I'm so incredibly proud to have been a part of this performance. Singing that piece with this wonderful group of people was so special to me. This will always be my favorite choral piece because of all the fond memories I have of singing it with Chapel Choir.
Note to any directors watching this: If you're performing in a place with a lot of echo (like a huge cathedral) pause at 1:17 and 2:57 (the equivalent measures in the music) and just let it reverberate. Goosebumps guaranteed, every time.
Lutheran Rev. Paul Gerhardt was blessed by God in his ability to write beautiful music for the glory of God. Do yourself a favor and search for the words to this hymn.
Just adding to what nmganoe stated. Fantastic performance and I was proud to be a member of the choir. (not this particular one) Unfortunate that some people don't realize that this is the 2nd choir at Concordia. I am not trying to put down any other private college nor am I going to compare them. They all give me goose bumps at times.
Great singing and choir - but this must never replace, or undermine the pure preaching of the word of God. This is always the danger with choirs in churches.
I don't think you'll ever find a hymn writer more focused on the word of God than Paul Gerhardt. Lutherans demand that hymns do more than just carry a good tune --- it's the words that count. If you're going to complain about Lutheran music I think you should spend some time listening to some of the sing-songy, repetitive, non-Biblical garbage that comes out of American evangelism.
@@johnmarquardt1991 I wasn't complaining and I'm sorry you took it as that - I was merely making the point that just as you rightly point out about the repetitive non-Biblical garbage of American Evangelicalism that there is also a danger that choir singing (on the other side of the equation) supplants the pure preaching of the word of God - and in effect becomes no different to the banal singing of the aformentioned movement, only in a different way with different music. The end result will still be the same - preaching supplanted by singing entertainment in church. Exactly what Luther opposed in the day and would also oppose today. He would already be turning in his grave if he knew Lutherans were singing Catholic pieces..

Sounds like Heaven

This is my favorite choral song and this is now my favorite performance of it on UA-cam
Another fantastic performance from Concordia Chapel Choir, which is quickly becoming the norm for this ensemble! Congratulations!

What- what do ya mean?
Gerhardt mostly wrote texts while Johann Crüger wrote the tunes and harmonizations for Gerhardt's texts.
I agree, the words were so much more powerful than even this moving performance
Beautiful! Our church's Christmas choir just began rehearsing this piece. What a treat to hear it sung by this wonderful choir!
Immensely beautiful! This is one of my favorite choral pieces, and this recording is sublime.

Ideally, the music is preaching the Word of God. It isn't an either or situation.
