It was written by Cobain but he was a sloppy drummer so Chad just cleaned it up , I mean Kurt shows Chad what he wanted and Chad did it and then grohl did it
@um me He was exactly what he needed to be for the band. A lot of his written lines may be simple, but he held down the body of the song and provided Kurt a stable backing with which he could create noise and chaos without the whole song devolving into a mess. Also his stage presence was full of energy and character which provides a lot of excitement to a live set
everything is nothing taylor is a lot more technical and more of a dynamic player. check out his band birds of satan, drumming on there has a lot more room to breathe
I think the, “playing the bass drum along the rif/bass line“ trick is the most important one. If you listen closley on the nirvana stuff you will find that alot of the times the drums reall follow the guitar rythem like that and than the bass follows the bassdrum. And this is what makes the band so tight.
"it looks like it's dancing" and "I know he doesn't use a China but it's there and I wanted to hit it" are the two most drummer things I've ever heard.
Thanks for doing a drum video. I'm a little busy right now so I might have to come back to it. I'm mostly a guitar player but my first instrument was the drum in fourth grade and it has influenced me sometimes more than I realize.
Thank you very much for the video. I am a big fan of Dave Grohl and this helped me A LOT to understand the musicality of his drumming technique. Once again, thank you so much.
I always loved Dave Grohl’s playing and his sense of humour, he’s such an awesome guy. Also, here are a few suggestions for some future Art of Drumming players - Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters - you did Dave so it’s only fair) - Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) - Ringo Starr (The Beatles) - Tré Cool (Green Day) - Keith Moon (The Who) - Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)
at 5:01, it's funny that you didn't even _have_ to play the fill. As soon as you said it was instantly recognizable, I already knew what song it was going to be! Dave's drumming is great.
Dave Grohl didn't actually make the In Bloom fill it was written by the drummer right before Dave. He says this in the Nirvana Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech
Are you using an A custom ride and K crashes? You should ditch the K crashes and go for the A custom 16 and 18 inch crash and then get the 14 inch A custom hats. Replace that steel snare with a 13 inch too. It will make that kit pop so much more and give you a lot more diversity in tuning and dynamic!
Bill Stevenson was a huge influence on Dave Grohls drumming as well. He actually paid homage to him with his intro to Song For The Dead (intro to Stick It In - Black Flag). Two of my favorite drummers!
The teen spirit beat he plays with what is almost swung eight notes. Like a lot of disco and funk players plus John Bonham. It makes the beat more spaced out and dynamic and actually sound slower than it is. Ringo played this way also, many students learn their beats playing it too straight and that is why so many end up being dissatisfied with the end comparison. Yes it doesn't sound the same and these people aren't gods, you're just playing it wrong and with a little more practice/listening of music that swings you will get it. Thankyou you are a good teacher!
In bloom Lithium Stay away Breed All Chad Channing. Dave learnt the songs when he joined nirvana as they’d already been played a lot live. There are hundreds of live bootlegs out there with chad playing these songs before anyone starts. Good video though and not your fault you didn’t know this. I’m just a nirvana nerd and feel the need to ensure Chad gets the credit he deserves ✌️
Being a begginer/intermediate guitar player I have seen lots of your videos.. Than I see this so I say "it can't hurt" and I got a guitar dynamics tip out of it! Lol... Thanks! New title for the channel "The art of Guitar?"
I really appreciated the video. Excellent way of explaining to young students the difference between getting it done and doing it properly. In regards to “no one knows” I was taught by my teacher that they were flam triplets and he took great pleasure in informing me that Grohl slowed down. I didn’t give a fuck, it’s rock for Christ’s sake.
Myself being a power drummer for 30 years and now trying to reinvent myself. Never thought Ghost Notes would be so difficult no, but I'll get it. Couldn't imagine where I'd be if I grew up with UA-cam. Free drum lessons? I would be so much better now. No wonder you see 13 year old girls online killing it.
You should check out his drumming on QOTSA and especially on the Them Crooked Vultures records. It's waaaay more advanced than anything he could do in Nirvana.
I have watched a fair amount of people cover teen spirit, thankfully you break it down properly enough having to cover 19 other songs. I really think you need to get the art of drumming on a 2nd channel and website :-) I like your teaching style.
Mike, I'm pretty sure I saw you at the Maple Grove guitar center today. Didn't even realize it was you til after the fact. Worst part is I walked out right away while you were talking to the employees about dancing on pedals haha. Didn't wanna walk up to say hey and be wrong

It was written by Cobain but he was a sloppy drummer so Chad just cleaned it up , I mean Kurt shows Chad what he wanted and Chad did it and then grohl did it

"To see him Grohl as a musician..." Haha, well played, Sir.
Would love to see a video like this but for Meg White, I know her stuff is pretty simple but it’s amazing how that simplicity is so powerful
Dave and Lars are the reason I started playing drums. They were drummers who sounded cool and weren’t impossible to emulate.
G Birdo bro, what about Samuelson?
With the Britney Spears headset swagger
It’s not the first time I’ve used that thing. I guess I could say, oops I did it again! 😂
Chad Channing wrote the In Bloom drum part. Yeah, I'll be "that guy".
First thing I thought when he said Dave wrote it
We know !! Who gives af it’s one song I’m so sick of hearing about chad Channing the guy sucked ass and was fired for a good reason
How about Chad Smiths drum techniques? :)
Can we please get Johnny Greenwood (radiohead) guitar techniques.
You all know what Dave Grohl's secret to his drumming is?
FRESH POOOOOOOOOTTTT!!!!!!!
Andrie Alinsangao No, I don’t have a coffee problem! You know what my problem is; THERES NOT A FRESH FUCKING POT!
Are you saying pot or poot?
Fresh toooooots.
@@abaum220 LOL, gotta love Dave Grohl!

I'm a big fan of Dave. Very good break down of his technique. Awesome video bro.👍
Great video. also his drumming on Them Crooked Vultures, Tenacious D and Probot are amazing too.
I've been listening to them crooked vultures again and it's blowing my m in d
Dude! No one ever know Probot. Fucking killer drum work on that album
His drumming for QOSTA was brilliant work as well, Dave should drum more in my humble opinion.
