Would you recommend this boat? On paper it's almost too good to be true - light, quick, compact, fully loaded with sea kayak features, even a rudder... and for a very good price!
Well, I might not be the right person to ask since I'm a beginner and it all depends on your own skill level and expectations. But as I use to say; "right tool for right purpose". However, from my point of view, I find the Åfjord 368 easy to handle, on and off water, good building quality and seaworthy for right conditions. Even used it loaded with camping equipment, food, and clothes for a three day trip of a total of 95 km. I weigh 78 kgs and had a load of approx 30 kgs. But short as the kayak is, its not fast, and it doesn't matter how hard you try, it won't go faster. If I would recommend this Kayak: Yes, I would, but You might want to buy a bigger one after a while though. I did, a VKV Lisa www.vitudden.com/kayaks/category/vkv/vkv-lisa-jubileum But I´ll keep the Åfjord for narrower waters and shorter trips...
@@perengstrom70 Thanks for the detailed review. Actually I like more compact boats, which is why the 370cm length and 22kg weight are ideal for me! As for speed I'd be quite content with 7km/h which I'm sure this boat can manage. I saw the low price for these boats and wondered if the quality is suffering, but it sounds like I shouldn't worry too much.
@@asfdestroyer De Nada! Just glad to be of assistance and share my experience with people with same interests. My retailer, fifth generation and the only one in Sweden now building kayaks, sells the Åfjord 368 which is the "top fo the line one", with three layer hull and fully equipped. There are cheaper models with single layer hulls and not fully equipped, but that I'm sure you're allready aware of. Aware of that, and that you get what you pay for, I'm quite sure you won't be disappointed with the Åfjord. So, bon voyage and enjoy your paddling :)
@@perengstrom70 The closest retailer to me is 350km away so before I end up going there and taking a day off from work, I'd love to be sure it's THE boat for me :) I notice you use a sprayskirt, is it necessary or is the kayak a dry ride without it (in normal conditions)? Also I often do diving and swimming so I'd need a stable kayak which I can get into from deep water - have you tried to "cowboy straddle", is it easy to get back into? Sorry for bothering you and thanks once again :)
@@asfdestroyer No worries, you´re not disturbing at all. Just fun to share as said before :) I´ll giv it a try to answer you, even if risking you setting off 350 km (one way?) just to turn out to be disapointed: It all depends on what a person consider as "normal conditions", but since the Kayak is so short, it stomps a bit in "short sea" and this causes some spray of course. This statement true when talking about paddling up wind, otherwise, no problem I would say. But then again, you can paddle in higher, large sea when the short kayak not stomping and then not causing spray...even up wind if the sea doesn´t break of course. I haven´t tried cowboy straddle, but using paddle float only. On the other hand, I had then never, ever before sat in a kayak and tried this once and succeeded in getting back and up and running in a minute, and with surprisingly small amount of water in it after flipping it back. To be considered is the fact, that if the rudder is in it´s stowed position, it can be in your way a bit... It feels quite stable, but if you lean to far out, it will tip over with quite short prewarning since it has a quite flat bottom. I often bring my camera with me, and if not leaning to far out with my Nikon D4 with a 70-200/2,8...it works fine ;) So, my attempt to give you a balanced answer, must be in the light of me beeing an absolute beginner. But today, after, lets say fifteen times and maybe forty hours of paddling the Åfjord, I fell much more stable and confident in it than the very first time...
Hi is this safe for beginners? I live in Stora Essingen, and I just wanted this for leisure paddle... ideally close to shore. My worry is about stability - and also, since I dont have a car, I was thinking of just carrying the kayak down to the shore - about a 500 meter walk from my house. so two questions: 1 - safe for begginers? 2 - can a person just carry it by hand safely to the water? or do i need to have a carrier with wheels for it?
Hi. Tricky question to answer, since it very much depends on each paddlers common sense and judgement. But yes, I wold say it's a great kayak for beginners and stable it is. To carry 3,68 mtr kayak weighing 23 kg about 500 mtrs? Well, I would go for a small kayak trolley...
