- REEL STREETS OF MELBOURNE - EPISODE 8
In 2017 the house in the film "The Castle" was sold and transported to Beechworth, Victoria. I explore the locations of this film leading me to the inner suburbs of Melbourne, Strathmore (not Strathearn as I incorrectly call it), This is actually my attempt at a joke.
Sometimes when you're in a suburb your phone will tell you you're in a different suburb due to your phone reaching another tower. That's the joke I'm making... never mind.
Bonnie Doon, Canberra and hopefully Beechworth to find where the Kerrigan house was moved to.
"The Castle" was released in 1997 and has become the most quotable Australian film ever made.
The film is owned by Working Dog Productions

My information came from the Herald-Sun article by Samantha Landy and photos by Tony Gough

Well for what it’s worth, my dad (92 now ) is confident that this house is one a couple he built in that street.. he was a Chippy and built many houses in that area . We talked about it and google mapped it and he reckons it was one of his.
Not that it’s a claim to fame. He also built the giveaway house for the first home show in Melbourne, right underneath the dome in the old exhibition building. That I do have photos of.
Tell ya dad ... He's dreamin'
I love this movie!!!, Even though I am Scottish The Castle always brings a smile to my face, It has great one liners such as "How's the serenity", "Tell him he's dreaming", "This is going straight in the pool room" and Dennis Denuto swearing at his photocopier.
Any films close to this from where you are?
@@garystinten9339 I used to go the pub where they filmed the scene in Trainspotting where Begbie nonchalantly threw a beer glass off a balcony "That lassie got glassed and no cunt is leaving until we find out what cunt did it"
There's a TV series called "still game". That's a Scottish classic that's the exact same artery as the castle and it is deathly funny.
There must be hundreds of people who have actually died laughing at that show.
My son and I quote from this movie constantly, lo these many years. It's become a running gag that if any of my friends or family want to watch a movie, I beg them to watch it with me (while I say all the lines with the characters). It's the vibe.
Isn't it "Hours of serenity" ? Whatever. No matter how it's worded, a calm and peaceful mood ensues when shouted above a roaring outboard motor.
seriously brilliant film and an icon in our family. Actually with all the fires last yr our house burnt down. In the following weeks we got hold of this movie and sat down to laugh together. Better than just curling up in a ball and crying. Ripper Paul. Thank you
Paul, this video is going straight to the pool room. I’m not even taking it out of the wrapper, it’s a collectors item.
That was an incredibly faithful reproduction of the punching bag scene with Eric Bana. :D
Hold it still, Trace.
I feel privileged , I carved the wooden statue you hugged,, nice vid.
Really?
YOU LITTLE RIPPER!!!
Thank you, this is a great tribute to a fabulous film.
Come to think of it, transmission towers like the ones Darryl is admiring would be pretty dangerous to have right next to an airport.
The power lines were at Bonnie Doon.
@@marcusm8745 in reality yes but i was referring to their apparent placement as shown in the film being close to the house and therefore the airport.
@@spamviking No I think in the movie too. They were at Bonnie Doon when Daryl was admiring them.
@@marcusm8745 i think its both, only one thing for it then, gotta rewatch the film
@@spamviking They were def at both. It was one of the jokes in the movie. Home was cheap near the powerlines, holiday home also cheap...near the powerlines.
My drama teacher was the opposing barrister for the airport, his real name is John Benton.
Thanks for a well put together video on an Australian classic movie. This is going straight to the pool room 👍🍻
thank you for making this video, should be on national TV
Very cool video.. I love the castle and really enjoyed this .thank you ....
Thanks again for making these video,s.
Great to go back and see the older parts of Melbourne.
I’d love it if you did a video on filming locations from The Late Show!
Cheers Paul!
We named our dog Bonnie Doon.
You make a great little doco!
I would have loved to see the "then and now" shots side by side on the screen. I had to keep stopping and going back and forth 5 seconds to compare the two shots.
T W I’ve done that in previous videos but thought it’s hard to look at both shots together. Maybe I’m wrong but anyway, at least you can jump back and forth. My next one will be just as annoying I think.
Poor editing in the beginning but otherwise almost as funny as the film which in my view stands with My Brilliant Career, Animal Kingdom and Lantana as one of the best Australian films ever made. You are a total dag and I bloody love it!

Watched it a couple of weeks ago (for the umteinth time) on UA-cam. Absolutely a ripper...
Top work Paul. Thank you
Great video well done! Could you do a video/doco on locations of Muriels wedding?
While I'm not as talented as Paul here I can tell you that Porpoise Spit (obviously not a real place) is on the Gold Coast somewhere and all the rest was essentially filmed in and around the Sydney CBD
Very well made, thought out and funny !
You have got me hooked on your vids ... let’s get you more subs
Darryl: now, from here back, all landfill, not allowed to build there..
council guy: has the soil been tested?
Darryl: oh yeah, nothin too serious in there... ..what do you know about lead?
When I was at TAFE doing a legal course for joining the police department, one of our homework assignments was to watch The Castle, because it gave an excellent representation of the Australian court system structure.
Did it?
This was Awesome 👍
Great doco. One more: the fleeting glimpse of Dennis's new office, 'As seen on TV' at 1:17 is 262 Queen Street
Thank you. I was looking for that.
Deniis DeNuto As Seen On TV
Tell him he's dreaming
Jousting Sticks
I don't know what the opposite of letting someone down is but you've down the opposite
It's just the vibe of the thing
Shall I go on ?? Could have added at least another 20 lines from memory and I haven't watched the film in 3 or 4 years !! Classic.
Did you pick up the jousting sticks and trading post signs in the window at Bonnie Doon..?
@@goodtrollofthewest2757 We're goin to Bonnie Doon. We're goin to Bonnie Doon. We're goin to Bonnie Doon. We're goin to Bonnie Doon. We're goin to Bonnie Doon. We're goin to Bonnie Doon.
Whadya call that love? Chicken Darl..why would you eat out when you can get this at home. My husband said that many many times..lol. bloody great movie!
Good Job
THANK YOU FOR SHARE THIS AUSTRALIA HISTORY AS GREAT OLD AUSTRALIA MOVIE
I remember my mum took me to see the castle but she was shocked to hear the f bomb couple of times here but I absolutely loved that movie I was 12 years old when my mum took me to see the castle
The cliche thing of Historical buildings being redeveloped into Apartments has gotten weird. I remember when Pentridge was being redeveloped into Residential area with the walls still intact, i still find it weird when driving past it. People now Choose and pay deeply to live there.
Be a few ghosts in and around the old Pentridge. When it was open as a jail we would drive past and Dad would say that’s where the bad men live! I was terrified of it as a youngster.
Terrific video!
Thanks so much for putting up this video. I've always been a huge fan of the castle and to this day it is still one on my most favourite movies. It's a shame to see the Kerrigan house gone but pleased that it hasn't been destroyed. I reckon I'm going to have to make a pilgrimage to Bonnie Doon one day, that has now made my bucket list. Thanks for the upload, it was very enjoyable.
you can really tell the difference at how professionals film a location, and how you film a location.
You chose this video to say that!!!! Not the Ghost Rider or Mr. Nice Guy one? All righty then 🤷♂️
Enjoying your videos 👍
Love this documentary.great name.me too.Paul.
Strathern? is not a suburb AFAIK, might have be a ward or sub-ward of Essendon or Stathmore, unless you are mispronouncing Stathmore in which is situated Dagonet St.
Saul Fischauer Dagonet St is in Strathmore VIC 3041
I went to bonnydoon and i visited this house
lol an actual airport is there. Did they write that before finding the location or write it in after they found the location?
Can you do an episode like this on The Big Steal 1990 Australian classic!!
I did it already. It’s in my channel and also on The Big Steal blu ray which includes Joanna’s house.
So Melbourne to develop a prison into apartments.
People are already living in there!
This was an old prison depicted in another Australian classic.. CHOPPER
great videos
The house had a cruel irony and not only remembered that Greed in Australia is alive and well, but also that Australia needs to take better care about their own history.....
Did you also forgot Dennis new office and the gate steal in Toorak?
Typical in Australia. If a building has historical significance; it will be sold to developers and torn down for apartments.
Filmed in 2 weeks... Crazy
Where are the gates?
I sold them in the trading post. I asked for $100. They said I was dreamin’.
Looking down from Google Earth... Darryl Kerrigen's spirit is being kept alive well in Dagonet St by the bloke 3 doors down. That movie is may late Dad's favourite movie of all time and he knew all of the lines... What do ya know about lead?
Back when comedy was still allowed to be funny.
The statue is hilarious
What about the gate?
Gave up on this when he said the power lines were near the airport.
just wondering did u find out where the wrought iron steel gates went . which where towed away in the movie
Yeah, they're in my front yard. Maybe I better move them around the back.
@@PaulHagl 😂
American salute at the end and with the wrong hand. LOL How's the hilarity ?? ; )
Kristin Burton I’m playing a nerdy fool. Comes quite easy to me.
Actually, the Queen's personal bodyguard and coach footman salute with the left hand as to remain armed and at the ready, all other troops salute with the right. :)
How about the serenity of the new location of the Kerrigan house !!!!
Great work mate.
Straight to the pool room!
Eric Bana is from Mansfield. His parents used to own the pub.Not sure if they still do.
Great movie, the castle that is. Your is well yer its ok to......
I think you forgot where they got a bargain on a nice gate down in Toorak... ;)
They took the tree ? Serenity ? Not with the planes ?
Parents and i knew coburg and saw pentridge turn into housing . Strange.worked and shopped in brunswick.you brought back many memories.
840 i hope you had permission and not just walked onto the house .lol.
That's a shame how they actually demolished the house what a shame
?
@@miboogaroo what's it mean
@@addamsmith where did they demolish the house? What video were u watching?
Good question this video at 12:16 and the house is 3 dagonet st strathmore Victoria Melbourne
@@addamsmith still dont get u? They didnt demolish... They moved the house to beechworth where they are in the process of doing it up. If u google it's got a new roof etc...
Bonny Doon?
You should do paperback hero!
Can you do Rom pa Stomper
It was filmed near where i live
#BloodyBrilliant 🍺
The suburb is Strathmore not Essendon Fields
Sean Leckey it was a google maps joke that I delivered very badly. I didn’t forgot the other locations you mentioned because I don’t know where they are.
@@PaulHagl no worries mate. Good video thought
@@PaulHagl G'day mate. I have more good news about the 2 locations that you could'nt find.
@@PaulHagl Hi. I have been waiting for your reply on this comment section.
@@Schultzy1992 hello what?
1:24 dagonet street strathmore
At least leave the bloody tree!😡
So much for white Australian sacred sites!
I would rather have seen it replaced by an airport runway than more dogboxes
Hahahaha Brilliant
Strathmore not strathearn.
Could you please do a where was it filmed for Fatty Finn?
I'll look into it
@@PaulHagl would you also consider some locations from the movie "The Nugget" ?

Thank you. The Castle is one of the reasons why I went back to university in my 40's and studied law - constitutional law.
Goodness me. An acorn into a tree. Or in this case, a hole into a patio.
My husband played as an extra in the original movie! This is now a classic in our home! Thank you for sharing ❤️
Christina Bustamante which part? Time?
Australian comedy used to be something really good. Now it's like everyone is trying to emulate trash comedians like Silverman and Schumer.
Television now is about Advertising ??
But i guess it always has been.
But even the the Television shows have there own Advertising built in.
If you don,t like House Reno,s Cooking Shows, or Talent Shows.
You won,t find much else to watch now except for the Ads which run as long as the shows your watching.
Thankfully i can watch UA-cam and still watch ads but only for the 5 seconds it takes for the Skip This Ad becomes available to click on, LOL.
@@weldmachine Aye. Norm MacDonald on UA-cam is all you need.
@Jamie
Tha saturation of Advertising on UA-cam now.????
UA-cam has even stopped in a lot of cases the option to skip an Ad ????
Now we have to wait 15 seconds for the Ad to finish????
Best just to Mute the Advertising then back to watching what we have come to watch.
Either that or just stop watching so much UA-cam i guess.
Good on ya Paul! A terrific video that made me laugh and wanna pull out the Castle DVD and give it another watch!!
Dion J Thanks very much
I went to Bonnie Doon on 2003 after watching the film a few months earlier. That lake was completely dry & I walked right under that bridge.
That was during the millennium drought so not surprised. I was a delivery driver for 18 months (melbourne) in '07-'08 and it slightly rained on maybe 3 occasions that i could remember. Frightening when it doesn't rain for so long.
@@RPI79 crazy mate. Qatar is the same. Haven't seen decent rain for over 12mths here!
Hey mate thanks for the upload fantastic movie...it's a shame how Australia has changed so much in ways...I really enjoy your videos and the effort you go to... you deserve alot more subscribers 😀
You're so right!
Great Aussie comedy before political correctness and cultural super-sensitivity eroded much of Australiana. :(
It should be classified as a national treasure and protected under government law, the movie was a symbol of Australia and many in NZ also loved it, it represented so much of who we were as a people. Now that way of life is gone for ever.
One would think the rebuild/reassymble of the house in Beechworth would be done by now, time for a update me think, lots of views on this brilliant video you did!
Max Max, Muriel's wedding, Priscilla queen off the desert and of course this masterpiece are amazing Aussie classic's that i remember watching in my hectic youth quoting all those iconic phrases!!! Good times...!
You just named off all of my favourite Australian movies! And actually, several of my top most beloved films ever. Love, from Canada. Now If I could just find the TV series of Utopia to re-watch, I'd be in Dreamland.
@@tonirose6776 Gday from Australia and hope you have a great night!
Thanks Paul,
That was really enjoyable.
I reckon bring back those 90’s comedy skits. Especially the ones taking the piss out of the Current Affairs shows. Absolutely loved the Castle film and as funny as it is, it’s not to far from the truth of real Australia. Working families, migrants, draconian laws, a fair go and families growing together in busy communities.
Thanks to you and you mate for taking the time to visit all these locations.
Great work, did you find that gates stolen from the "house in Toorak? "
They’re in my front yard! I better move them round the back 🤭
@@PaulHagl I was going to reply with something funny, but I was afraid they you'd take a'fence.
@7:20 There was a water depth marker stick at that spot at Lake Eildon in Bonnie Doon, it was a little higher up the slope of the hill to where you were standing and next to the boat launching ramp
This video shows how depressing money-driven property market has become, Australia has plenty of space, yet we still want to subdivide and make new apartment's
I moved to the country for the serenity, now I have neighbors with 20 barking greyhounds.
(yeah I know, someone is going to reply "suffer in yer jocks")
In these very strange times of global pandemic...it has been lovely to watch this again and laugh and reminisce. Just as funny. Thanks!
That was absolutely brilliant mate ,I'm an Englishman obsessed with The Castle ,I watch it at least once a year, thanks for this .
