Dominic Miller -Sting's long-time guitarist sits down for a very candid interview with DH & T's.

- He's been Sting's guitarist and right-hand man for more than 30 years and the Argentinian born Dominic Miller has also released a number of CDs of his own. Dominic sat down with me before a Sting concert in Bangor, Maine to talk about the impact of the pandemic, writing songs with Sting, drummers he has performed with some of his new music on a new label among other things in this latest episode of DrumHeads & Tales.

I toured for many years as the Front-of-House engineer for Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Dream Theater and many others. At the end of a tour of South America with Steve Vai, I was starting my trip home from Buenos Aires when I became engaged in conversation with an older, business-type gentleman in the bar of the departure terminal where we were both waiting for our flights. He asked me what I had been doing in Buenos Aires, and I was surprised that he seemed very familiar with the name of the guitarist I told him I was there working with. He asked me which other guitarists I liked, and I told him that one of my all-time favorites was Dominic Miller 'who plays with Sting'. A smile slowly unfolded on this gentleman's face, and he quietly said 'that's my son'. He gave me his business card (I still have it), and I'll always have one of life's lovely chance encounters to remember. He was immensely proud of Dominic, as well he should have been. Should you happen to see this, Dominic, my condolences, and it was a pleasure to share some unexpected but very warm time with your dad.

Kidding aside…I dig Sting and consider him a master songwriter, but Dominic has been such an integral component of Mr. Sumner’s music and has inspired MANY musicians such as myself. I hope listeners can hear and appreciate the delicate subtleties that Dominic brings to the compositions. And he seems like such a genuinely humble and gracious cat.

An incredible and tasteful musician.
I have been aware of Dominic for some time but recently heard him playing with Sting in Christchurch and he blew me away with his colouration, texture, clarity and his contribution sympathetic to the songs in my opinion was exemplary. Everything he played was 'Gold' , like it meant something. His sound was solid when needed. It's sublime. What an absolute master.

I have seen Sting with and without The Police and there is no comparison - Sting, Andy and Stewart on stage are a powerful musical force, the sound they make, the enormous energy is other worldly
Dominic is one another planet. He has the best sound, compositions, parts and musical narrative of any guitarist ever. I met him 3 times. He's such a nice humble genius. His music resonates and connects.
So lovely to see this interview with Dom. He is my favorite guitarist, he puts a lot of his feeling in his music. He plays so long with Sting but has also so long his own music style. He is a multi guitarist A big artist, a big guitarist and a humble man. Love him a lot. I saw him in Brussels with Sting at Vorst Nationaal in Brussels October 17th in 2022.

Really enjoying listening to Sting at the moment, but a huge Steely Dan fan for 46 years. Surprised, but very pleased to hear Dominic mention Keith Carlock. He's an incredible drummer. Sting and Donald Fagen are on the same level of genius.

Great interview, just wish the audio level was a bit louder maybe some limiting - he's very soft spoken. I loved what he said about leaving space in his instrumentals (for the listener to imagine counterpoints) I try to do that as well, its fun because it helps keep songs evergreen. :)

What a wonderful thing to say, that he likes his listeners to feel a collaboration with him when they're listening to his music. That's exactly what happens to me - he will strike a series of chords and I will feel not only the beauty of it, but also as if someone out there really understands me!
Sting relies so heavily upon Dominic's elusive yet somehow authoritative playing style, it's what he built the second half of his career on. Without Dominic in his arsenal Sting would have been floating from point to point and not even having a point. There are players who make a living off of ''smooth jazz'' that never really got what it was supposed to be, other than a commercial avenue for them to ride on, Dominic IS smooth jazz. He's that cat who we all know can rock but it never bothers us when he teases us with it, steps right up to the edge of it, then backs away - because he's too cool to pander with frivolous showy bullsht. Good interview. I like when you asked about his views on drummers, that instantly took him somewhere else and it was ON.

PS. Dominic was only born in Argentina from am American father and Irish mother, and left as a kid. His father father’s job then moved
Dom to England forma whole which is where his English accent comes from…

I suspect he’s more inclined to do this interview, based on his experience of the interview he and Sting did with Rick Beato.

@@robm3569 "The Bells of St Thomas" is based on motif from Miller's solo piece.
@@endlsrvr I figured it must be something along those lines, they've been co-writing together now for a couple of decades and turning out some of the most interesting music in the jazz/pop/rock genre, which they helped to shape/create. May it continue to be ever so.

did you ever hear his solo albums ? lol ok guy he can play with sting he can play chords and its difficult because stin g is a great self musician ! very original , but dominic cannot do a simple solo , hes very limited player , ok he took the summer sound and repeat it and on and on but he s a bad soloist and he was lucky to get this place with sting lol ! hes a kind of classical guitarist , but the electricity its over him !

What you ACTUALLY said, was he's "a very limited player". That is your opinion, but it is not borne out by the facts... i.e he's has played on a whole load of albums, by a large variety of artists and also has whole batch of very varied solo albums. Hard to imagine that a "very limited player" would be able to achieve all of that, over career spanning decades. Try and seek that professional help I mentioned previously!
