I've been watching too many of these videos. When he said "Naturally the handle will be made of ash wood" I replied "Naturally" with the thought anything else would be barbaric
@TSIRKLAND the grain had to follow the blade. So the handle should be like a book in the eye of the axe or tool, so all the stress goes into each band side by side. If it is diagonal or pancake pattern, then the handle splits between the bands easier. Look at leaf springs on the back axle. Stacked on top of each other. Good on a spring, but for a tool, you would turn them 90° and they would be very stiff and very hard to break. When looking at the edge of the handle, you need to see thin lines close together. The side of the handle should be face grain.
I was down in Stradbally myself to set up a few stretch tents and doing a bit of sledging myself. Youve stuck a few double entendres in there. Respect. 😂
Best Irish channel and sound lad on UA-cam fact , the old tools keeping the knowledge going well worth watching just for that alone he's good lad knows what he's doing unlike most people just jump into things mess it up at least 4 or 5 times before they get good enough video to post ❤
Just a fyi ( i was a blacksmith for 20yrs) this is what you call a set hammer, the smith would set it ( place on the hot metal) and his striker ( assistant) would hit the back of the sledgehammer, this allowed heavy accurate blows to move large amounts off metal. This is why one side is mushroomed, you always have one good face that goes onto the job. I still have my grandfather’s set hammer
I know Eoin knows what he’s doing but seeing him pound the shaft into place above his feet while wearing soft shoes had me really concerned…i even tucked my own feet back involuntarily 😂
Some of your best work. This clip has got everything. Good on ya, lad! May you continue to line up sledges you've rehandled until they go clear down the drive!
I rehandled an ax from my youth last weekend. Truth be told I probably broke the previous handle out myself. But I did it because of your videos. Keep them coming
Damn he got the AF1 lows on, and in such a stunning color too. Yet he isn’t afraid to wear them. They’re shoes after all. That makes me genuinely happy.
Personally I like tung oil varnish. Rub it on with a soft cloth. It gives a little protection like varnish but it penetrates the grain as well and gives it a really beautiful natural look while not requiring maintenance like linseed oil.
I have a lovely scar on my hand from my saw slipping on a handle. We often had to put new handles onto our sledge hammers and the struggle of banging the hole off her brings back fond memories.
Because of this channel ive started puting handels on my grandfathers old broken equipment and the first one i did was a sledge hammer like this one. I used an old piece of oak that had been shaped into a cylinder and was use to hang clothing from but since we no longer needed it i used it as a handle since it was almost alrwady the perfect shape

Many people don't know about grain alignment on handles. I'm proud of you.
I'm one of those people. What's the secret with grain alignment on handles?
