  • This video shows how the #Sustainable Produce Containers can be used for packaging live microgreens. The reversible clay-coated white side with high wet strength helps keep the roots moist for up to a week in the refrigerator and the brown Kraft side can be stamped on the outside saving on labels.
It does take a little time to fold them but not near as long as it takes for a plastic container to #biodegrade since almost all recycling centers have to throw them away (there is no market for used thermoformed plastics).
Plus by shipping the Sustainable Produce Containers flat you save on space and shipping costs and allows us to compete with plastic on pricing. And when the customer is ready to harvest any of the #microgreens they can just open the Kliklok front wall and make their cuts.

Great video and idea! I wondered how long your greens last in the refrigerator when in this container. I worried about them drying out and wilting in the fridge. Thanks and will be contacting you about the sample pack!

It would be a little like putting your live tray of microgreens in the refrigerator. You'd need to water but not as much since the growing process is being paused. I recommend to my customers to cut them and put in a tupperware type container as soon as get home or leave on counter and consume within a couple days. The box is merely a nonplastic conduit to get them from me to the customer and they're best fresh anyway.

I grow in 5X5 trays - do you think they would fit in one of these boxes? Do you cut yours down to size? Will also go to your IG in case you don't get this over here.

Thanks! And if you want to cut up your 5x5 pads then you can make them fit. You can see more here on this microgreens page of my website where you can also order a $10 sample kit (the cost covers shipping) to decide which box would be best for your situation: sustainableproducecontainer.com/microgreen-growers/

Love this. Do you have any sustainable packaging options for fresh-cut microgreens as well?

Do you sell to grocery stores? If not we probably can’t help you at this point with the boxes but we do have growers who use biodegradable bags and then place those into the boxes so they don’t get crushed in their CSAs, Also some growers sell them cut in the boxes at farmers markets and their customers know they need to take them home and eat them immediately or put them in their own airtight container We are also working on an affordable plant-based insert That could be sealed. Here’s one of the customers who bags then boxes … instagram.com/amplegreens?

What medium do you use for growing microgreens?

I tried all of the ones available from coco coir pads, jute, paper towels, hemp, soil...I finally settled on a roll of burlap from home depot. I cut them to fit 6 in a 10x20 tray and use 2 layers for the smaller seeds. See last image on this page for how 6 can fit: sunsugarfarms.com/microgreen-growers/

I've used these for arugula and kale but every grower is different, I'd recommend getting a sample pack of the different sizes to see what works best for you! www.cresbicrate.com/special-pricing/sustainable-clamshell/single-sample

That's a challenge. You would have to refer to a bag in that case to seal the air out.
