I've learnt more in this 17 minutes than I knew about gardening in total! Thanks so much! I need to move a buddleia from a small raised garden bed to the middle of my front yard and this was a PERFECT explanation of what to do!

I revamped my front garden beds and did multiple retrains-planting of shrubs & evergreens. I had a great time doing it.

Love seeing your soil improvement! I have an area that has had the native soil removed, pale fill soil spread around and then compacted by machinery (ugh). I wanted to do a cover crop and then mulch but the soil has become so hard so I'll have to see if I can get a shovel in it. Worst case I'll just mulch, but I haven't even seen bugs in that area so I don't know if it will work as quickly as yours. Thank you for your videos. They are so fantastic in so many ways! - from a viewer in coastal NC

It’s sooo satisfying to see the soil improvement, isn’t it? After 3 years, the soil in my garden beds has a similar makeup of crumbly goodness over clay, except my clay is wetter and stickier, and baby poop brown (I could throw a pot with it).

Jim, could you take all those branches you cut back and stick them into pots of soil or directly into the ground at this time of year to start some new shrubs and spread them around your own garden? When I prune buddleias & hydrangeas in the spring, I stick the cuttings into big pots of wet soil and inevitably some root and bloom later that spring. Then I can plant them around other parts of my property. I know you can’t propagate patented varieties for resale, but you can pot up pruned cuttings for your own space. I’m just wondering if they will root if taken now in late fall, early winter. Thx, Jim! Love your channel!

When we're on a native plant rescue, repurposed sleds are the go-to for sizable plants.

This clay soil in Texas is ridiculous.
Operation “Compost and Cover” is on my list. I hope to see fairly quick results like you.
    Love the transplant tips!

Nice to be in shorts and a t-shirt in December! I purchased a Grand Cascade Butterfly Bush after seeing it in your garden, looking forward to its summer blooms. Great looking plant!

You've convinced me to try to move one of two paniculata hydrangeas I have together that I'm not happy with their placement. One's going to get predug around it and moved in a couple of months. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Now to decide where the one's going to get moved to! Thanks for your down to earth videos!

I have two of the 'Pink Cascade' butterfly bushes and for me they are growing much wider than tall so far. Mine are in all day sun though so maybe that is the difference vs. your 'Grand Cascade', or it could be that the pink variety spreads out a bit more. From 3.5" pots they grew to be about 6" tall by 24" wide in the first season and I'm definitely getting the weeping/spreading form of butterfly bush that I wanted when I bought them.

I like the way you went after the hydrangeas! I’ve got a couple of super scrawny ones on our property (probably planted in the late 80’s/early 90’s) wondering if I prune them hard will they bounce back or if I’m better off pulling them out completely? Blooms were super small and short lived. We’re in Ossipee 😃 I’ve learned a lot about gardening in our area from watching you - Thanks!!

I had no idea my plant was going to get this tall and now it’s blocking the trellis I have with vining flowers but it’s overwhelming imagining how to move this somewhere else because it is also connected to woody trunks from the previous year

I hope mine don't look bad out by the road. I planted a lot of them alternating with white knockout rose bushes to block my yard a bit from traffic. 6 ft in 1 season! That is a bit larger than advertised lol. Thank you for this video just incase worse comes to worse :)
    Hopefully not. But ya haha.

It has bigger flowers clusters and it stays fuller with less pruning, but I don't see that it actually stays smaller.

@@JimPutnam ya I think as long as I prune it low I should be ok. It is so beautiful that I honestly won't mind the height ad much as long as I maintain it well

We’re in zone 6b. Should we clean/shape panicle Hydrangeas in September? We would usually wait until spring. Late April - early May. Is the September shaping just to make it look less dire during winter? Is that safe for my 6b zone? Btw, the sled technique is genius! Our smooth hydrangeas usually gat blasted buds and we have no flowers. Is it safe to mulch with leaves or will they harbor pests? Should we shred the leaves first? If they’re deep will that create an anaerobic sitch?

Got a question. Are there different types of hydrangea? I cut mine back a couple years ago and nothing grew back until the following year. I haven't cut them back since because I hated not having them for one summer.

Hi Jim, I have a lace cap hydrangea planted too close to my brick house and it gets pounded with our summer heat and sun from morning til about 2-3 pm. I am considering moving it. It’s been in the ground at least 5 years or more, and blooms on new wood. Can I safely relocate it as you did here?

  • @trace9657

Is it alright to mulch with black walnut leaves?🎄💚🙃

    • @Taydrum
      @Taydrum 2 роки тому +1

NO. Black walnut is extremely alleopathic. Some plants are more tolerant of the compounds in the leaves, but most plants will be poisoned by the juglone contained in the leaves. I speak from experience.
