- Can non-newtonian fluids mix when you shake them? In this video I put two different colors of oobleck in a paint shaker and see if they will mix. First I show you a normal newtonian fluid like syrup mixing. Then I show you what happens when you try to mix oobleck. I was surprised by the results.

That's exactly what I thought.
The way the oobleck moves reminds me of me trying to run fast in a dream.
The syrup took longer because you filled it to the brim. With ubleck you left a good amount if empty space allowing it somewhere to go and there for making it easier to mix.

Though adding to the corn starch could be more efficient if you need a specific amount of oobleck since the food colouring would dye the starch then you add water untill desired viscosity has been reached rather than using it in water potentially having too much

Its not about the two different colored oobleks mixing together its the fact that when you quickly move ooblek it hardens and he (along with others) thought that because the paint shaker was moving so quick that the ooblek wouldn't move and remain solid. The colors are just for easier distinction.
It’s nothing about the colors he put it in different colors because then you would not tell if it mixed or not. If you put in the same color you won’t know which is which and if it mixed it not.

This made me think that the mixer broke loose any excess liquid, and that free moving liquid is what we actually saw mixing. It remained out of solution until he poured it off the top.

No it doesn't. I've made oobleck before and it is supposed to be like that
he was testing how it mixes when its supposed to be in its solid state, so a thick mixture with high shear rate means it takes a lot less force to be solid which is what you want in this particular case

If you want a collor in you oobleck just put the colloring in the water first before you put the corn sirup in. Maybe it works..

They are after all the same substance...he is interested in trying to mix non Newtonian fluids because they behave like solids under some circumstances and liquids under other circumstances, and obviously solids do not mix.

Ooblek is hard when a lot of pressure hits/touches it. It isn't the speed that matters as much. Also if you want to mix color in Ooblek, mix it in the water. Not the end mixture

As a tip, mix your dyes into the water before adding the corn starch, it'll eliminate your color mixing issue

Dear @The Action Lab , I was watching a youtube shorts video of yours featuring this video, and the subject of vibrations and non-Newtonian fluids intrigued me. I was hoping you could perform an experiment I do not have the materials to do. The experiment goes as follows:
Materials:
A machine used to rapidly vibrate a rigid plate along various axes, preferably with adjustable amplitude and frequency
a rigid, planar plate at an incline used to gauge the rate of movement of a fluid down the incline at various frequencies, amplitudes, and axes of vibration
At least three fluids, one exhibiting Newtonian properties as a liquid (e.g. water), one exhibiting shear-thinning (e.g., ketchup, grease), and one exhibiting shear-thickening (e.g., oobleck)
A setup such that the vibration of the plate can be adjusted to various directions (i.e., co-planar-horizontal, co-planar-diagonal, co-planar-"vertical," perpendicular, horizontal, vertical, etc.)
Camera for recording
Possible independent variables: axis of vibration, angle of vibration relative to incline angle, frequency of vibration, amplitude of vibration, fluid on the plate, volume of fluid deposited onto the plate, whether the plate is vibrating when the liquid is deposited onto the plate
Possible dependent variables: rate of flow of fluid, rate of movement of fluid (in the case of the fluid rolling or sliding rather than flowing), presence of flow, threshold amplitude for the flow to be halted, manner of movement (i.e., sliding, rolling, bouncing, flowing, etc.)
I am extremely interested in the results of this experiment, although I do not have means to perform it. I encourage you to adapt the procedure and/or material, variables, etc. as it may suit you. My guess on why it mixed is that it actually got solid, but the vibration eroded it into a fine powder which mixed easily.

An easy way to make ooblek a color is to use the food coloring in the water before adding it. I didn't think anybody would try it after already mixing the two. I just figured people would know it would be to hard. I see a lot of comments talking about how he said red and not pink. It could have been red and the cameras just funky, just said it wrong without thinking or he's color blind. And I also see comments about the ooblek itself. That is perfect ooblek. If you properly measure everything it should be just like his. 50/50 water cornstarch.

Not with an axial paint mixer. There's virtual no movement at dead center. It's probably the variation in shear across the jar that permit the mixung. It would be interesting to see how it behaves in a vertical shaker.
