Hey guys! Today we're gonna talk about Supergiant Games' HADES, and its main hero, hot anime Karkat--I mean, Zagreus, the Prince of the Underworld. We talk about his potential Classpects, but really it just gives me a chance to talk about what a swell guy he is to everyone around him and why I love him so much. I love how you accept that Zag could be both a Prince AND a caring person. So many people assume that Princes are inherently dangerous and violent, so this take was very refreshing.
While there's some danger in literally interpreting the classpect titles, there's also danger in seeing them as a restrictive descriptor. A lot of the reasons for Zag to be a Bard boil down to "He's not a terrible person" which seems an awfully narrow way to interpret Prince-hood. I'd argue that Zagreus is a depiction of a *healthy* kind of Prince in the Sburb system (in ways our other two HS-canonical princes are not). He's still an active character who took his fate into his own hands. The fact that he's generally courteous and respectful to almost everyone who isn't his dad (or Theseus :D ) seems more a reflection of Blood than anything else.
Both Bards in canon are terrible people. That is not the reason. The reason is that some of the destruction Zagreus only indirectly causes, rather than doing it himself.
He is of course a very healthy example of a destroyer.

But to be fair, I don't think she did anything important for hot anime karkat other then a bit of exposition and comedic relief.

Perhaps a Prince who has successfully incorporated the "Heir" into his story..?
I mean, like you said, he is incredibly strong willed, and is/was EXTREMELY selfish long ago.
But, we see him mellowed out, and EVERY time he destroys some relationship, or finds on in tatters, he CHANGES it for the better.
And as the LITERAL heir of the underworld....
I think it fits.
Any problems you can see..?
the thing is, he is explicitly not an heir because of the fates' prophecy even in the story itself and is very unhappy being shoved into the role in the flashbacks (which may indicate an unsuccessful roleplay, if you will)
i personally think he's a prince who is just kind to other people it's not like it's weird for active players to do that
most of his destruction is proactive (aside from birth circumstances), whether it's using family help to beat up shades on the way up or destroying boundaries and restrictions of others to make things better
But he DOES use magic. And he uses it in many ways. The burning of old contracts to make new, CHANGED ones, for one.
And his weapons, most of them are magic.
Besides, he literally walks out of a pool of blood, appearing in there, just so see his father, his own blood.
And an Heir can be unhappy with their enheiretence, no..?

Yeah he definitely fits the bill of a Prince more. One trend among the two official Bards Gamzee and Cronus is that both don't go out of their way to be antagonistic in a charming way but they're just a fucking blight in a way that just barely seeps past unbearable enough to make people want to outright kill them normally.
The way Blood is talked about in Hades' text, I'd be surprised if at least one of the writers wasn't a Homestuck nerd themselves.
Personally I think that Zag's relationship with Blood is one much more of Changing than of Destroying, so I see him as an Heir, but your point about his destruction of contracts is definitely one I hadn't considered and is a pretty good piece of evidence! I've seen him as an Heir of Blood throughout my playthrough of the game so by now it'll be hard for me to change my perception of him but this Classpect analysis is on-point as it always is from you!
I also see his parents as pretty clearly a Lord of Doom and a Muse of Life, but if anyone has analyses about them or of other characters I'd LOVE to hear it.
How about you do this for the classical Greek gods, the 12 Olympians. You could make a session of 12 SBURB players potentially. Or maybe they would play SBURN. Maybe replace Hephaestus with Hades, seeing how the blacksmith is already in the game XD

@@369destroyer muse of doom. He commands those who are affected by the doom aspect. This isn't an active affect of his though.
Some of the aspects' descriptions from the extended zodiac seems to have some kind of connections to the troll dancestors
Heart - mage - "It wouldn't be a stretch to call them 'self-obsessed', but not necessarily in a negative way. They simply want to understand the one thing we all are stuck with for our entire lives, i.e. our own minds."
Hope - bard - "They may sound like all sunshine and rainbows, but they aren't adverse to a little destruction, especially if they think they can replace it with something better and more just."
Rage - prince - "They posses great contempt for lies or false ideas, including the stability that false ideas can impart. To them, the true is far more important than the good; they would tear down a system just to destabilize it if, by their reckoning, it is built on faulty premises."
Light - sylph - "They are great alchemists, able to take multiple sources of information and synthesize them into something useful."
Void - page - "The unknown doesn't scare them-where others might see emptiness, they see potential. A blank page, an empty canvas, that's what the Void-bound live for."
Blood - seer - "They are prophets, rather than generals, giving others the strength and motivation to keep fighting."
Doom - heir - fates chosen sufferers
Definitely blood aligned, but the significance of receiving power from others has me leaning knight or maybe heir.
as a bard of blood i feel very happy that i now know so much more about my classpect. i feel like i can definitely a bard of blood i relate so much to the character of hades. thank you oD

Its also a coincidence, but he does have weird colored blood by God standards, because of his lineage, his mom, persephone, is half mortal, her mother being demeter and her father being an unnamed human, its an interesting coincidence

Okay, as someone who only has a passing glance knowledge of homestuck, one concept I know was not explored is the possibility of fusing classpects to create new classes. Zagreus in this game plays the part of both fairy and royal of blood under the active self rather than the passive other. He has the fairy immortality trait through a river of blood and does create relationships with others before he destroys their corrupted bonds, oftentimes against their wishes.
Definitely insightful look into his character. That’s definitely what I like about HS classpects, they make for great frames to analyze a characters actions. Its interesting to say he’s more of a bard because his destruction comes at the service of others, cause it clearly does- as a god of blood, life, and most likely rebirth, he unfortunately doesn’t get to see those things through for others outside the underworld. And yet he still goes through and makes changes to things anyway. I’m just sad that means he’d have to wear that outfit

These kinds of videos are REALLY good. Taking the classpect system and using it for other media is always awesome since it gives you a new outlook on your favorite characters
When I first saw Zagreus all I thought about was hot Karkat Vantas.

btw, sometimes i noticed weird distortions in the voiceover, like it were sped up in few moments. it was a little bit distracting and made it harder to understand but that might just be me

I'd say that he's the Bard Side.
Bards are wild cards and can be dangerous, yes; but just as early games, and Dark Souls series, have Joke classes, the Bard is the Joke Class of the zodiac. We're talking the most beat down, abused and laughably weak game class here-- which is something, given that our only Homestuck Example is the wildly "successful" Gamzee Makara.
That's because a Master Bard is the greatest Danger in a game. If you managed to spend time and patience mastering and skillfully using a joke class, you will become the most powerful player in the game-- because by that point, you can literally do anything.
And that is Zagreus. This is a Rogue-Like, and he dies repeatedly. He is smacked down by monsters of all sorts, and when he reaches his goal, it kicks him back (not on purpose, the blood that empowers him is also the blood that destroys him). That is not the humiliation of a Prince Class, that is the humiliation of the Bard.
And just as Gamzee Makara switches to Active in the Horror-Stuck portion of Homestuck, we're witnesses Zagreus' switch. A bard can only take so much before they snap, and have to reevaluate.
You could say that Zagreus developed a "Barding" (Armor), and has "Barred" others to and from Blood.
( Inadvertently, while Gamzee Makara is the most obvious Bard example-- the less obvious one is Clubs Deuce / Courtyard Droll, who is a Bard of Doom. He is often the most kicked around, but has the highest kill count. )

At first I thought Hades aspect is time since that deals with death and finality, but really he seems to be more associated with Space given is obsessive management of the underworld and his distant relationship with pretty much everyone

Sorry this question isn't exactly on topic, but I have a question about the HSE series.
What's your take on the sylladexes? As I understand it they exist outside of SBURB and are intrinsic to Homestuck (the narrative medium) itself, yet it's unclear as to how it exists in-universe and how it interacts.
Additionally, the sylladexes occasionally hint at motivation or sentience (for example, when the Chastity Modus chooses to destroy the Matriorb). We know that we can consider SBURB as sentient, but the sylladexes are not a part of SBURB. So does this mean that Homestuck itself, the story, is sentient, or at least motivated / possessing agency?
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, I haven't watched your entire HSE series yet but I've checked the video descriptions and I don't think you go into depth on the inventory system
If you'd allow me to throw my two cents in, Sylladexes, the earlier ones at the very least, were meant to be a sort of opener to the grander themes in Homestuck. Most of Sylladexes reference data structures and in doing so imply something about how they "captchalogue" their items, by my estimation, turning them into data.
It seems to imply that in the world of Homestuck that the Material and the Metaphysical are intertwined. The way Alchemy works backs this theory up, combining an item's data with another item's data to make a new physical item, even the Hope-bound seem to be able to do something to that effect. Another argument for this theory is The Condesce's ability to use her Thief of Life powers outside of SBURB's influence. SBURB in this manner seems to function more so as an extent of the universe's will, if there even is one. Although there is a very real possibility that it is because of Doc Scratch or any of the malevolent forces corrupting the world in Homestuck.
I feel that there is a very real possibility of the former, SBURB or the Homestuck universe at large is known for being very hostile to the kids in Homestuck; Would it really shock you if a world that is known for condemning billions of alternative version of a select few kids to death for not picking the "right" options would actively go out of its way to not only destroy any chance the trolls have of re-birthing their race but to also destroy the hope of the person who decided it their purpose. The kids have to go out of their way to cheat the game and exploit any and all weaknesses just to have even the slightest chance of victory, let alone be a part of the proper timeline.
