  • Hello everyone this is my Revopoint Mini Review. I tried doing something that most reviewers didn't do or go over. What I cut out from the video was that it took about 6 attempts to scan the dash before finally getting something useful.

    Writing this as of mid-April 2023. In between mid-February when you published this video, and now, Revopoint's public-beta testing RevoScan 5, which should make the scanner much more usable than it was with the 4.2 or 4.3 version you were using in the review.
    It *is* beta software, and I myself am having an issue with my old old old laptop and the Windows version.
    But, the Android version of Revoscan 5 runs rings around the 4.3 version I have on the PC, when I was scanning a foot-powdered brake shield.
    It was a FIGHT to use Revoscan 4 on the PC, all the same issues what you're mentioning: tracking, the klunky workflow, the VERY slow point clould fusing.
    My android phone using the beta version of Revoscan5 spanks the much more powerful laptop using 4.3. This includes fusing and meshing on the phone versus on the laptop with the old version.
    My issue now is there is a 2000-frame capture limit on the Android version, that I'm quickly reaching with larger, complex sheet metal stampings I've been trying to capture here. Otherwise, if this were "uncapped" I could literally work faster from my phone using beta 5, than version 4.3.
    I'm not saying re-do a review per se, because the software is definitely Beta quirky yet, and another public beta is due out at the end of the month. But, it'd be worthwhile testing with the beta software, from one Mini owner to another.

      Appreciate the heads up. I'll definitely check it out and do some more testing. I wish the software worked much better since the scanner has so much potential but maybe now after hearing this it can help.

    Thanks for posting this. Your use case is really close to what I was planning to do with a 3D scanner, and I almost pulled the trigger on the mini given the reviews I had seen.

      Does the disbelief come from these things being useless for useful things?
      I landed here because I've finally unpacked mine (yeah, it's been in a cupboard for a couple of years) to scan slot car stuff. Which it has utterly failed at.
      Not even going to bother trying to use it to scan real car parts, which is what I got it for.

    The mini is for small parts. 1-5cm but you can scan bigger parts as well. Try and surround the part you want to scan with debris.
    If possible put some stuff on top of the part you want to scan as well. Use feature mode.
    You have more work to clean the data but the scan will not lose tracking.
    It’s in German but it shows how you can use other parts to improve the tracking.

    I backed the mini and was super dissapointed. Everything youre saying in the video is absolutely correct in my opinion. The hardware is good, the software is the weak point. While i understand some of their challeneges theyre too focused on pumping out another scanner every couple months because thats where they make their money and while theyre making the software better, they need to focus a LOT more on the software.
    Im working on a video comparing the einstar to revopoint, the einstar is substantially better and does an amazing job of tracking compared to the revopoint stuff. Takes a better computer, but if you're working with 3d model you have to have a pretty beefy computer anyhow.

      I literally bought the Einstar just last week and I've already scanned everything the mini couldn't. The amount of time it has saved me compared to the mini is so worth it. There's certain parts or locations on a part where the mini could have actually been useful but in all honesty having both in your toolbox is the ultimate set up as long as the mini is able to keep track.

    Just picked up a mini a week ago or so for some reverse engineering prints (flight sim controls) and without a spray it's basically dead in the water, so nice to see you used foot power spray. I bought that 3d scanner print spray about about $42 a can, which is pricey but it works. It's got it's pluses but completely agree the software is absolute utter trash. I did however, back their new "range" model for my larger needed scans in the future, so hopefully that'll fair better with breaking tracking, like in your video. cheers - phrozen

    • @jushustudios
      @jushustudios  Рік тому +1

      Hope that spray works for all your needs. I cheaped out lol and didn't want to spend much when the software was still possibly going to have problems. After buying this product I personally wouldn't back another kickstarter from them. Their new range scanner does sound very nice but if they can't improve the software on their previous scanners it makes me weary about any future purchases from them. I'm currently looking at the shinning einstar which for just a bit more than the mini seems like it's everything the mini wanted to be.

      @@jushustudios have you actually tried the Mini for its intended use of scanning small objects? It seems like you're expecting it to do something it isn't designed for, making no real effort to help it overcome this (except the most basic measure of spraying the part) and then blaming the software when it loses track. Perhaps you don't understand the measures which need to be taken to assist these types of scanners but there are plenty of videos on UA-cam showing people getting excellent results with the same products and sofware.
      Check out Pop Up The Volume and Jon Himself on UA-cam if you want to see the results which are possible once you understand how to use these things.

      @@JoeyMcNew-Drummer keep tabs on the beta version of RevoScan that they're releasing public betas every month now (April 2023, at this writing). I've only a Mini, and the beta softare works with the Pop, Pop2, Mini, the dual-axis turntable that came out with the Mini, and the new Range.
      With this beta, I'm having issues with the PC version, but the Android version works FAR better than the 4.x version on my PC, like the version that @Jushustudios was using in this review.
      But it's quite clear that Revopoint is pushing to make their software better, and once the beta versions shake the bugs out, it'll be orders of magnitude better.

    Hey, what I do is, I surround the object with Playdoh balls to use them as references, in case you don't want to use markers, put them half inch away from the part and then try again, I guarantee you will not loose tracking at all.

  • @justinkase1360

    You can pause the scan, if you think it will lose track. It seems computer specs also matter and there are tricks one has to learn. I don't want to use a ton of markers, but MAYBE they would have helped? IDK, mine is on the way and I have a different use case. It doesn't seem best for medium size parts. Have there been updates since this?

    • @jushustudios
      @jushustudios  8 місяців тому

      Markers probably would have helped but I didn't think it would need them that bad. Since this video I actually sold the scanner because the software was so bad. I bought the einstar scanner instead and that blows the mini out the water as long as it's no smaller than a phone. Hopefully it works out for you and I heard there's been updates that helped but idk how well those updates were.

    For this particular example you didn’t need a 3D scanner. A Photo of your dash imported and scaled to size in fusion will do the trick. You can then sketch over the photo.

  • @diannafiredal
    @diannafiredal Рік тому +3

    You're using the wrong tool for the job as the mini isn't designed for this use case, as others have mentioned. The hint is the very small field of view, designed for scanning very small items with a high level of detail. Viewing objects like your trim piece through that small window, there aren't enough features for tracking to be maintained when holes or other prominent geometry leave the frame.
    Try using markers, scrunched up paper as a backdrop (where the scrunching forms geometry which helps maintain tracking), or scatter other objects around the part which can form useful geometry for tracking maintenance.

      I actually did my cars taillight cavity before making this video. I used scanning spray. Markers placed on the car, scrunched up pieces of scotch tape on the car, and tolled up small pieces of tape in the cavity. I used the different scan modes and different settings. In their kickstarter video for the mini they show themselves scanning a motorcycles gas tank which is way bigger than my car’s tailight cavity. Regardless of speed and modes while scanning, I was never able to get a scan done without having the issues that came up in this video. I was able to get a scan although it wasn’t perfect it was usable, I still had to go through the exact same problems experienced in this videi

    I am also so extremely disappointed with this scanner. Also, the accuracy of 0.02mm would be a dream. Unfortunately, I have even up to 1.5mm deviations. This scanner offers nothing more than what cheap apps & a smartphone can do. Now sitting there 1000€ spent on electronic junk, saved for 8 months and it just doesn't give any results and the results it does give are useless. I have never made such a bad purchase in my life as I did with this thing. Unfortunately, I have no choice but to throw it in the garbage can. Throwing 1000€ just in the trash can really hurts a lot.

    This is what my user experience was with this scanner, trying to use it for a real world application. It is pretty unusable for the most part. A waste of money unless you want to scan small trinkets. I agree. I think a lot of the problem is the software as well.

      No doubt it would be great for action figures and small objects like that as long as it can keep track. I just wish the software overall was better cause it is a really good scanner for the price when it works. The kickstarter video had shown them using it to scan a motorcycle tank and a couple of other automotive parts so I thought it was fair to apply that to my needs as well. You are scanning in feature mode a object that needs markers for tracking and has to be scanned in marker mode 👍
    Feature mode is used to scan intricate stuff, statues, highly detailed objects, human faces, etc.
    If you are reviewing something, at least learn how to use the hardware and software.

      The scanner is simply garbage. It doesn't matter in which mode you try to scan. It does not scan correctly and has an incredibly high deviation. I wanted to scan a broken door handle and clips for my car. Even the small clips this scanner couldn´t scan. And the offset that the scanner has in the door handle is incredibly bad. I need highly accurate results. Simply scanning figures for appearance is neither productive nor useful. If these figures had to be pressed in somewhere, you would notice how inaccurate the scanner is. 😅

    • @Kommentiert_
      @Kommentiert_ 11 місяців тому

      @@Ice3Dprints The problem is that you can't really operate the scanner incorrectly. It turns on, you press the buttons in the software and have to wait until the turntable has finished its rounds. But the scanner doesn't get that far, because at about 200° rotation it simply loses its orientation, no matter how light or dark the object is. If you then have to rotate the object because you really want to scan the top and bottom, the scanner is completely lost because it cannot attach the bottom to the top. If you have an object with a uniform surface, it might work, but in a world where a car part can be made of steel, plastic and aluminum at the same time, this scanner is just useless. And that's about the only thing that matters about reverse engineering. If I just want to have a 3D model that looks similar to an object, then of course it's enough, but you can also do that quickly by hand. However, if I want to reproduce a suitable component with the highest accuracy, then it's simply not suitable for that. And I'm really disappointed that you spend 1000€ for it and can throw it straight into the garbage can.
