You can easily make a sessionable Manhattan by reversing the specs of a classic Manhattan but it results in a fairly sweet cocktail that lacks complexity. This is where sherry and vermouth step in to fill the gap.
Amontillado sherry typically has nutty characteristics whilst dry vermouth displays grape, citrus and herbaceous notes. Adding both of these ingredients bring more character and depth to this low-ABV version of the classic Manhattan.
Sherry and vermouth are both versatile and inexpensive ingredients so I strongly recommend having them on your back bar (*ahem* fridge).
If you are looking for more ways to use both these bottles then you can’t go past a Sherry Cobbler, Clover Club or a Dry Martini.

Steve - this is a hell of a drink! I tried it just now and it was delicious. I used Carpano Antica Formula and Noilly Prat Original Dry (the OGs), and they blend so well with the amontillado and rye. Recognisably a Manhattan, full of complexity, but with a bit less abv. Definitely adding this to my repertoire. Cheers!

Love this! As I age, I can't roll like I used to and frankly don't have any desire to do so- so sessionable? Oh my yes! I've been cutting back on the alc content for a while now in my cocktails, although an occasional dram of whiskey as a night cap has its place. Even in beer I'm finding myself looking for the lower ABV options more often. So glad you made this vid- hope to see the subject matter more often!

Due enjoy Reverse Manhattans as well as Manhattans over ice to lengthen the experience. The tweak with sherry do point at the vermouth can bring great flavours and can be boosted with fortified wines.

It does make me giggle a little bit how the low abv options has a couple of alcoholic ingredients with the shortest shelf life 😂 (I do understand it's because of the low abv and fortified things blah blah lol) but this will be fab if we have some people around who are taking it easy 🥰 Would love to see more low abv drinks that are actually fun to drink

Thanks for this. I'm on the lookout for low alcohol cocktails since I'm in the unfortunate position of having a health condition that is triggered by alcohol. I'm actually more interested in total alcohol than ABV. Using the ingredients I have on hand, this one comes in at about 23ml of alcohol. While somewhat higher than something like a Amalienb (at 17ml) it was a very enjoyable drink. Hoping you will post more low alcohol cocktails.

I've done almost an identical drink, but with slightly different proportions. Less sweet vermouth and more sherry. I've also done it with tawny port, which I really like. I didn't know what to call it, though! I also usually add just a bit of orange bitters.
