I felt so unwell, but seeing you had a video for us gave me the strength to make some tea and eat some blackberry crumble. Now my headache is fading!

Oh bother, headaches can really be a nasty thing - blackberry crumble with tea sounds like a wonderful meal when you're feeling unwell though 🥧🫖 I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you recover quickly and will be all back on track soon! 🤗

Thank you! I have a chronic illness that sounds like it came from a fairy tale (lupus, or "wolf" because of a characteristic rash that some think looks like the reddish facial markings on a grey wolf), so I am often ill, but I am luckier than many because my case is not too severe. Love and hugs from Boston!

Thank you once again 🤗. Will check out your suggestions… Poor Hares … I wonder how these beautiful animals became a symbol for the occult and evil . That cheesecake looked delicious 🤗 just like all those other njammies ❤

Thank you so much for your lovely comment my dear 🤗 I wish I could serve you a piece of cheesecake with a cup of tea and we could have
a nice chat about books 🫖📚
You're right, there are quite a lot of hares on the covers of the recommended book - I honestly hadn't noticed that until now 😅
I once read that their well-known symbolism for fertility can also be used in a darker context, and then stands for the uncontrollable, which is often present in creepy stories. I'll do some more research, now I'm curious 😉🐇

@@amomentofwonder I just had your channel suggested for me--which is perfect. I love Folk Horror, Dark Fairy Tales and Folkloric Fantasy novels. You suggested some great ones I've already read--The Nesting, Starve Acre and The Twisted Ones--all wonderful books. Which means I'll have to pick up the others soon!
As for hares--some of their association with occult forces has to do with their folkloric reputations as being either the familiars of witches, or they themselves are shapeshifted witches going abroad with nefarious intent at night. They also are associated with the moon, like rabbits, and their fierce and wild antics during mating season, with fights and chases and seeming dances gave rise to the saying, "mad as a march hare." They go from being fairly timid creatures to so wild that it seems that they must be possessed by wicked spirits when its time to mate.

@barbarafisher4915 Welcome to the channel 🤗 The UA-cam algorithm really worked perfectly when it showed you this episode of Brews & Books of all things. I'm always happy to meet fellow folk horror and dark fairy tale lovers (book recommendations are always very welcome! 😁📚).
Thanks for the info and clarification regarding the hares in dark folklore! I didn't know any of that, but love to learn about such things 😊👍

I am going to check out ‘The Witchwood Knot’. I am very interested in stories about governesses, as I was a nanny myself for many years. On a different note, I love your outfit in the video, and also the music! I want to get a vest like yours!

What a great treat on a Sunday! As usual I want to eat, drink, and read everything in this video. This specific niche is particularly up my alley, so I have added all of the books you mentioned to my TBR. I love how I haven’t heard of most of the books that you mention. And the covers of all of these are especially compelling. 😍

Thank you so much, that's so kind of you 🤗
Agreed! I love dark and chilling stories in general, but when they also have folklore elements/inspiration, I'm instantly sold 😁📚 I'm so glad to hear there were some unfamiliar books for you in this video and your TBR was able to grow. I hope you'll enjoy reading them as much as I did - and that they give you the creeps at times 😉🫖

Another wonderful video ! I adore dark folklore and folk horror. Damnable tales is so good. I've only read a portion of it. I occasionally grab it to read an occasional story. Winterset Hollow has been on my TBR for ages but I have not gotten to it yet. You referenced gruesome and gory scenes...are the any with animal violence? That is the one thing I can't stomach in a book. Starve Acre is a good one. My favorite book by Andrew Michael Hurely though, is The Loney. The covers on all the books you featured are stunning.

The Nesting seems like a good story (and is it weird that I really enjoy seeing certain book covers and that one is really pretty to me)?
And now I am hungry again too...Thanks. hehe

    • @amomentofwonder
      @amomentofwonder  13 годин тому

No, that's absolutely not weird, I really like the cover too 😁
And I personally love books with beautiful covers (the story has to be convincing too, of course, but I can't say no to a stunning cover) 😉📚
Thank you for your comment my dear 🤗

I've already seen your video with 2024 favorites (but unfortunately I haven't had time to comment yet) and have immediately noted a few books on my to-read list. "The Grace of Wild things" and "Half a Soul" were definitely favorites of mine too 😊👍 And if you loved her other books, you will definitely like "Witchwood Knot" by Olivia Atwater as well.
Oh, there's nothing better than birthday books 😁 I hope you'll enjoy "A Wolf for a spell", please let me know what you think when you finished it! 📚🐺
