    I’m glad Adam Sandler is branching out more and doing serious roles. He’s shown that he really is a great actor when he wants to be.

    I think the age when someone finds something funny is a large part of this. For example, I watched Spaceballs when I was pretty young and have loved it ever since. That’s the comedy I’ve probably watched the most with at least fifteen viewings under my belt. When it comes to Adam Sandler, his comedy has never been high class. In the 90’s he pretty much always portrayed some kind of man child or slub. That was hilarious to those who were younger, but critics didn’t connect with that kind of humor because they were older. Now, those who grew up with Sandler roll their eyes at the Netflix comedies he’s done for the last ten years in The Ridiculous 6 and The Do-Over. It’s all about perspective in my opinion.

    Also much to my utter astonishment home alone a CLASSIC christmas comedy is only barely fresh on RT. I think that movie should easily have a score higher than 80 percent on rotten tonatoes like mrs doubtfire. Another example of why it feels to me like critics most of the tine dont really get comedies

    I've always thought a director should cast Sandler in a horror comedy like Ready Or Not, Abigail, or Happy Death Day. I think he could do really good in a roll like the evil dad in Ready Or Not, we know from Uncut Gems he has the acting skills to do more serious roles but he can also be pretty funny. I don't know, just a thought.

    I would also add it depends on your tolerance for his silly and wacky humor. Plus comedy is a real hard genre to judge cause most of them are judge based on how many times it makes you laugh

    I’m sure there’s a segment of the population still inexplicably nostalgic for 90s Sandler, but calling those movies “comedy classics” is a bit of a stretch. I was the prime target 90s white boy teen and even back then I found those movies mind numbingly obnoxious. I loved his comedy albums though.

    Critics have always hated his comedies, but there has been a shift in how he's made his comedies. As someone who grew up on Sandler, he pretty much did what Dwayne Johnson ended up doing which was focus on making his movies as broad as possible to appeal to the widest audience possible. And when it comes to making *comedies* as broad as possible, the humor tends to be relegated to cheap gags.

    I don't even think Adam Sandler himself enjoys probably half of his comedies. His Netflix lizard movie is extremely underrated. But he is very clearly over hated despite being easily more talented than most comedic actors, even putting aside his dramatic roles.

    I'll tell you my two main reasons why I dislike Adam Sandler as a comedian. One, he reminds me of this really annoying kid I went to school with when I was younger. This kid and I never got along, and what little bits of Sandler's comedy I saw reminded me of the kid. And secondly, I just don't find his movies funny. I've seen three Sandler movies - Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy and 50 First Dates - and I only laughed twice during the three movies combined. One was during the first minute of 50 First Dates when the mortician his character dated was talking to her friend while tending to a body, and the other was when Chubbs fell out of the window in Happy Gilmore - and I only laughed because the funny moments came from out of nowhere. The Waterboy is personally one of my least-favorite movies I've ever seen (people tell me otherwise, but I'm 99% certain the titular character is supposed to be mentally challenged and the movie felt like it was making fun of him). I respect that Adam Sandler is apparently a very, very nice person in real life - I've never heard anyone say they've had a negative interaction with him - but his comedies have never made me laugh. For the record, I was 15 when I saw my first Sandler movie.

    There are a bunch of critics that are those raise their nose, arrogant and pompous people that think Sandler's humor is beneath them.

  • @ramonek9109
    @ramonek9109 5 місяців тому

    Critics don't hate him. They just long for him to create some quality work, which he mostly doesn't but if he does he is usually applauded and praised. If he was genuinely hated people wouldn't root for him to succeed and be happy for him if he does.

    I worked at a gym part time for a few years. I was 28 when Hubie Halloween came out and so many of my coworkers that were under 20 thought it was good. I watched it based off their recommendations and didn’t like it. I think it signifies the generational divide there with his movies

    I was a massive Sandler fan as a kid, but I will say most of his movies have aged like milk if you really watch them as an adult not blinded by nostalgia. I think Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy are still fun, but Billy Madison has aged the worst. I think Grandma's Boys is the best Happy Madison movie and Sandler isn't even in it.

    I loved Adam Sandler movies as a kid, but going back to watch them some of them can be kind of hard to watch. I definitely think he’s gotten better as time has gone on. I think his most recent movie spaceman on Netflix was actually pretty good.

    He had some great comedies early on. His outrageous humor was unpredictable. We've seen the act too many times, it grew stale.

    • @BishopWalters12
      @BishopWalters12 5 місяців тому

      I agree, I also think his man-child characters get harder to pull off the older he gets. It was funny when he was in his 20s, 30s and maybe early to mid 40s even if that's pushing it but now, he's pushing 60. It can go from funny to sad pretty fast for all the wrong reasons.

  • @richardperaza5083
    @richardperaza5083 5 місяців тому

    To me the thing I like about most of his comedies is that they feel Adam grows in a way like in Big Daddy he’s a lazy person who has no goals until a kid comes in his life and learns to take responsibility and at the end where his ex was working at Hooters and he’s a lawyer got a laugh out of me and with Just Go With It a guys had been cheated on by his fiancée (ironically she was played by his real life wife) and is basically trying to see if he can get a new wife by lying about once having a family and then in the end he gets a new wife and family

  • @robertmarginean164
    @robertmarginean164 5 місяців тому +1

    It's because most comedies are not written to be good movies with layered characters. They're just written to be funny. The script tries to find ways to set up jokes instead of writing a good story first.
    When you think of other genres, like dramas, thrillers, even something more specific like westerns or war movies, while they have their certain aspects that make them distinct from other genres, they're still written to be good movies instead of trying to get a certain reaction out of people.
    That's why comedies and a lot of horror movies (apart from the the very best) get poor reviews: their main goal is not to be good movies, but to either make audiences laugh or make them scared

    Honestly for me since dumb and dumber as well as mrs doubtfire are either rotten on rotten tomatoes or in the case of mrs doubtfire only a 70 percent on RT, it feels to me like critics in general dont get comedies. Also i watched who's harry crumb for the first time not very long ago and i had a lot of fun with it but it has bad reviews. I think mrs doubtfire should have a score of 80 percent at least

      Agreed. I have a special emotional attachment to that movie as it was my grandma’s from my dads side favorite movie, but taking it as it is, and as someone whose parents are still married, it’s honestly just a super funny but equally mature and insightful movie on parents, relationships, divorce, the effect of it on the man and woman and the children. I can’t help shedding tears at the end with Mrs. Doubtfires final lines reassuring the viewer, it’s *DEEP*

    Well i real enjoy when he tries to do something more dramatic
    Like Uncut gems was great
    But even his dramatic comedies like punch drunk love or funny people
    And reign over me was really good

  • @NinthShinigami
    @NinthShinigami 5 місяців тому +2

    They’re not all the best, Little Nicky is one I personally despise. However, there’s some that are genuinely hilarious and never fail to make me laugh. I rewatched Happy Gilmore the other day and remembered just how entertaining it is. It’s not exploring something thought provoking or insightful, but you know what? It’s hella fun.
    Some critics just want or need more meat on their bones that’s all. To have something else worthwhile, like it being a tribute or spoof of something or the technical marvel Ghostbusters was in its time…

    To your point about, Sandler probably getting lazy. I think that's what the main problem is with his comedies. Every comedy he's done in the past, 20 years feels like they all have the same type of humor. You could swap the humor around in any of the movies he's done the past 20 years and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Almost all of his movies the last 20 years have very low hanging fruit humor and some pretty mean spirited humor with some weird zany voice thrown in there somewhere.
