- Thelma Lou Reminisces About Andy Griffith -
We have always known her as "Thelma Lou", Barney's girlfriend on The Andy Griffith Show.
Her real name is Betty Lynn and she was in 26 episodes of the show from 1961-1966.
In 2006 she moved from her home in West Hollywood to Mt. Airy, NC, the inspiration for Mayberry.
What a sweet gentle hearted and loving woman. She's the kind of person everyone would be blessed to have as a friend.
I think Andy and Betty Lynn have done a lot for Mt. Airy-- what a lovely soul she is!!
I tell you, there's no funnier scenes than Thelma Lou and Barney. I still watch The Andy Griffith Show and boy do I still roll with laughter. She's a jewel. One of my all time favorites.
I had a daddy that watched Andy and acted like Andy. I had great parents. Love you, Ms Betty and loved Thelma Lou!
Carolyn Roberson my dad is just like Andy and I think that’s why I always have loved the show🖤
Rest in peace, Betty. Thanks for entertaining us for so long
Now that made me shed a tear. What a wonderful tribute Betty! I bet Andy felt and thought the same about you too. God bless you!!
Betty Lynn said she isn't deserving of all of the love, but that's just not true. She is very deserving of it. She's a dear soul.
Still a beautiful person, inside and out.
"Dear soul" puts it perfectly.
My favorite scenes were when it was so obvious that Barney and Thelma Lou were making out. Barney had lipstick kisses all over his face and his hair was messed up..
Betty Clark I watch it at 8 am and 3 pm at 10 pm every week night I love u to
Oh yeah!! Thelma Lou sitting behind Andy's desk with her hands flat on the surface & that guilty look on her face ;-)
I wish I could tell Betty Lynn how great she was. She may have been lucky to get the Andy Griffith show but the Andy Griffith show was incredibly lucky to have her too. I wish she had been in more episodes. She was one of my absolute favorites and every episode with her in it are my favorites ones. She was beautiful, she had comic flare and was a good actress and she had a beautiful figure. Men loved her! And I did too. She's so modest. Once, in later years, she told the audience that she had had no acting training and maybe you could tell. She is wrong. She was a wonderful actress. She never made a false note and you loved her completely. She was like a bright sun. She had the most wonderful personality. But she also had some pepper in it too which i loved.
What a sweet woman is Betty Lynn! God bless her. RIP Andy and Don
Betty Lynn aka Thelma Lou, I grew up watching Andy Griffith and again when my mom was going thru the early stages until the last stages of Alzheimers I played reruns for her and what a welcome relief for us both, she would smile and laugh something I heard seldom and the only thing she said at that point was my dads name. Your cast was dearly loved by her and continues to be by me, Bless your heart and all of the people that made a contribution that truly touched so many lives for all time:)
She was so perfect as Thelma Lou. A very lovely lady. I watched Andy Griffith as a kid, and at 67 I am still watching reruns. They are just as funny as the first time.
The Andy Griffith Show will always remain timeless.
Love Andy Griffith show!!!
Love them all!!!.
Great interview..
You are still beautiful after all these years! Bless you Thelma Lou! 💕
Thank You Betty Lynn for your kind words about Andy Griffith. The show was always my favorite and I loved it and never tire of watching it. Yours was such a sweet character as Thelma Lou and what a great job you did! Thank You all for the great show that was and is a wonderful part of my life.
I'm almost 50 years old I remember running home from school just so I can see Andy Griffith and get my daily dose of Opie and still yet today I still find happiness in the reruns that still play today a time when people really cared about each other when life was simple even in my trouble times watching The Andy Griffith Show I'm able to smile and reflect on the memories
What a sweet woman, so humble and grateful for her life. Bless you, Betty "Thelma Lou" Lynn.
It is so refreshing to see a beautiful actress who hasn't had plastic surgery. I love you Betty Lynn. xx
Absolutely!
I'm so thankful that we can still watch this TV show. Every time I watch it, I'm awestruck with the talent that these marvelous actors had. She seems like a wonderfully sweet lady!

What a sweet wonderful woman, truly genuine person. Wish we had more actors and actresses just like her. She is a joy!!
I met her a couple of years ago at the Andy Griffith museum and she was the most humble and sweetest person I ever met
Thanks for the memories Betty Lynn. RIP Andy
I always really liked the character Thelma Lou because she was so sweet and gracious. Now I see that this was a natural extension of the actress Betty Lynn! Never her her interviews before. What a sweet lady!
It's so refreshing to see a tv celebrity that is also a decent human being. Hats off th you Betty Lynn. Hopefully Heaven may be a little like Mayberry. Even with "The Fun Girls".
This is such a beautiful, heartfelt interview. None of the posturing you see from so many celebs. She's just a beautiful person.
@Bella Bella no Barney married Thelma cause Barney moved to mount pilot to become a city detective
“Hello Doll”. Lol. What a hoot
@@bills5621 ok Bernie no it's Barney 😆
Hello doll
this is precisely what made thelma lou such a beautiful classy woman and character...as if she were playing herself.
Great interview. What a beautiful lady. It is nice to see celebrities that are genuinely good people.
What a sweet lady she is and loved her character as Thelma Lou. She really is genuinely sad over the passing of her friend.
52 and still watch this show every day and it always takes me back to a time when life was care free..
Watched Shows A Thousand Times ,Know All The Words ,Still Laugh ,Classic TV At It’s Best !!!
This woman reminds me of my Mom, shes been gone for a few years, kind of nice to hear the same sentiment.
I watch the Andy Griffith Show every night. I saw it way back when. It never gets old. And Thelma Lou was one of the best and consistent characters ever.
On of the best shows that ever aired on TV!
You can still feel the love coming from her ! A big heart! A big star that just loves to share her love with people ! Thank you for that dear ! Wish she could read all the comments posted ! She'd know that she is Loved very much too! Peace....
One of my favorite show, The Andy Griffith Show. Thank you to 'Thelma Lou' for sharing these wonderful memories. It means a lot to me.
Thank you, Betty. We watch Andy Griffith all of the time. 😃♥️ You’re a lovely lady. Your morals are excellent. I also wish those times never had to end. It’s a much different world now. 😥
Bless her heart. I've watched the show many many times over the years. Very common for me to stop on the show if I'm just channels surfing. Probably one of the most wholesome shows of all time that is very entertaining.
Betty Lynn/Thelma Lou still beautiful and gracious!
We met this lovely lady years ago when we went to Mt Airy, NC for Mayberry Days.....she was as sweet and down to earth as anyone I’ve ever met...she actually, as she said, lives up there in NC now.
Betty Lynn is such a precious woman. I just love her. 💞💞 she keeps the show alive for me.
This girl was beautiful on the show and is beautiful in heart. I still watch the show 👍.
There will never be a better show than this! I have it all on DVD but I still watch it on TV.
I still watch it over, and over.
I still watch the show .God bless Betty Lynn.
I grew up in the 1960s watching The Andy Griffith show, and I still watch it! I was thrilled to find it on MeTV. There is very little on TV today that I bother to watch, even on satellite TV.
what a classy, sweet and genuine lady. thxs for sharing this.
one of the many shows from the days when television was wholesome.
Except when Barney always be turnin off the lights when he alone with Thelma Lou!
I met Betty Lynn last year at a function I was performing at in Mt Airy last year and she was such a kind and genuine person. I truly hope I get the opportunity to speak with her again in the future.
My kids are 3 and 5 and we all love The Andy Griffith show. I watched it with my parents too.😍
What a beautiful person she is! I always loved, her character she seemed to have such a kindness to her. I could tell it was real.

jon wilson
I agree Jon, we all loved Thelma Lou!
thank you guys, I always love watching the show, it always takes me to a place where i would have loved to live in, there was an innocence in the characters and the town that we don't have and never will have in our time now, I know it was a TV show, nothing was real but I have the right to dream just like everybody else. As a grown man and a father I used to watch it with my kids and loved every show, I still watch it whenever I can. wish I could crawl into the show and stay there. Thank you so much.
Oh my what a wonderful piece. She seems like a nice lady. Mayberry will always be in my heart.
Betty Lynn, your Thelma Lou character, was a benchmark for what I looked for in a wife. I found her, and had a lifelong, 32 year marriage to her.
What an amazing Sweet Heart you are Betty Lynn. You still shine like the innocent Thelma Lou, a woman innocent and forgiving enough to love a knucklehead like Barney Fife. Beautiful tribute to Andy Griffith. Thank you.
Betty you are a wonderful, down to earth lady. As a writer (wont ever be a Poe or Hawthorne), I know a persons personality, everything that makes you you, shines through no matter what. We saw your true essence in your role as Thelma Lou and we all loved it. So yes, you deserve a lot.
You remind me of my own fiance-kind, sensitive, caring, able to put up with Barney Fife personality traits...lol.
God bless you. Hopefully I'll get to meet you one day :)
We love you dear, God bless. Thank you for the joy, memories and the love.
Love her! Love the show! I'm still watching it... it's my escape from all of the turmoil in our world today. For me, it calms me and makes me happy. I know that sounds crazy but it is true. I'm glad that she will know how much she is loved. God Bless you Betty!
I bought the AGS collection on dvd a few years back and my 3 daughters fell in love with the show. Now they watch I love Lucy, The Beverly Hill Billies and even gotten into old Movies just because of the charm and pure essence of it all.
it is amazing how Betty is so lucid and easy to communicate with at her age I think she is a remarkable lady
definitely we need more shows like The Andy Griffith show. Mayberry was such a simple town it's not a real place in the world that's like a place that everyone wishes there were a place like that. I watch the show every morning that I get the chance to. Everything good or bad comes to an end sometime or other. I hope they keep this show on forever.
aka Thelma Lue, it was you, Betty Lynn who brought her sweetness to the show, with your genuine love, we could see it through your persona, Your countenance you said it in your manor with the way you delivered your lines. Genuine love and compassion .
I take it your a child of GOD, born again. easy to see it. amen
We love you Betty Lynn...I love you with Barney on The Andy Griffith Show. You are such a sweet person.
Thanks Betty/Thelma Lou..for taking the time to spend time with us..you are the best..Thanks for posting..
A lovely person and great actress.
Thank you, thank you for this! What a lovely, sweet, darling person. She's still the sweet girl I loved watching in "June Bride", "Mother is a Freshman", and as Thema Lou. This was a treat.
Ginny Lorenz ~ You're welcome.
I live 45 minutes from her
I live 2 days and 45 minutes from her.
Me too.
I'm about 45 minutes away from her, too.. I'm in Greensboro. I met her a few years ago at Koury Convention Center and she kissed me on the cheek.
Thank you for sharing. I love the Andy Griffith Show and all the actors. :-)
I loved that show , watched it for years, Thanks Thelma Lou ! 😘
Oh my what a nice surprise Ms Lynn. Thank you for your words of understanding and enlightenment about Andy and of course the entire cast. We will all miss Andy and all the members of the Andy Griffith show.... all... everyone and especially you Thelma Lou!
Awesome loved the show still watch it
What an exceptional woman. And it seems nearly every regular cast on this iconic program was in real life the kind of fundamentally good person portrayed on it. So great a show it holds up very well today while nearly everything television produced around it back then is thoroughly dated. It's no wonder so many from the Andy Griffith Show see this work as their finest professional hour.
I love you Betty Lynn ❣❣ I have been to many Mayberry days parades. And love visiting Mount Airy anytime of the year. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. LOTS OF LOVE FROM RITA AND FAMILY IN MOORESVILLE NC
I watch Andy Griffith everyday. I have the shows on VHS and on CD. I pray that they don't take Andy Griffith show off the air. I WILL CRY LIKE A BABY. IT TRUELY IS A GREAT FAMILY SHOW WITH LIFE'S LESSONS. I will be watching and enjoying. And I am going to go to Mayberry days and see you Betty Lynn . Would love to have lunch at The Loaded Goat Restaurant with you Betty . 🌹🙏🔩❤❤❤💜💜💜🤗🤗❣❣❣
I remember the first time I saw Betty Lynn. She had a small part in "Cheaper By The Dozen" with Clifton Webb, Myna Loy and Jeanne Crain. She was delightful and so when I saw her in the "Andy Griffith Show" I was so happy! What a great show it was and still is :-) I Go to Mayberry when I get frazzled with the pressure of today's world and it always slows me down and lets me smell the flowers for a spell.
Also she has a great bit part as a babysitter in her very first movie called "Sitting Pretty" (1948). I believe it is posted here on UA-cam. Check her out -- you'll love it! Just as darling as ever (and funny!).
What a wonderful interview. Much love to you sweet lady! I saw you in the movies when you were just a girl.
I love Betty Lynn. She really is a sweet down to earth person just like her character, Thelma Lou.
We love you Ms. Lynn. Thank you for Thelma Lou.
beautiful lady with class!
What a very beautiful person Betty is. Thanks for all you have given us love u Thelma Lou.
God bless you Betty...thank you so very much for all the memories.
For some reason, I always knew she was my favorite on Andy Griffith. God bless you Thema Lou !
I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. Back in those days most of the tv shows were great, especially the life lessons that I learned from a very young age from watching shows like Andy Griffin. Now as an adult I still watch Andy Griffin. But I think how lucky Barney was to be with such a nice girl like Thelma Lou, what a Sweet Heart. Thank you so much.
back in 2002 i had the privilege to eat breakfast with betty lynn let me just say she is the most sweetest lady i have ever met we talked about the andy griffith show and she never got tired of answering questions. she just celebrated her 90 birthday. and to me she is still the cats.

Thank you ttheif for posting this! :) I just discovered this post of yours tonight while watching an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. I enjoyed seeing Betty Lynn again. Hearing her speak of Andy, Don and the show. She was a dearly loved character on the show as well. :) You could tell that she was really speaking from the heart! :)
I wish I could adopt her as my granny. What a loving sweet person .
She is such a precious soul I would love to meet her and just talk ❤️
Such a sweet lady. I love to watch the Andy Griffith shows with Thelma Lou.
I can watch it over and over again and never get tired of laughing.
very sweet interview, warm hearted and sincere, on the show, I always thought Andy was the philosopher, and Barney was his close friend and comic relief, I always look forward to watching the show when I'm home, a time when JFK was still president, the Beatles hadn't come to our shores yet, hair cut's at Floyd's Barber shop was 2 dollars and life, even though it had it's ups and downs, still had an innocence, that we'll never know again, unless we visit the town of Mayberry..
You were so beautiful back then and you still are
We were lucky to be a part of your life for many a birthday's and would have been honored to have met again after your 93rd. 🙏RIP at 95.😥
Best show ever produced. Betty you’re a class act and a wonderful human being. I wish you the best and I hope to meet you one day.
I always loved the Andy Griffith show and all the cast members ! I have several DVDs of the show !
Bless your heart Betty. You are such a sweet lady. I would love to meet you and talk with you. My wife and I was at that museum several years ago but you weren’t there
What a darling woman! Always loved the Thelma Lou and Barney episodes. Charming and touching and always funny. Betty Lynn, stay happy and well. You have fans everywhere.
