arranged by James Erb
(Lawson Gould)
O Shenandoah, I long to see you,
And hear your rollong river,
O Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Way, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.
I long to see your smiling valley,
And hear your rolling river,
I long to see your smiling valley,
Way, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.
'Tis sev'n long years since last I see you
And hear your rollong river,
'Tis sev'n long years since last I see you
Way, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

When we performed this 20 years ago, I couldn't get through the song without tears. And listening to it today, it brings tears to my eyes. This song is the epitome of perfection. It heals.
Who are you in the choir (not expecting response as this was 7 years ago lmao)
It gives me shivers
I might have heard you singing with this fine choir in Grand Rapids, MN in the Myles Reif Center back then. I wonder if you were with them then. Beautiful then and now.
me, cleaning the kitchen today while listening to this song 😭😭😭😭
@@brockdoesyoutubev254 I don't know if you will see this a year later, either, but for whatever it's worth, I don't think the OP is saying he was in this recording, which the description says was made in 2012, just a day before it was uploaded to UA-cam and just two years before Kyle's post. I don't think he is even saying he was in this choir, just that whatever choir he was in twenty years before his post (now 28 years ago) also performed the same song.
I sang this in my high school choir. It still gives me chills.
Aegis ASMR same
Same here. One of my favorites we ever did. That and The Battle of Jericho.
Me too ❤
Same here
yea same here. one of my favorite pieces i sung.
15 years ago we sang this at my high school spring concert (senior year) and it was magnificent. I will never forget the moment I almost broke out in tears, on stage. This song is truly so beautiful. 💜
when this opens up with all the parts I cannot even deal. The beauty.......
I have to say, this is a wonderful version of this song. The choir weaving to and fro was causing motion sickness
effect though, for me . The singing, is beautiful .
I will listen again with my eyes closed.
I wish I could find a better recording of this particular performance. This is the most pure unison I have ever heard in my life in a live performance!
This choir has an amazing recording of this song on a CD titled "Voices - a Contemporary Choral Collection" published by Windham Hill in 1995.
I love how the whole choir undulates as one big vocal pipe organ. It feels like a river in motion. Beautiful!
YES!!! INDEED!! JUST like a river!
let's coin a new word for this unique kind musical performance brilliance: MOUSAMATOPOEIA -- may i also pursuade you to listen to Elvis' "Mystery Train" to compare and contrast? Listen for the whistle :)
One of the timeless gems in choral literature. So beautifully done.
the chord from the men at 3:01 ….gets me every time. chills. tears. purely angelic
St. Olaf in Dt. Olaf Minnesota not only gives awesome music performances that bring you tears. Renowned in its history and have traveled Internationally. I watch them every year and am overjoyed each time.
Listen to St. Olaf’s choir singing “Night of Silence/ Silent Night”...one, if not the, most amazing versions of this Christmas classic EVER...absolutely stunning.
What a special GIFT! They are simply angelic like. I can only wonder what the angels in Heaven must truly sound like. This is a little taste of Heaven. How could u not be brought to tears listening to it?✌️💗✌️💗
Do you know Rose Nylund?
A man that loved a woman that could never have her.
A broken heart that could never heal .
I think it's about homesickness.
I'm so happy to be singing Tenor 1 in this piece
Super cool!
Any better recordings of the same arrangement? It's quite something.
Spoopy I sang this 2 years ago I was a tenor 2 in this song

The male voices are exquisite. Very impressive.
I'm singing this in middle school, its a highschool level. We're really proud
their tone and blend is absolutely beautiful. perfection. absolute perfection. My choir is doing this song and I hope for it to be as beautiful as this.
Yess, I was about to comment on the same! They do sound like ONE!
My God, the incredible resonance at 1:30 gives me chills EVERY TIME! Just WOW. Can't get enough of this arrangement.
Do you know what this arrangement is called? And how I can find all the parts for it
I feel fortunate to live in the upper midwest where St. Olaf, Concordia, Bethel, Luther, and Wartburg are, just to start the list of awesome choirs. Many have Christmas concerts that are broadcast on Public TV and those are wonderful to see again and again.
Same. St Olaf is about 10 minutes south of where I live in Farmington. Such an amazing program
This choir is soooooo talented. There is a lot of gifted individuals in there. And as ONE there simply angelic. So beautiful!
One of the best collegiate choirs in the world! So lovely and pure...
Russ Guy really?!
This is the second piece of music that has ever made me cry and not only did I cry, I wept. This song is so emotional and was so beautifully performed. Thank you for sharing your wonderful God-given voices.
I'm doing this song for allstate. Every time I sing it with a choir my heart melts and I get the chills, it's one of the best feelings in the world.
+Olivia Marquez im in all state too and we are doing this song too
This was my favorite song in all state four years ago. Sadly the stage was so hot and I got overheated. If I had opened my mouth to sing, I would have puked. I’m still sad I never got to sing it.
Im 13 years old. I live in Michigan! I am in a choir in my school and we are singing this song! We are an amazing choir, and even though we are 7th and 8th graders, we are amazing!
Dear St Olaf Choir,
Never change.
Love, Jeremiah
I have loved the music of the St Olaf's choir for along time. This version of this piece is so good. My high school choir sang this piece in 1969. I have missed hearing it. Thank-you so much for sharing it.
We sang this in my choir. It is one of the most beautiful peices of music ever written and makes me love God and America. This is AWESOME.
I am a graduate of Luther College which has its own traditions but I appreciate the perfection of St. Olaf's choirs. Both institutions as well as all the ELCA church schools use music as an expression of God's wonder, grace and beauty. I am blessed by this music. Thank you.
I heartily agree with everything you wrote. Being an ELCA church member myself, this music lifts my spirit.
This is a truly inspiring choral rendition of Shenandoah. It lifts the soul and brings peace into the world. It is truly beautiful.
I needed to hear this beautiful song today. Thank you everyone involved. It is healing indeed.
I remember myself sitting and listening to our high school choir.. This beautiful song brings so much memories .. it was in 2005 when i auditioned and joined Imus Institute Pitch Choir ..
And it's 2020 ..i still listen to it.. thanks for this wonderful performance, St. Olaf Choir. Perfect for me.
This song is AMAZING!!!! I love how they made the song so fluent and so solid. I love it. I give this a superior. Wonderful job St. Olaf Choir. Well done
The St. Olaf Choir sings holding hands. The unique amoeba-like swaying is a visual depiction of the unison that the choir feels the music together. Close your eyes and listen... it fits the text.
2:53 where the soprano's start the Oh Shenandoah line, and the 2nd's and Alto's repeat up to the 3:00 mark gives me goose bumps and tears. That part is the icing on the cake, and even thinking back to when we performed this back in school, this was always my favorite part.
This speaks to the heart, Anton Armstrong. From a Lutheran church choir, to what this ensemble is and means today.
It was a privilege to sing under F. Melius's son Paul C. Christiansen, Olaf's brother, from 1983 to 1985. We, too, concluded every performance with Beautiful Savior. In a conducting lesson given by Paul Christiansen at Concordia he shared a bit about his time in Europe. Like his father in Leizig and the Thomanerchor, Paul J. Christiansen studied abroad, too, and immersed himself in Gregorian chant at the Solesmes Abbey. I still clearly remember 36 yrs later him sharing how he sat on a park bench one day, maybe in Paris, and saw a newspaper page lifted up by a slight gust of wind, and how it settled down from above him, swinging lazily down: "This," he said, "is how to phrase plainchant - just this way." (based on my recollection)
Splendidly beautiful. I always felt like choirs underutilized the Bass 2 line in this song, perhaps because most choirs don't have men with that kind of range. But if you've got it, let it rip, and that's exactly what you guys did. Fantastic.
Seamless!......Amazing discipline!....Super Choir!..Even the subtle wave of purple robes illustrate the waves of the "wide Missouri."
I was only comparing the robes to waves of the Missouri River. I already knew the point you're making.
This is beautiful.
We sang this in choir when I was in high school many years ago. Not a dry eye in the house. When it's done right, it's incredibly moving to witness.
Thanks for sharing this!
this song brings back a lot of memories... I sang this in high school choir. This sounds great on the video but to really experience the beauty of this song you must experience it in person or even better as part of the choir. I will never forget this song!
The most pure version of this songI have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Brings me to tears and gives me joy🎉
13 years ago I stood in that choir. T'was one of the most remarkable experiences of my life.
Simply amazing! I have sung this arrangement in my choir (a high school choir) and I thought we were alright, but boy! Anton Armstrong and his choir just blew us out of the water! The amount of passion put into this song by every single choir member is simply awe-inspiring, let alone Dr. Armstrong's obvious passion for this piece. I have been in a choir directed by Anton Armstrong, and he really is just amazing :) I hope our High School Choir can put as much passion into our music as this choir!
This is my favorite version of that song. How I wish I was there when they sang that piece. It's a different experience when you hear it live. It'll give you goosebumps and it might even make you shed a tear.
The men make me melt. Warming my heart. bbbbbeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuutifuuuuuuuuuul
Wonderful to see the swaying of the singers, all of them, but apparently because each one of them felt the serenity on his or own. Uncontrived.
My favorite arrangement of this song to sing and to hear. St. Olaf is always top notch.
I sang this song with my school choir más de didnt like the song because it was too much work(i know we were lazy) but when we preformed it was our favorite piece to this day
We did this version of Shenandoah for a choir performance when I was in the 1st grade. I'm 24 now and it's been in my head ever since. This is the first time I've found the version we learned and I'm actually tearing up at the moment. So gorgeous.
I'm surprised you had men who could hit the low c in first grade!
I know right? Maybe it had something to do with the cafeteria food
Amy Ashcraft same here! im 22 now and have been known to randomly belt out "shenandooaaaahhh" lol!
Beautifully sung. This song has much deeper meaning than most know
Absolutely Brilliant! damn good choir.
If this isn't, the most beautiful rendition of this song then I would really love to hear anything else out there. This Choir is superior! I have to tip my hat to the Director and the Choir, as a whole. Unbelievably beautiful to listen to. Takes my mind back to my days on the Stillwater River in the Miami Valley in SW Ohio.
I think the when Sissel sang this song, it was much better. But this definitely is the best choir rendition of the song I have heard.
Very impressive! I'd love to have a CD.
greg j For a solo version this is my absolute favorite; www.google.com/amp/s/ratiocinativa.wordpress.com/2013/07/09/shenandoah-sung-by-peter-hollens/amp/.
It's a slightly faster tempo which I absolutely love!
Absolutely gorgeous! I sang this with my community chorus, but this is way out of our league. Wonderful choir and director.
Oh God.... This got me all misty eyed.
This reminds me of something from the portuguese literature. It's been writen by Fernando Pessoa (who's probably the most philosophical poet I know)
"God wants
Man dreams
The deed is born"
This video is a proof of it!
Beautiful and pure. America
My God, how absolutely beautiful.....those onions, they are everywhere for some reason.
The best arrangement of a truly great melody by the great composer Anonymous. I've sung this one and it's so beautiful. Only marred by someone singing along for some reason in the audience.
I can see the water flowing! The sound is perfect. What a great and magnificent choir are you!
Beautiful! I sang this in high school choir, thanks for letting me relive some of those memories. One of my all time favorites we ever did. And one of the most memorable.. even 30 years later!
We sang this in 9th grade in choir... now i'm 20 and started college and I miss highschool, the simpler life and my old highschool friends...
Standing Tall and Looking Proud........OUTSTANDING !!!!
Wow! I’m hypnotized by the sounds of this group, near perfection. Great song Shenandoah - a classic!
I did this my sophomore year in high school. I wish my director would let us do this song again, same with the awakening. Oh this song gives me chills!
My choir is performing this at our next concert, and I can only hope that we sound half as good as this. Wow.
This is one of the most beautiful choirs I've ever heard!
Heavenly voices.......
Amen haleluya
So beautiful! It brings tears to my eyes. The middle section sounds like rolling water. Wonderful.
I sang this arrangement of "Shenandoah" for State Honor Choir in Oklahoma when I was a senior at Norman High School in 1985. It's one of the most beautiful and difficult arrangements I ever sang.
I hear that! 1991 all state Kansas choir...want to find out who arranged it...bet that person has arranged several phenomenal songs..
A good choral blending, a very well managed dynamics of the song, good articulation of the words, generally , a good choir performing good music, hey this is good work.
I loved singing this at St. Olaf ♥️
One of the most beautiful pieces of work I've ever heard! :)
This is the most beautiful arrangement I've heard, and this performance is flawless. The choir's skills are awesome!
My high school choir performed this arrangement and in all my years singing it is still one of my favorites. I found myself singing along to the alto part :)
One of my favorite pieces back in high school choir, got me chills everytime i sing.
Wish I could have the opportunity to sing this in a big choir again. Squandered my opportunity by not learning it to the point of confidence when it comes to coming in as an alto at that canon part.
Wow, you guys held that last note to fade so beautifully!
Beautiful performance.. Fantastic
Cosmo B. ķ
You know a song is beautiful when you start crying (which I am doing right now.) INCREDIBLY well done!
This is my favorite song from choir days. Your performance brought tears. Thank you for doing this song justice.
I picked to sing this song for my school's vocal competition and I never regretted it!! Such a beautiful piece ❤️
Absolute chills.
this piece (the james erb arrangement) always makes me bawl like a baby. soooo beautiful. and lovely performance here!
Love watching this knowing I have friends performing in this choir. Maybe my favorite version of this arrangement. The blend and tone is impeccable. Pure perfection. :)
Oh, and I love you too Dr. Armstrong, He is so much like my high school choir director, who now teaches the Turtle Creek Chorale when it comes to musicality, and excellence. I got an opportunity to meet him on several occasions, one being conducted by him, and it is truly an experience to work with such an obscenely superb musician.
I agree, it always brings tears to my eyes....loved it ever since we sung it in high school choir
we sang this song in a gathering of choirs when I was in high school............mom said there wasn't a dry eye in the audience.........
It's so that everyone moves together dynamically and emotionally. It's one thing to just listen to people around you. When you can hear AND feel the people you're touching move with the music, it makes it easier to blend with them. It sounds strange, but it's so effective.
We are singing this in my choir and going to contest with this in Oklahoma its really powerful.
[I so much as look at the lyrics] **tears**
That is the effect this song has on me.
I'm playing the flute trio version soon :')
Beautiful! We did this in High School. Love this arrangement.
LOVE THIS SONG! Great version!
This is one of the best and beautiful U.S anthem ,it's just beautiful .I First heard in it Oliver Stone's movie "Nixon"
Its kind of a long story on how i know this song. But a while back ago my one friend was singing in front of my class this song because they have to practice for the contest that is on the 14th of April and she sung this song and it sounded so beautiful that i had to hear it again, and i found this video and
To this day my favorite recording of the song.
All the nice Harmony brings chills to me very beautiful
i sang this in my middle school choir and hearing it still makes my chest get tight and my eyes watery
This is fucking beautiful. I have no other words to comprehend what I've just heard. Bravo!
Ah, the Lutherans can sing! There's another lovely recording of this Erb arrangement by Pacific Lutheran University's "Choir of the West, circa 1964, somewhere here on You Tube.
This is the most beautiful arrangement of this lovely folk tune - a sea shanty, I think. Choir of the West’s performance is stunning. A former pastor sang with it back in the ‘60s.
I was honored to be a part of the state chorale many years ago when I was in high school. We sang this version of this song. This is the first time I have ever heard it because I never saw a recording from our concert.
Thank you for the memories!
Truly Amazing! Perfect performance.
This is my favorite arrangement, and the bass section was solid!
I first heard this song while watching the movie The Good Sheppard. This is a beautiful song and well done imho.
Sublime. No other word suffices.
Beautiful. My school's choir did this for the spring concert :D
Beautiful I been out of school for 10 years and I sang this song my 7th grade year at the solo and ensemble and we got first place with this song love it
🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 loved this then 20 something years ago love it now 🥰😘
Well that is a fabulous performance. Well done choir and music director both.
