in the video I would never want to do even if I came across as more confident (such as make a joke at another person's expense. I just would never do that). In real life...the Captain America personality would put me more at ease. Ideally...a humble person who knows how to tease but does not push it too much. And yeah. I agree. No poking fun at anyone. And if someone looks uncomfortable - ideally they stop). Now I am trying to imagine a character that would be a blend of personalities. Star Lord, maybe?
I'm autistic and this video was very informative. In my own experience I struggle to make eye contact, I used to look downwards which made me seem like I was less confident than I was. Then I watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and noticed Downey's lack of eye contact. But he did it in a cool way, his body language is very confident, as you say, his lack of eye contact makes your audience try harder to gain your attention. Pair that with a dry sense of humour and I suddenly became popular. At the same time I am a giver, I want people to feel comfortable and that I am listening and that I care. So there absolutely is a perfect balance you can strike.
Connor Coulson "I'm Autistic and this video was very informative" I couldn't help but laugh at that, seems like something I'll find a user using it as a joke.
IMHO, being the coolest guy in the room is all about security and confidence in yourself. Just own what you have and who you are. That's why everyone likes these two, they're unapologetically them and they stand up for what they believe in.... which is cool!
Good point and I wouldn't be surprised if they touch on these kinds of ideas with their managers/PR guys before doing interviews, speeches, etc. With millions of dollars on the line, they're not going to just "wing it".
@@allfootychannel Still good because Captain Marvel is not a good person, for example what she was going to do too Miles if Captain America didn't come and stop it.
I prefer to be around people like Chris who are guileless and consider the feelings of others during interactions rather than people who adopt methods to appear cool - methods which often involve manipulation and narcissism to cause people to continuously feel unbalanced in their presence. I like Robert Downey, love his movies. If I were by some serendipitous fate given a choice, I'd definitely rather hang out with Chris Evans.
If I tried the Tony approach, I'd come off as a dick. He does it so perfectly, and that's something I could never emulate regularly. I think I'm more of a balance between the two. More Tony around large groups of people and more Cap around friends.
I mean, though you are putting on an act to an extent to further how cool you look, you can't just go out one day and act like Tony Stark. You still the the props to back it up.
Yeah, with that list, now I'm thinking he should be a little bit cooler. I want to see more funny rolls like back to school NO NUKES!!! The fact that he worked with Dangerfield alone makes him cool. Man to see and here the stuff when the cameras weren't rolling, he must have some good stories.
Honestly, the best way to go about it is to mix it up. If you have too much Captain, people may think you're too prudish. If you do too much RDJ, well, you better know self defense and be fucking smart. I know guys who try to pull an RDJ and trust me they don't have either the smarts or self defense knowledge to pull it off and come across as aresholes...
Robert has a great habit of involving others in conversation though. You'll see in many interviews with other people he often switches the focus with a question to someone who isn't as involved in the conversation or who's not as well known.
This is why I love RDJ. I know some people might find his personality obnoxious, and that's obviously chill, but there is so much self-assured behavior to be learned from him. Confidence is his superpower and he wields it in a way that rarely makes him seem genuinely mean-spirited.
Jokes are definitely riskier because the other person has to be on the same page as you, otherwise they either don't get it (and feel like an idiot) or think that you're mocking them. Culture also puts huge barriers to landing jokes. If you put Downey in a room full of people who don't know him or his sense of humor, he'd just look like an arrogant asshole. But he doesn't because audiences are familiar with him. I noticed this pattern while playing Boxers or Briefs. You can tell who is the cool jokster or the likable one based on which way they go: landing the right jokes and silly remarks or landing the truth and connecting with the person that way. Great video. Keep them coming :]
It is a social party game. You play with a group of 4-6 friends. Each player gets 5 statement cards that have 6 statements on them. They all begin the same "I am..." "I like.." "I don't..." "I want..." "I have..." "I.." and some random statements after them. You go around in a circle and each person rolls a 6-sided dice that correstponds with a statement starter (I am... etc.) Then everyone else has to look at the statements they have on their cards and pick one that describes their friend. The friend that you are describing gets to pick 2 winners; a true statement and a funny statement. The person with the true statement is awarded a "boxer" token to indicate they won a round, and the person with the funniest statement is awarded a "brief" token to indicate they won a round. And you play and play until I think someone wins a total of 7 tokens. (It's been a while, so my numbers may be off, but that is the basic game play.) It's a super fun game because you get to know your friends better. Over time, you may notice a pattern... People generally win more boxers or briefs because they are either good at reading a person, or they are very funny. It's a fun game, you should get it and play with your friends! boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/26516/boxers-or-briefs
Also RDJ is humble and does give credit to his friends that he works with even though he has the bravado. Chris is humble bc he turned down the Cap role so many times that after the success he realized he could have lost it all.
I followed Robert Downey Jr since he used to have the Robert Downey Jr show. He really has not changed that much only the direction of his life has changed as he took on more positive directions.
You try to spend more time with those who laugh at your jokes. *This is the reason why I find Robert being happy with Chris Evans* Chris Evans is a great guy who actually elevates the fellow speaker's impact.
7:41 "The truth is that sarcastic jokes with no release that are at someone's expenses, do not make people feel good -- even if your close. It makes them wonder if you like them no matter how long you've been friends. That feeling just sits."
I'm always afraid I will come off as a jerk or accidentally insult someone, so I get overly nice. If I break out the passive aggressive, you've done something wrong.
I decided a while back to not worry about it. I have detractors, but overall I have way more people laughing and listening than the few that can't deal with my point of view. The reason is my point of view usually doesn't jibe with their perception of what THEY think I am, so my personality simply carries the day usually.
Take it from me. My charisma carries A LOT of sarcasm with it. And once you get into it, you can't help but use sarcasm in almost every conversation you have. It literally becomes a part of you once you get comfortable with it.
when Robert and jimmy are talking about the invitation there dialog wasn't real. They were both playing the roles that they had just given each other do to their conversation. They were ad-libbing and playing off each other so everything was meant to be funny.
This is simple... so Robert is from New York which is pretty aggressive place, whereas Chris is from Boston... which is pretty much Canada, so yeah, there's that.

@@vinodkumaraug You go, girl.
Hi ooo

@@NoMoreMyFriend-S Most are into the bad/cool guys but then they grow out of it in their 30's/40's.
Because his expressions are great enough to show you he's joking. Why? Because he's a *professional actor.*
It is possible to be the coolest guy in the room Unless Rdj is in the same room

This all comes down to playing with status (see Keith Johnstone's book "Impro"). Both men are confident, but one asserts high status at every opportunity, and one enjoys elevating other peoples' status (either by lowering his own, or raising the other person's)
I think RJD enjoys being high status.

Dilan Gilluly Idk if I am familiar with either enough to agree with you, but I will say that the difference is that a leader leads by example, fighting along side those who look to him. Whereas a boss usually is more likely to tell you what to do not do it themselves, and they will always be placed in that position or self-appointed, delegating tasks to those under his/her charge.

Hi new subscriber! Could you make one of Don Rickles? Why a funny guy like him can get away for ages with basically any joke.
We know who we want to be. Videos like this help us get there
You can tell however, when RDJ is actually joking, and when he's serious.

You're talking about RDJ involving Paul in that Kimmel interview right?
This is why I love RDJ. I know some people might find his personality obnoxious, and that's obviously chill, but there is so much self-assured behavior to be learned from him. Confidence is his superpower and he wields it in a way that rarely makes him seem genuinely mean-spirited.
He is a pussycat❤
Robert wasn't joking...he didn't want Fallon there. Completely understandable
Yeah i suffer with this. Btw, what is boxers and briefs?
(It's been a while, so my numbers may be off, but that is the basic game play.)
It's a super fun game because you get to know your friends better. Over time, you may notice a pattern... People generally win more boxers or briefs because they are either good at reading a person, or they are very funny. It's a fun game, you should get it and play with your friends! boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/26516/boxers-or-briefs
