I already know about granular synthesis but I wanted to learn more. The way you explained the concept by counting is really amazing. This makes it easier for beginners to understand easily. Thanks for the tutorial Bill.
All of the Glitch Machines stuff is so good, I'm so happy you threw that in there. Definitely do a whole video on FM and PM synthesis, it would greatly appreciated to see it from your perspective . Thanks Bill #hardcore
Yeah. Glitchmachines stuff is so great. They are doing upgrades right now with resizable GUI. Process is very slow but the waiting is so rewarding. Makes their tools awesome. For granular crusher-x too is extremely deep. Cheers
It would be nice if you did another tutorial and focused more on making a granulizer sound good. I've been messing with them a bit, and it's rare for me to make a patch that sounds as good as the granulized sounds in your tunes usually do
Genius, I was walking home listening to Jon Hopkins new album and wondering how to achieve different sounding ambient textures and I think around 9.20+ is after nailing it for me.... So happy thank you.
Loving these videos! Quick Palindrome tip: you can drag and drop samples into the waveform display or load from any file, not just the factory sounds file. Keep up the great work!
one of the coolest things with granular synthesis is that you cannot produce some granular sounds using traditional synthesis propellerhead has a very cool video with an easy to understand explanation of what grains are etc. granular is the future :D
you are the best. thank you for the free mr bill season 2 pack. I cant remember why i got it for free, i think i found a bug or something on the site but i could be wrong, but still, thank you for your music, your tutorials, your influence on a lot of producers ranging from twisted reggae to pop to psytrance and ofc glitch
Granular synthesis as a definition is not sampling based. Basic granular synthesis uses sine waves. It can use samples as it's input, instead of sine waves. They also don't need to be offset randomly. Granular synthesis is just sound particles. Micro sounds which when played back together sound as one. The way granular synthesis is typically used is 99% of the time, just the "cloud" form of it. But there's so much unexplored territory within it.
Probably a stupid question, but does this all apply to Logic as well? Like the free Ableton plug ins etc. Never used Ableton, but am really interested in making EDM
Nice. CrusherX (for Mac) is a highly comprehensive granulator too. And check out the work of Curtis Roads, a founding master who composes music/sound purely with granular synthesis.
Nice work man. Another great one. Can you please tell us how are you recording audio and the screen of your pc at the same time? Are you using voicemeter or something similar? I cannot figure out how to do it. I'll be forever grateful for this if you could answer back.
Awesome tutorial! You are always dropping gems. So just to clarify regarding the playback speed for pad sounds you were talking about earlier, it depends on the spray speed? I know samples play slower in lower octaves so that's in play as well but I wanted to clarify is that what Wikipedia meant by the playback speed. Also, my biggest issue with granular synthesis is I have put different sounds trying to make innovative leads or pads that are melodic in tone, and they all end up sounding like this cloud sound you were talking about earlier. Is that normal because I'm trying to get new sounds out of them. They end up sounding like the same cloud sound even though they are different samples. Other than that, granular for understanding what it is doing to the audio is fine, but I just don't get why with different samples, I can't get different tones for making new lead or pad sounds. Once again I end up with that cloud sound in the end result so any tips from your constant use of granular to fix this issue would be helpful
Random Person I think alchemy can do most if not all of what granulator can. I remember I used to have a copy of this synth back when it was still made by camel audio and it allowed u to use granular synthesis.
what is that thing attached to his nose, is it something to curb a chronic nose picking habit or is he borneo-again-headhunter ,( bye the bye this is not hate? ). like the talk on the granulating of sound, very interesting . and he, like true gent saves the best bit for last, cracked me up no end. a great piece of dry humour.
"Every single person on the planet knows what counting sounds like." I think you're forgetting drummers Bill. We only know how to count to 4 and repeat! :P
I'll never get tired of your intro.
he should make an indie game soundtrack
There's a stream of him making it on his website.
@@nervousneighbour I saw him making it live ^^
This mans posture is so good I thought he was standing

Great posture
Yo for real.
Great chair
I sat up straight when I read this comment
10/10 for the clickbait thumbnail
Better than most UA-cam clickbait - the thumbnail was actually in the video!

thumbs up for animal crossing at 8:59
I was looking for this xD
GREAT tutorial my dude
This is such a great tutorial thanks - using the numbers as a reference v clever made it much easier to understand what was happening

ooooo palidrone looks amazing! I've been using granulator II for years now. One of my favorite plugins of all time.
If one could drink sounds through a straw, granular would be the type of synthesis needed to reproduce what that might sound like.
this is exactly the Sound i was Looking for. thanks for sharing man.

Not only that, you can make a folder filled with sounds and then randomize them from that folder without changing the articulations.
@@benjiusofficial interesting
Thank you Mr. Bill.
That is all.
Granulator II is a real gem

happy to see the studio got such a huge boost!
Ahh yes, the ultimate Flume tutorial
@9:00 my cat woke up like 'holy crap what's that sound?' haha
that big schnoz ring, love it. Also amazing tutorial!

Thumbnail at 5:25. You're welcome.
Thanks a bunch for doing a video on this !!! Love love love granular
Thank you! I’ve been looking for how these types of effects are achieved, I just didn’t know exactly what to call it. 🙏🙏
And I was experimenting with granular synthesis last night, perfect!
Lol you better sample that 'sex' at 5:24
Youre my favourite Australian
I like the synth Jawas at 8:58.
The Mangler is also a really cool one. Has anyone messed with Iota II?
thank you I enjoy that a lot
This helped me a lot, thank you Mr. Bill 😁
You know he's been in it for a while when you see SmartElectronix plugs come up
Exoscope is the classic! If I had to pick one "been in it for a while" VST that never get's old, it would have to be CamelPhat 3.
3:33 is just wild sounding, kinda like movie sound effects when someone is loopy
Great tutorial and really funny too, thanks!

oh cool... Hi shroom
This is kind of what Polyverse's I Wish plugin does too, right?
9:18 Below Filter B in Granulator, the Frequency shows 666Hz. Mr.Bill is Illuminati confirmed

Yessss. Earned a sub here.

Nice analyzer
Thought it is only available in 32bit?
SEX hahahahhaahahha I laughed way too hard there
Sandman is likely a grain synthesis just based off the name. Like a grain of sand.
I "have" ableton 10.1.6 suit and it dont have granulator II, anyone know why?
good stuff man
Oh Cool! I was wondering how to be Oneohtrix Point Never and now i know!

How did I get from a beat saber video to this in 2 videos?

what did he do at 9:35 to transform the sound from the low drone to the pad
did u ever figure it out lol
He transposed the sample one octave higher
ok, but why do you use granulator over simpler ?
ableton‘s sampler is also great for granular synthesis
Mr. Bill been in the gym
He's going to need a new avatar, something buff.
thanks
Can I do this with Iris 2?
Don't think so
Does anyone have any other recommendations for Granular synths besides the Granulator and Palindrome? :)
What headphones are you using Mr. Bill?
I'm trying to use the granular synth to make risers, do you know how I can automate the fine tune by any chance? It has a limit of 51 only...
use the frequency shifter audio effect
thank u
