I think the ending is a commentary on how frivolous and throwaway TV is to its consumers. Truman is in their screens his whole life, and as soon as he leaves, the 2 guards just start surfing fir their next fix. Truman Show was a film that was miles ahead of its time.
I don’t know if I would say that this movie was ahead of it’s time, because it was very successful at the box office. Usually whenever a movie is “ahead of it’s time” it doesn’t do well at the box office. Now a movie that’s ahead of it’s time would be Tron (1982) That’s a movie that’s a perfect example of being ahead of it’s time
When I saw this in the theater I was disappointed we didn’t get to see what happened after he left, but later I decided it was the best ending. He walks out the door and he’s no longer on camera.
Truman leaving or choosing to leave is the only thing that matters. He steps into the dark, the unknown determined to become a real human being with a real life. It's the conclusion of his arc. The emotional core of the story. Everything that comes after is just the aftermath. Giving us an additional montage of him facing a horde of journalists under flashlights or hugging that woman or him working a real job would've lessen the impact of that ending.
Yes thats the end of the show we dont get to see their real life as the viewer we dont get to see it either. Which is why i like the ending, however understandable upon 1st viewing to want more of the ending. I think they got it though as it is. Pretty much.
Exactly. Anything after Truman's exit would be good for a sequel. A "Truman After the Show" type thing. But the story arc really does end when Truman walks out the door. That's the end of this story - and the beginning of the next one.
Also I feel like we as the audience "shouldn't" see what happens next. Truman has been observed for his entire life, so it's really fitting that the beginning of his "real" life should be the first time he experiences real privacy.
The crazy part is a lot of these kids, whose parents vlog all day for UA-cam, probably knows exactly how Truman feels. The camera has been in their face since they were conceived.
Especially when you are so famous that you have so much responsibility and schedules that you have no time to enjoy other things on your own but for them
The way I see it, the abrupt ending is a metaphor for Truman himself. Once he leaves that world, he's no longer the star and his private life is truly private. Once he walks through the world, he's gone to the audience as an object of entertainment.
I remember seeing this in theaters. Two big audience cheering moments: When he does the spaceman on the mirror and then says, "That one's for free." And we realized that he wasn't fooled anymore... audience exploded. And then with that final "Good afternoon, good evening and good night." We were like the audience in the film... so happy he got out.
While they can't change the weather on a whim, the town is that perfect looking in real life. The Truman Show was filled in the planned community of Seaside, Florida and all of its houses and streets really do look like it does in the movie. The only thing they changed in post production is they added height to the buildings around where Truman worked. In Seaside and east along the Gulf of Mexico down to Seacrest and Rosemary Beach in Florida no buildings are taller than 3 stories and those are rare.
He's at least 20. He has been on camera for every minute of every day of his entire life. At union scale, do you realize how much they owe him in back pay?
Anytime someone brings something random in a conversation I use a variant of the "What the hell are you talking, who you talking to?! What the hell does this have to do with anything" line.
This film wasn't predicting anything, it was highlighting how cameras were everywhere then because we'd been pointing them at each other for decades. If anything, it likely influenced the direction that reality TV took in the 2000s. The widespread accessibility of handheld cameras and video tape in the 70s and 80s allowed us to dynamically record everything instead of just taking photos and making the occasional home movie, and by the 90s we were tuning in for major events as they happened, like the OJ Simpson trial. MTV first aired "The Real World" in 1992, but with the advent of the internet and of camera phones, people displaying their lives for entertainment was inevitable. Also, I've always considered Jim Carrey's first dramatic role to be in _The Mask,_ because Stanley Ipkiss was such a contrast to what he was known for then. That was the first time I remember wanting to see him do more serious roles.
This was filmed just down the road from me all around the Seaside, Florida area and up and down Hwy 30A. In fact, my best friend showed up to watch some of the filming and got a job as an extra walking down the street in one of the scenes. While it looks like a Hollywood-made set it is actually a real place. Very weird to watch this and still go to these places. Stay safe everyone. Cheers from Florida.
The camera in his ring that he wore that his father gave him before he died, he gave back to his father after he returned to the show. So from that point they couldn't absolutely track his movements. Which ultimately helped him escape.
I remember how surprised I was seeing him play the serious role of a drug addict rocker in that old Dirty Harry film. It wasn't a huge role. But just seeing him play that character seemed so out place for him, I thought. He did well, though.
And nimrods like you who don’t see the amazing talent of Jim Carrey seems all too common but I guess it’s not very common because Jim Carrey is one of the biggest stars of all time as well he should be
Ed Harris was a main star in James Cameron's the abyss which doesn't get much love but I remember watching it on a laser disk in the early 90s and I loved it.
I think we all wanted to see more at the end which was the point. Truman is leaving this universe and entering one where we don't get to see what happens next. The show is over.
Also, the Truman Show was released not long before the start of "reality TV" like the Real World or Big Brother. So a lot of people see it as a cool prophetic piece of art that foreshadowed our current society, where celebrities like the Kardashians or Paris Hilton make a career on openly sharing their personal experience. Or even how so many regular people choose to constantly share their personal lives to the rest of the world with social media.
According to Peter Weir, Christoff started out with good intentions, but went kind of power-mad and turned into a raging control freak pretty early on. There's an in-universe documentary floating around on UA-cam that explains a few more things, including how Marlin became friends with Truman (and it implies that his alcoholism and stint in "rehab" were his way of dealing with the guilt): he met Truman as a kid not knowing it was a TV show, so he was genuinely Truman's friend before he found out the truth (it's probably why he was absent from school for a month).
In the original script there was a scene at the end where Truman is at Sylvia's apartment. He turns on the TV and they are account a new series. The network adopted a baby girl and are doing it all again.
This and Eternal Sunshine are Jim Carrey's best dramatic performances. 23 years ago this concept seemed absurd, nowadays it is not so far fetched a possibility.
@@jkhoover That's fair, it is a very strong performance, and Carrey obviously went to great lengths to portray Andy Kaufman to the best of his abilities. Although the method he took to get there definitely didn't make him any friends among the crew.

One of my fav films! Jim Carrey is great in it. If you want more drama with Jim Carrey I highly recommend 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', and if you want another comedic actor in a serious role I recommend 'Reign Over Me' with Adam Sandler, is so good. Also, I've noticed you do this for movies because people on Patreon asked you to know about the movies you're going to watch before you watch them, but please, don't do that anymore. @@BuffaloC305 the Majestic failed anyway… it was a huge flop, same with Number 23. The Majestic was a very boring movie and Number 23 was way “too far out there” for him
I want to see a sequel to the Truman Show just call Truman exploring his life 20 odd years later. Does he live in constant paranoia? Does he suffer PTSD? Is he still trying to escape media attention? What does he think of youtube and Instagram where people voluntarily record their life? Don't repeat the same story twice but have a real character exploration.
It kind of reminds me of JenniCam from the late 90s/early 00s, this college aged girl set up webcams all over her apartment (except the bathroom) and left them running 24-7 and anyone could watch for free. You saw - everything-. Rated PG or not if you know what I mean. The big difference is that she knew the cameras were there. Keep in mind it wasn't porn, she was fully clothed and just doing normal stuff 95% off the time. It was more like a sociological experiment.
Great movie, one of the first dramas for Jim Carrey - he can bring it when he wants. And this movie introduced me to one of the most beautiful Irish actresses I’ve ever seen - Natascha McElhone.

This is one of those films that begs for a sequel but I've never decided the time-afterwards. Immediately? (Ugh,no.) Five years? (No.) Ten? Twenty? Thirty? (That offers a chance to do flashbacks more effectively, and would give Truman a chance to have experienced a couple of new life-locations to endure before escaping a time or two, more.)

Uh… I’m not sure what you’re thinking because this movie IS a dramatic Jim Carrey movie. It’s his most popular dramatic movie, actually. Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean you have to be ignorant of what genre this movie is. I suggest you pull your head outta your ass and pay attention to reality here
I think that’s just the way this channel is, I’ve noticed that with a few other movies they’ve watched too. They cut out half the movie in the video 🤷♂️ Not sure why they do that
I do not mean this to come across as a negative criticism- but the fact that you want to keep seeing his story is kind of the point of the movie. Truman’s entire life was on TV and the moment he finally escapes and becomes free, we still want to watch. We still want to know. We ask ourselves “how could anyone do this to somebody? Fake their entire life for a TV show?”… and yet we still crave their story.
I’m still debating on whether I’d want to see a sequel to The Truman Show. I’d love to see what happened when he left and reunited with Sylvia but I also feel like his character had been violated his entire life from conception till age 30, so I feel like it’d come off very tone deaf and tasteless to bring it back as well. It’s a dilemma for sure.
"That's it? I wanted to see more"
I guess that's the point of the ending; that we don't get to see it, as his life isn't being filmed any more.
I think the ending is a commentary on how frivolous and throwaway TV is to its consumers. Truman is in their screens his whole life, and as soon as he leaves, the 2 guards just start surfing fir their next fix. Truman Show was a film that was miles ahead of its time.

Love this one! You guys need to watch the Snyder Cut next. I just saw that and it was great. It is 4 hours so you might want to split it up into 2-3 segments.
And another good Jim Carrey movie is Liar Liar from 1997 since you like his work. Also - The Cable Guy from 1997 is so funny too.
Maybe that is happening to us all right now?
If you want a Dramatic Jim Carrey movie,, you need to watch The Majestic ky only fsvorite Jim Carrey movie
Uh… I’m not sure what you’re thinking because this movie IS a dramatic Jim Carrey movie. It’s his most popular dramatic movie, actually.
Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean you have to be ignorant of what genre this movie is. I suggest you pull your head outta your ass and pay attention to reality here
This movie is jacked up. Half of the movie is missing!
I think that’s just the way this channel is, I’ve noticed that with a few other movies they’ve watched too. They cut out half the movie in the video 🤷♂️
Not sure why they do that
Love this movie !
EDDIE MURPHY.. HARLEM NIGHTS
This came out in 1998!! You guys still trip me out that you haven't seen this film before? LOL! Glad you finally did. It's great!! 😀
Truman is supposed to be 29
I love this movie 💞
I’m still debating on whether I’d want to see a sequel to The Truman Show. I’d love to see what happened when he left and reunited with Sylvia but I also feel like his character had been violated his entire life from conception till age 30, so I feel like it’d come off very tone deaf and tasteless to bring it back as well. It’s a dilemma for sure.
that's the concept how we as a consumer of media keep wanting more
We don't get to see the rest, Truman's private life is private now.
If you want more, you have to subscribe to his MySpace page 🤦♀️😑😳🙈🤭
you NEED to watch Uncut Gems, its a highlight in Adam Sandler’s career
I thought his wife was a famous star and the girl he liked was just an extra.
