The game felt easy on the first playthrough with so many check points, but new game+ is almost completely unforgiving. And the checkpoint system can be bypassed for an extra challenge since you can destroy the checkpoints. I felt there was an abundance of money throughout the levels as well. I was able to buy almost all of the upgrades without doing extra levels on my first playthrough. IMO the game is a 9.5/10, maybe even a 9.9/10, with the only cons being creativity (however that should be looked passed since the game is a homage to old school platformers), and the difficulty of getting upgrades is easy. But every other con you can think of can be ignored by using different armor (gold plated armor makes you take double damage with no upside), neglecting to use and artifacts (game can be finished without them), destroying all check points (making and death send you back to the beginning of the level, no multiple tries like in other games), and not buying upgrades.
I wish people like Colin would stop praising the NES to death and acting like younger generations would be stupid to miss out on its library. There's nothing Mario 3 does that Mario U doesn't do better. This game looks interesting now i just have to decide whether or not to get it for wiiu or 3ds.
Just purchased this for my PS4 tonight and I am so glad I made that decision. Such an awesome game. They captured the old retro feel so perfectly, the game is filled with great characters, a good and simple storyline, and is just fun and relaxing to play. Brings back a lot of memories. Reminds me of the old Mega man and Kirby games.
i'm in my 30s, so i lived through the 8-, 16- and 64-bit (PS1, N64) eras. there have been extremely few games on any system that have gotten me to play again. i don't own a PS4, X-Box One, or Wii U, but Shovel Knight has brought me out of retirement! if you're a 30-something, cynical/skeptical non-gamer like me, i recommend Shovel Knight.

I’m 26, and I was too young to appreciate the SNES but used to play it at a friend’s house although I don’t remember much. N64 was my first console, but played tons of 2d platformers thanks to GB Color and Advance.

Wow, higher score than I expected! It's easy to understand why after watching this video and listening to Colin's thoughts. Definitely a real old school romp infused with proper gameplay improving advances that have been made over time since the NES days. The gameplay looks very tight and loads of fun, and I can't fathom why anyone would want to hate on this game. I can only assume that it's because of the graphics... ?
Cryengine They actually cheated, and it's not truly 8-bit. They added some colors to the normal 8-bit spectrum, and with the addition of parallax scrolling and some other visual effects and animation, this game looks objectively way better than any 8-bit or NES game ever did.
Brandon Graham Lol that's how I felt while playing it. NES never had sprites and landscapes this awesome. The only game that comes close to shovel knight graphically is mb mario bros 3. But you can't hate on it.. it's awesome to look at and the music is so catchy. I'm glad this got as much publicity as it did
During the beginning, i hated the difficulty, all i wanted was money, and i kept losing all of it and closing it before the level was over so that i didn't lose my money. Though, after a while, the gave forgave me and gave me luck to unlock the armory to get the red armor of the penny pinchers.
i'm absolutely baffled by the comments on this video... gamers these days are complete morons that only care about superficial bullshit. as long as a game looks nice, has lots of guns and explosions and isn't too hard/frustrating, it will be deemed "amazing" and "immersive" and, god forbid, "mature". people only want to get cutscenes shoved down their throats, yet most of them can't even tell how shitty the majority of video game stories are. i love it when a game tells a good, engaging story without sacrificing gameplay (or even better, tells its story THROUGH gameplay, like the last of us, for example), but can we please stop asking for story-driven games with super-duper-shader-resolution-mega-ultra-graphics? judge a game by how it PLAYS, not by its looks or amount of cutscenes. that's what games are about.

I agree with your comment for the most part, but I don't think cutscenes are inherently a bad thing by any means. For certain stories, it's important to see the character's faces and actions while they speak. To ensure this is done well, camera control is taken away from the player. It's just a different approach. And undoubtedly, having a story helps immerse you into the world your are in and give you a motivation to succeed. Even Shovel Knight has a story. It just expresses it in a way that best suits its style. Personally, I think Shovel Knight is a perfect game. I also think Metal Gear Solid 3 is a perfect game. There's more than one way to make a great interactive experience.
GlassMufasa i never said that i inherently dislike cutscenes - i love the MGS series, for example. i think they have the potential to be a lot more engaging than, say, the storytelling in half-life 2 (which is basically you standing still, listening to other people talk - that's not a good approach to telling a story in my opinion). so i actually agree with a lot of what you said. i simply feel that a lot of gamers aren't interested in gameplay and see it as an obstacle - they just want to get to the next story bit. i just can't understand that mindset and i'm really fed up with it. sorry if i haven't made this clear in my previous comment.
One of my favorite games of all time. Only thing I actually thought was a con was some of the enemies in the Plague Knight's stage were pretty goddamn annoying (the mice who's explosion is ridiculously difficult to avoid, the flying ones who just hound you so you can't hit them once they attack and they smack you down like 4 or 5 times)
Been playing games since I was 4. That was the tmnt 1989 and original zelda days on nes, we are so far and beyond what games were back then graphically but we need games like this as a reminder of how sweet gaming was then. Yeah you might of punched your friend in kindergarten because he lost your last life in a co op game on the last stage but that was the beauty of it. Blowing on cartridges till you turned blue, leaving your system on for days because you were close to the end just to have your mom turn it off because "she didn't know" somehow shovel knight captures all those feelings. I have beaten shovel knight and what they did with this game is better than most of the games I've recently played and especially the trash titles that were pushed out for a quick buck. Nostalgia has me worked up : )
i just traded in my 3ds XL to get the New 3ds XL and I got this game while I was at the store. Mannnn Shovel Knight is amazing!!! It looks soooo good with the 3d turned on. Music is great. Game play gave me that feeling I had as a kid when I first played Mega Man, Duck Tales and Metroid. A must bu y for 3ds owners!
Honestly, in 2016 shovel knight deserves a 10. The plague of Shadows dlc was amazing, it was also Free! Some more free dlc coming will be used for spectre knight, king knight, Body swap, and battlemode. All this for $15!
I got this game for Christmas with my 3DS XL 2 years ago and I played it a little but was more interested in the other games I got. I really started playing this recently and it is so addictive! I absolutely love it and can't believe I didn't play it sooner!
I have the money to buy both, but is it worth it? I mean, I really wanna play it on the Wii U but I want to play this game everywhere, with my 3DS. So, apart from the StreetPass thing and the thing of the Diary, are there any other differences between the Wii U and 3DS version? Like levels and all that stuff.
Maybe this is a given, but the 3DS version is in 3D. I know that the Wii U version is going to have a battle mode; I am very certain that Yacht Club Games said there will be no multiplayer for 3DS. I suggest taking a look at Shovel Knight's Kickstarter page for details.

Because apparently, if I can remember correctly they did say this; Yacht Club explain: “We love the rhythm of combat in Dark Souls, and the way you feel true fear at facing the unknown. The soul upgrading and death mechanics in that game are also refreshing and wonderful. That palpable tension that comes from fear of death!”
You just have to look at the enemy design for that. All the different colored knights that use shields and other weapons can be aggrivating to defeat, but really satisfying to kill. It almost reminds me of Zelda 2 actually.

A 9 out of 10 for shovel knight is the perfect rating, if you see it as what it is: a short, fast paced indie platformer thats originally made for handhelds. In terms of technics, looks, balancing and sound it's very well done. But of course, you can't compare this game to old nes or snes classics like bomberman, faxanadu or zelda II. Those games were Triple A titles back in the days made for big screen consoles.

Loving it so far. But I think there's a bug in the Treasure Knight battle because when I used the troupple ichor of invincibility and then got sucked into the treasure chest my character disappeared from the screen until I guess the invincibility wore off and I died.

I really love old school games and this game caught my interest but a 9/10 is still too much. The game may not have actual cons but it still lacks. I never played it so I could be heavily incorrect but based on his review: the game isnt perfect or that great for 9, no compliment about music, not an interstring story, nothing too original new, no interesting modes like speedrun mode, boss only or multiplayer co op. Not a big amount of deepth. I would give a perfect 8 and that would be still high!

He DID compliment the music... also, the story is not important when it comes to a game like this, it actually does have some surprisingly deep game mechanics, and you can't accuse a game of not having a random set of moves YOU choose. It does have a variety of modes though, like battle mode where you play as the bosses (will be released later as free DLC), a Challenge Mode, and New Gmae
This game will have everything you just mentioned except for (i'm not so sure on this) multiplayer on 3DS. The "original" gameplay mecanic in this game is the shovel, you get a bunch of extra items, and you can even play the game as different characters in the post game. This game's got a lot to offer, that's why I've been hyped for months now

You should take a look at Shovel Knight's Kickstarter page to see all the different modes that are going to be added due to stretch goals that were met. Yacht Club Games has stated that everything will be released eventually as free DLC; they just wanted to get the main game out first. Oh, and you should definitely play it. I've played a couple of levels and I love it so far.
I'm enjoying this game as much as Dark souls and Witcher 2. I don't understand why most games today such at making them challenging like they don't even try. Beating a game when I was a kid stood for something not just oh you had 10hrs+ to spare and sit through it while it practically played itself.
I disagree that the challenge in this game wasn't high enough. The challenge to me was perfect. Definitely hard without being frustrating. And man I wish more game creators would realize that you don't need cutting edge graphical capabilities to create a great game. I remember asking my brother after playing some Skyrim "if Skyrim was exactly the game it is right now but with graphics that look like Doom, would you care? Wouldn't it still be great?" For me it would be the same game. It's like comic books. We have artists and art techniques today that could make the artwork look photorealistic. But wouldn't that look stupid as all hell? We want it to look a certain way. And that way is not photorealism, for many people. But to each his own. Old school graphics are beautiful to me. As long as they have a good output resolution to make it look clean and crisp, the native resolution doesn't have to be top notch.

This game I just bought recently since it just came out for the PSN. Best part its cross buy, so I bought for PS4 but get it for PS3 and PS Vita and its cross save. So far its a fun game. Reminds me of the old NES games I played as a kid!
After seeing this review I'll definitely pick this up. Debating on getting this for my Wii U or just add it to my Steam library where I know I'll always have it. This and Child of Light, good stuff!

I have the money to buy both, but is it worth it? I mean, I really wanna play it on the Wii U but I want to play this game everywhere, with my 3DS. So, apart from the StreetPass thing and the thing of the Diary, are there any other differences between the Wii U and 3DS version? Like levels and all that stuff.
no but, the Wii U is getting a multiplayer mode with all the knights and some characters being playable with unique abilities and such.

Maybe this is a given, but the 3DS version is in 3D. I know that the Wii U version is going to have a battle mode; I am very certain that Yacht Club Games said there will be no multiplayer for 3DS. I suggest taking a look at Shovel Knight's Kickstarter page for details.

Is it just me, or does this have some inspiration from the souls game too? Because apparently, if I can remember correctly they did say this;

Perhaps they were inspired by Souls, but not directly.
You just have to look at the enemy design for that. All the different colored knights that use shields and other weapons can be aggrivating to defeat, but really satisfying to kill. It almost reminds me of Zelda 2 actually.

We are waiting for localization to come in and, once implemented, we'll send the game off for European certifications! Once we have a better handle on the timing of all this we'll let everyone know!

Shovel Knight isn't only inspired by 8bit platformers of olden days. It is better than them. That is where other retro platformers fail nowadays.

A 9 out of 10 for shovel knight is the perfect rating, if you see it as what it is: a short, fast paced indie platformer thats originally made for handhelds. In terms of technics, looks, balancing and sound it's very well done. But of course, you can't compare this game to old nes or snes classics like bomberman, faxanadu or zelda II. Those games were Triple A titles back in the days made for big screen consoles.
Zelda 2 is far from a triple a title in my opinion.
I love games like this. The last few games I played to completion were Hollow Knight, Momodora, Guacamelee, and Ori: Definitive Edition.

I have a problem. Why is it when I download something on my wii u, for example punch out, and then I go on my 3ds and try to download punch out it charges me? I thought if you have a Nintendo link ID you can share games with both the wii u and the 3ds?!?!.

Loving it so far. But I think there's a bug in the Treasure Knight battle because when I used the troupple ichor of invincibility and then got sucked into the treasure chest my character disappeared from the screen until I guess the invincibility wore off and I died.
No guns, blood, grimy, dirty character models, or ragdoll physics? ZERO STARS! WORST GAME EVER!

I really love old school games and this game caught my interest but a 9/10 is still too much. The game may not have actual cons but it still lacks. I never played it so I could be heavily incorrect but based on his review: the game isnt perfect or that great for 9, no compliment about music, not an interstring story, nothing too original new, no interesting modes like speedrun mode, boss only or multiplayer co op. Not a big amount of deepth. I would give a perfect 8 and that would be still high!

He DID compliment the music... also, the story is not important when it comes to a game like this, it actually does have some surprisingly deep game mechanics, and you can't accuse a game of not having a random set of moves YOU choose. It does have a variety of modes though, like battle mode where you play as the bosses (will be released later as free DLC), a Challenge Mode, and New Gmae

This game will have everything you just mentioned except for (i'm not so sure on this) multiplayer on 3DS. The "original" gameplay mecanic in this game is the shovel, you get a bunch of extra items, and you can even play the game as different characters in the post game. This game's got a lot to offer, that's why I've been hyped for months now
Did you actually watch the review? He said he loved the music. But, if you want a more in depth analysis of the game there is always the written version of Colin's review on IGN's site.
You should take a look at Shovel Knight's Kickstarter page to see all the different modes that are going to be added due to stretch goals that were met. Yacht Club Games has stated that everything will be released eventually as free DLC; they just wanted to get the main game out first. Oh, and you should definitely play it. I've played a couple of levels and I love it so far.

I'm enjoying this game as much as Dark souls and Witcher 2. I don't understand why most games today such at making them challenging like they don't even try. Beating a game when I was a kid stood for something not just oh you had 10hrs+ to spare and sit through it while it practically played itself.

I disagree that the challenge in this game wasn't high enough. The challenge to me was perfect. Definitely hard without being frustrating. And man I wish more game creators would realize that you don't need cutting edge graphical capabilities to create a great game. I remember asking my brother after playing some Skyrim "if Skyrim was exactly the game it is right now but with graphics that look like Doom, would you care? Wouldn't it still be great?" For me it would be the same game. It's like comic books. We have artists and art techniques today that could make the artwork look photorealistic. But wouldn't that look stupid as all hell? We want it to look a certain way. And that way is not photorealism, for many people. But to each his own. Old school graphics are beautiful to me. As long as they have a good output resolution to make it look clean and crisp, the native resolution doesn't have to be top notch.

This game I just bought recently since it just came out for the PSN. Best part its cross buy, so I bought for PS4 but get it for PS3 and PS Vita and its cross save. So far its a fun game. Reminds me of the old NES games I played as a kid!
