The craftsmanship in the writing, production, acting and soundscapes was unmatched in the '40s. But as you said, there really are no words to express it. Like any of the best experiences, words fail. I also can't quite express how much enjoyment I've gotten from listening to..."Suspense!"
Of all the vintage radio programs I've heard, Suspense was the very best, till the late 40's when several more adult series came about. Escape, Gun Smoke, Dragnet & several others, all trying to compete with TV for audience ears.
I love Lights Out!! Lights Out, Suspense and Mysterious Traveler (I think it’s called) are my favorite horror radio shows. I’m in my 30s and these have become my absolute favorite way to pass the time!! Such a different time in the world, good and bad. I like that I have to use my imagination.
I know! Imagine a time when there was no TV and people didn't have their noses stuck to a phone or some other little screen. I usually listen to these in the dark, in my bed till I fall asleep. "Escape" is another really well written and produced one with a few horror episodes. I'm sure you've listened to the other old supernatural and horror series of the '40s. There's a Vincent Price collection that's fun too. The storytelling was different back then, and that, I think is part of the time traveling experience. Have you found CBS Mystery Theater from the late '70s yet? I was around 20 then and wish I'd known of it in those days. I would have loved it and I can imagine my stoner buddies and I listening to it while high. But we didn't. Those days are long gone, but these old shows take me to all kinds of fantasy worlds without mind altering substances. Thanks for telling me how much you love these. the quality on this one is a lot lower than the rest so far. The actors are trying too hard with the "evil poor people" accents to do any actually good acting.
Thanks for putting these up. It's like a time capsule of entertainment and storytelling and broadcast production. Fun stories as well.
