The best Dax instructor ever! I've watched a lot of videos about DAX, including videos from DAX gurus and I can affirm this video is the best of all. Hard concepts are made easy to understand with clear examples, very good teaching technique. Kudos to the instructor!
After watching dozens of videos in english, portuguese, on youtube and paid classes, trying to understand how row context, filter context and CALCULATE function works, I finally could comprehend that concept by watching this video. It's so simple that I still don't believe it. Thanks @PragmaticWorks for this video.
I find tutorial videos from Pragmatic Works are simply the best! As someone who recently started working with Power BI regularly, it was good to come back to the basics in order to understand why i made those DAX mistakes I made and how to correct those and prevent them from happening again. I also watched the series from Pragmatic Works on Data Modeling- highly recommend it!
Wonderful session on Dax...! Those who want to be clear about the basic idea of the Dax with some used case.... please do watch this! Related Table 00:32:00 Switch 00:36:05 Calculate 00:49:20
So, I have watched many Power BI / DAX tutorials, but yours is the tops! Sam McKay at Enterprise DNA is very good, but the way you describe how and why to do things and how measures works is just the best. I was one of the ones who always created a separate table/group for Key Measures, but your method of creating a folder for each table and putting the measures in the table outside the folder is brilliant and a lot more intuitive, since many times you're also using other fields from that table with the calculated measure. Just a superb course - thank you so much for this!!
One thing I know, you can never go wrong with Pragmatic Works. I have been following you guys as a go-to when it comes to BI or now-Cloud BI for last 10 years, everything you guys do to stay ahead of the what's coming next in technology, your free resources, power-packed webinars - are truly marvelous.
This DAX video is a masterpiece! I've learn't so much from this. I like how the course is broken down into segments and you explain what each measure is doing and how it does it. I have been available to comfortably follow the recording, and do the columns and measures myself, without having to pause or rewind to listen again. Please keep these coming! Thank you
Such a great course!! Impressed by how 3 hours went by, received so much information and yet, not feeling overwhelmed because everything was so well explained.
there are a lot of DAX experts online but not everyone can explain/teach clearly, or in a way thats easy for people to follow, amazing , thanks for the video
Absolutely amazing 3 hrs. course, as many of you I come from the SQL world so DAX has always be confusing; this course cleared so many questions. Kudos to Mitchel Pearson for an extraordinary compilation of knowledge! Thank you so much, keep up the excellent work.
The first time that I viewed this, I learned some stuff, all of it new. The second time that I viewed this, I understood the rest. In both cases, I turned the speed down to .75 in order to keep up. The third time that I will view this, I will probably turn the speed back to 1.00. In any case, the material is sinking in. Thank you, Mitchell. I Look forward to seeing much more of your content. 👍
Thank you, for me this it was the best DAX presentation, I am preparing the DA-100 exam and now I am confidence with DAX part for my Certification of PowerBI
Excellent class! You were so easy to understand, although I have been working in PowerBI for a while now, so I'm sure that helped. But, I know I needed more understanding of DAX and you're helping me get there. Thank you so much!
wow! This is the best video on DAX/PowerBI I have come across. Been working with PowerBI 5 years but this clears up so many concepts in one go. Not sure why this is considered intro :) This really is PowerBI start to finish!
Thank you for an excellent course. The pace at which you explained things was perfect, without any unnecessary repetitive statements. Examples were excellent, although I am using it for engineering data and not business related, I could relate your exams to my specific type of data.
I just have to leave a comment! This is the best DAX tutorial I have seen. I didn't expect that I'd be fully understanding of the concepts at the end of the day, and I did!! Thanks so much for the awesome explanation and demonstration.
Richard, I have to say that you are a great teacher, you explain concepts that could be difficult to understand in a clear and understandable way. You are very didactic and I learn a lot from your teachings.
Wow, cannot thank you enough for putting this course out there, and for free. Pragmatic is definitely the best when it comes to learning Power BI. THANK YOU!
The course has been taught at the right pace and the resources provided has given it a perfect hands-on training experience. Thank you so much Mitchell!!! Really appreciate the time you have taken for this. looking forward for your other courses and advanced DAX workshop.
I was totally new to Dax and besides the interesting things I learned from you, I got the kind of excitement that you have about Dax, like you have transferred your excitement to me as well and now I am eager to learn more and more about it. Thanks
I can't be more thankful enough. I have been looking for something to practice what I had learnt from the DAX book and a few courses I have done previously. But it's all too complicated if you don't have examples to practice on. This video does just that, it gives me examples to work with. I know a lot of this stuff but I am never confident when it comes to applying these concepts so this is where this tutorial comes in handy. You need to have initial background but after that, if you have to gain mastery you need practice and this is THE best video I have found for practicing. Kudos! You are doing some really awesome work!💕
I read "Learn to Write DAX" of Matt Allington, and this video definitely consolidates my takes on the book. The concepts become much easier to understand when you start with Calculated Column and Row Context first.
Thank you so much for this! I learned more from it than I did from a two-day course I attended at work. Your presentation was easy to follow and I loved the practical examples. Can't wait to learn more!
What a great educational presentation! Thank you Mitchell for sharing your knowledge and making it easy to follow and understand . Your presentation was very much appreciated! Recommending it to all Power BI enthusiasts I know.
As of today I’ve watched the first 45 minutes (calculated columns) about 6 times. Haven’t even gone further yet. After watching it each time I’ve gone back and played around with some of my own data and each time I have a bit of Eureka moment. Nowhere close to being DAX proficient yet, but if anyone is struggling to make sense of what Mitch is saying, keep persevering. It’s starting to make a bit of sense.
Did Dashboard in a Day with Pragmatic a couple of years ago. Really good day. But this tutorial was great and explanations terrific. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of Power BI
Thank you very much Mitchel & Pragmatic Works for this amazing course. -Great examples (real world examples). -Great explanation. What a teacher! He shows experience and ability to explain. In the 99th percentile of the best tutorials I've seen on UA-cam. Coming from a Tableau user, I have to say that this video is GOLD. It's hard to find such a good explanation for a 'Filter Context' and all concepts in Time Inteligence (YTD Measures, Prior YTD Measures, etc). So again, Thank you!
Richard, great job with breaking down the concepts - I've been using Power BI and DAX and took this course as a refresher but I definitely learned SO MUCH MORE, I appreciate how you break down the concepts into manageable chunks and gave great examples as well :)
I just cant hold back my appreciation to you guys. You are just awesome. Thank you for all the effort you put into your tutorials. This was really masterpiece.....:)
This is great. Finally understanding that the aggregate roll up of data is added to the DIMENSION tables using the navigation functions. I was missing that part. Thank you!
Great video and crystal clear breakdown! I believe for many people, Power Bi and DAX is something we learn by ourselves (with trail and ALOT of errors) . I really enjoyed this class.
really enjoyed this tutorial, I finally know more about DAX now, it is bit hard to grasp initially but as I follow along all the examples and explanations, its not that hard to understand what was happening in the background.
Richard, WOW some of the best teaching of a challenging topic I have ever seen. I'll be signing up for the boot camp as I have really enjoyed watching the 3 hours.
Thank you very much for this course. I have learned so much. The explanation is very clear and precised. This will help me to understand DAX functions better. Please how can I access the exercise files?
Very clear and concise explanations. I'm just starting out with Power BI and watching this boosted my understanding significantly. My models and reports are already improving. Thank you!
Wait wait wait...who is this DAX superstar now, this is very impressive, this commands subscription for sure. Thanks man, I'm gonna follow in your footsteps, there's great value here. Sorry I had to pause the video, subscribe, like and comment....Bravo!!!!!!!!!
really useful!!! I learned power bi from my last job, it was all a practical thing but no idea about basics and how it works. I learned many ways to let the work more efficient and processing time getting shorter. why not I did not check this video earlier??!?!?!?!
Hello! I'm quite having a difficult time understanding DAX, but your explanations gave me a whole new ball game and understanding. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Amazing! Thank you so much for the professional workshop Do favor to me please I need the Source Excel file because when I tried to connect to the power query an issue has occurred
Chuck Norris can divide by zero !!! Hell yeah ! Great Video by the way, I wish I had seen this 12 months ago ! Will recommend to colleagues beginning their DAX journey.
hi Shuchi, hope you are keeping well.. i am really struggling with the data source, did you manage to find one ?.. if yes , could you please share data source on juneja.priya91@gmail.com .. TIA :)
I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for your explanation. Your insightful and articulate approach not only made the complex subject matter more accessible but also sparked a newfound understanding and curiosity within me. I wanted to learn DAX since many months and watched many videos but was not satisfied with them. This video made me understand, so well, thank you so much. I sometimes subscribe or like videos, but this is the first time I have commented on a video, what an explanation 👋👌💯
Love this Video very new to PowerBI and DAX coming from a python background so it was hard to wrap my head around how filters did not have to specified in the calc if the measure was made outside of the column and a relationship between tables existed. I ended up changing a lot of my code to just use a simple Calculate( (total) , filter) expression instead of SUMX, if logic etc 😅
Hey guys, I just completed this workshop, and it was fantastic. Thanks so much Mitchel. What would you recommend as a pathway beyond this workshop? I've been doing Power BI for around 1 year, but hadn't done a massive amount of DAX until doing this workshop. It was pitched at exactly the right level for me. Challenging, but still followable.
The examples, methodlogy and all the preparation you have made for sharing your knowledge is really fantastic!! Thanks a lot for you easy to understand DAX knowlegde!! Muchas muchas gracias!!! Carlos
I wish I had found this video years ago. You explain everything so well - thank you very much for making such an excellent source of information available
I think you have really good teaching style. Cool under pressure like when the power BI froze on you. I have learned heaps watching this. Thank YOU for sharing 🙂
For CALENDAR function I am creating dynamic calendar, where I input just start date. End date is calculated. It's CALENDAR ( DATE (2016, 1, 1), TODAY() + 365 ) Works well. Like Stinger. Launch and forget :D
You are simply great! I am a super user of PBI, yet I was counting a lot on Excel to prepare the datasets before exporting them to PBI. Now I can skip off such transitory phase (which needs double efforts and may cause some discrepancies) and make everything inside PBI. Really appreciated 🎉🎉
This video brought my skill to next level (from very beginner). The design process based presentation was really helpful to understand how the expert does it from the scratch. (I only learned PBI from UA-cam). I liked related and relatedtable explanation (the answer to why I couldn’t find a column from another table when creating a nee column. 1 question for the key in every table. I see you created an index kind of key for all table. I normally use one of columns that is unique. What is the benefit of creating the key with the index?
Hi Tomoya, I'm so glad you enjoyed the vide and it was helpful. The index key or unique key is created and maintained in the data warehouse. If you're not pulling data from a data warehouse that is being maintained, then you would not have that key and that's ok. There are many benefits to having this unique identifier. For example, the key would be guaranteed to be unique. The key will generally be a numeric value which can save on storage. Also, having a separate unrelated key can allow for more complex scenarios when building dimensional models. However, keep in mind, if you don't have the key column but you do have a unique column in your table that you can use, that is fine!
@@PragmaticWorks thanks for the advice. I think it maybe related normalization that is mentioned in On demand training. (I just signed up and just going thru the module : )

I don't know how to appreciate it. Your are doing great job for Power BI Developers.
Your videos has to be the top 3 most clear conceptual videos explaining Dax in this world. Has helped me a lot!
Glad you like them!
And what are the other two???
really enjoyed this tutorial, I finally know more about DAX now, it is bit hard to grasp initially but as I follow along all the examples and explanations, its not that hard to understand what was happening in the background.
That's awesome Kate, super glad it helped and thanks for commenting! -Mitchell Pearson
Mitchell is the best at explaining with supporting examples very advanced concepts in very simple words.
Richard, WOW some of the best teaching of a challenging topic I have ever seen. I'll be signing up for the boot camp as I have really enjoyed watching the 3 hours.
very DAX fluent teacher. Great video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Thank you!
Great to hear!
Simply amazing. What an incredible session. And you should do an entire UA-cam series on Optional Parameters in DAX!
Thanks so much.
Thank you Apoorv, I did a short video here on optional parameters: ua-cam.com/video/JeWNHIQpFCs/v-deo.html
Wait wait wait...who is this DAX superstar now, this is very impressive, this commands subscription for sure. Thanks man, I'm gonna follow in your footsteps, there's great value here. Sorry I had to pause the video, subscribe, like and comment....Bravo!!!!!!!!!
This is great feedback, thank you so much and I'm glad you enjoy our content. - Mitchell Pearson
really useful!!! I learned power bi from my last job, it was all a practical thing but no idea about basics and how it works. I learned many ways to let the work more efficient and processing time getting shorter. why not I did not check this video earlier??!?!?!?!
I was not expecting to find such a detailed presentation in the internet. Great tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you Mitchell for explaining DAX so intuitively. You helped me get a good grip on DAX functions.
better explanation than some paid courses.👍
Thank you! Glad to help :)
This is a masterpice! All core topics of DAX clearly explained!
Superb. Exactly what I wanted out of the tutorial.. 3 hours well spent
Glad it helped!
Hello! I'm quite having a difficult time understanding DAX, but your explanations gave me a whole new ball game and understanding. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Amazing!
Thank you so much for the professional workshop
Do favor to me please
I need the Source Excel file because when I tried to connect to the power query an issue has occurred
This has been the most informative lesson on DAX I have ever had. After this I'm redoing my current reports from scratch lol. Great stuff
Chuck Norris can divide by zero !!! Hell yeah ! Great Video by the way, I wish I had seen this 12 months ago ! Will recommend to colleagues beginning their DAX journey.
Haha, thanks "Website Analytics" glad you enjoyed the video.
Just started watching the video and everything has been explained amazingly.
Was wondering if the data files are available to download
Hey Shuchi, sorry you were unable to find the files, they are in the description of the video, I have provided the link here: tinyurl.com/daxevent
@@PragmaticWorks thanks
hi Shuchi, hope you are keeping well.. i am really struggling with the data source, did you manage to find one ?.. if yes , could you please share data source on juneja.priya91@gmail.com .. TIA :)
Excellent session. Kept me engaged for the entire workshop
Glad you enjoyed it!
This training is the absolute best. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching! :)
Thank you so much for such detail explanation and for driving home logic behind code in DAX. I really appreciate these 3 hours. Time well spent.
You're very welcome!
Love this Video very new to PowerBI and DAX coming from a python background so it was hard to wrap my head around how filters did not have to specified in the calc if the measure was made outside of the column and a relationship between tables existed.
I ended up changing a lot of my code to just use a simple Calculate( (total) , filter) expression instead of SUMX, if logic etc
😅
Hey guys, I just completed this workshop, and it was fantastic. Thanks so much Mitchel. What would you recommend as a pathway beyond this workshop? I've been doing Power BI for around 1 year, but hadn't done a massive amount of DAX until doing this workshop. It was pitched at exactly the right level for me. Challenging, but still followable.
The examples, methodlogy and all the preparation you have made for sharing your knowledge is really fantastic!!
Thanks a lot for you easy to understand DAX knowlegde!!
Muchas muchas gracias!!!
Carlos
You're very welcome!
Excellent Presentation, I will practice all these Dax expressions
Thanks Clara, have fun!
I need to thank you for the awesome work you have done. This was by far the best DAX course i ever seen ! Thank you !
Thanks Denner, very happy you found this video to be helpful!
Amazing, followed the whole 3 hour video! Awesome, right level of difficulty and content for an intro video
I wish I had found this video years ago. You explain everything so well - thank you very much for making such an excellent source of information available
I think you have really good teaching style. Cool under pressure like when the power BI froze on you. I have learned heaps watching this. Thank YOU for sharing 🙂
Glad to help
For CALENDAR function I am creating dynamic calendar, where I input just start date. End date is calculated. It's CALENDAR ( DATE (2016, 1, 1), TODAY() + 365 ) Works well. Like Stinger. Launch and forget :D
never seen someone explaining so clearly. amazing, thank you!
Awesome, thank you! - Mitchell
Wow this is an amazing training. I am new in Power Bi and have found this the most helpful DAX training
Automagically... love it. This has been a phenomenal training!
Thanks Jamie! Glad you enjoyed the training!
Hi Tomoya,
I'm so glad you enjoyed the vide and it was helpful.
