    Before anyone starts saying Nikon 1 system or Pentax Q is smaller, go check the dimensions. GM1 is indeed the smallest ILC digital camera.

      I've been looking at the 1 system lately, people seem to get some beautiful results from it! But there seem no lenses that are reliable there :/

      I have both the GM1 and a Q-S1 and personally prefer the Q because of the lens size and total weight. I can carry the camera with 3 or 4 lenses in a belt bag. Especially the Pentax 06 lens is very unique to the Q-line and doesn't really have anything comparable in the M4/3 range at that size and weight. The GM is way more capable in low light though.

Set camera to aperture priority F5.6 and Pre-MF to 3.5m (hyperfocal): no focus delay. More flexible set-up then the 7Artisans 18mm. The 7Artisans 18mm is cheap fun for local photo-walks.

    I think that if you just wanted a small camera that goes everywhere with a 35mm equivalent, and am not overly concerned with sharpness, then this may be an ideal combo. I have the "bigger brother" to the GM1 (the GF1) and may look into this lens (as I bought it with no lens for really cheap, like $50, but have been using adapters to adapt to DSLR and other ML lenses, but getting the 18mm or even the Olympus 17mm may make sense for a small compact street camera). I mean for $60 this can't be that bad and based on some of the sample images here and what I've seen online, I think it would totally be worth it. (I do agree the GM1 is a bit small and like the GF1 a bit better, although it is chunkier). I mean in some respects, setting the manual focus to infinity and just shooting is nice (of course you can do this with most lens/camera combos but I think the size of both the camera and lens here make it more enjoyable than say with typical APSC/DSLR which can stick out a bit and is more noticeable. Again, I think for just capturing street scenes where sharpness is not the priority necesarily, this does the job and is cheap.

GF+1 x 20mm f1.7 is the combo I used to use on street photos while on trips. I now carry a GX7 iii because it has a selfie screen. 🙂
    When I'm in town, I go back to the X-T20. Definitely thinking of finding my MFT system a new owner who gets to use it much more. It's an excellent compact system.
    No need to go for the smallest... GF-1 is a good size (small enough for pockets, big enough for hands).

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому +1

      Because smartphones don't have 35mm setup, had too much shutter lag, screen lag, operation lag, horrible colors, bad handling, too much processing on images that make them look so fake and overbaked, well... Are these enough reasons?

    I hate having to look through the screen to take a photo. it needs a viewfinder. When will manufacturers learn this?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому

      Try moving the camera away from your eyes, then you will find more creative compositions. Shooting through viewfinder all the time creates boring images. Live view is the future.

    Have you thought about putting the 20mm 1.7 Panasonic lens on this body instead of this manual lens? It's almost la pancake lens with AF 🙂
    Also, i feel like a display is much harder to use in bright sunlight, this would be amazing with an EVF
    Loved the video!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому +1

      The display was perfectly fine. No EVF needed.
      Panasonic 20mm AF is sooooooooooo bad I'd rather just manual focus. Also, the lens diameter is too large for the small body of GM1, it looks funny.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому +1

      GM1 + 18mm is still SMALLER. And 9mm on NX1 Mini is NOT 35mm. You are missing the point completely.

  • @dingoeatswolf3663
    @dingoeatswolf3663 4 місяці тому

    The size of that front element is barely larger than a phone camera lens…just as I get to your ‘sub par lens’ section LOL…took the words out of my mouth. Yep, the lumix Leica 15mm, oly 17mm or the lumix 20mm would probably render better images. Even the 12-32mm lumix zoom that the gm was originally released with makes for a great combo. Cheers from down under 👍

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому +1

      The point is - the lens is crazy tiny, and cheap. All the other lenses produce better quality with AF of course, but they cost 10 times or more, and are much bulkier, especially on the tiny GM1. Can't beat the size.

  • @thomasanderson5929
    @thomasanderson5929 4 місяці тому

    The Panasonic 12-32mm makes more sense; it's not THAT much bigger when the lens is closed, but it offers a ton more range, better bokeh (although not a lot more) it's stabilized and has autofocus. I don't think the size is an issue when it's opened during use.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому +4

      Panasonic 12-32mm is a poor street shooting lens. The extra step to extend the lens before use will slow me down and cause me to miss important moments. I won't leave the lens extended, as I don't have the camera out all the time, with the lens extended and being inside the bag, it is the quickest way to destroy the lens. Also, 35mm is a nice focal length for street. 12-32mm requires you to "zoom" to 35mm, which is yet another step too many.
      As a casual shooting lens, 12-32mm is great. For street, I'd rather use Lumix 15mm F1.7, for example, but we all know how much that lens costs.

    • @thomasanderson5929
      @thomasanderson5929 4 місяці тому

      @@robinwong Personally, I'd prefer the 20mm f/1.7 II over the 15mm, it's even smaller and cheaper with the same aperture. I'd rather have that and the 12-32mm on me for a bit more versatility as an everyday carry setup in a pancake lens setup, both lenses are super pocketable, the 12-32mm extending it's size when in use doesn't bother me and I dont mind having to manually extend it each time either.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому

      That 20mm is soooooo slow in AF, I'd rather manual focus

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 місяці тому

      These lenses are also infinitely more expensive than the 18mm 7Artisans, and at totally different focal lengths. If you want a 35mm equivalent, this is not a bad choice.

    • @randomstuffman01
      @randomstuffman01 4 місяці тому

      On BHphoto now, the Pan 14mm is $200 USD, the 7Artisans 18MM is $60. I paid $150 CDN ($110 USD) used.
      And the Pan 14mm is much faster, auto focus, variable aperture, etc.
      I win ! Or not.
