    No doubt I made some mistakes on that stalk but it was awesome to get so close to such a beautiful buck. Thankful for the opportunity to share this hunt with you all!

      The whole time I am sitting here saying look at the stuff on the left then you spotted him before he saw you I was rooting for you to back up and move left to get a shot thru the backside opening great stalk though either way

      @@elizabeth_williams I stared at all of the stuff on the left for 10+ minutes looking for movement. The buck was so buried. Hindsight, I would approach from that side of the island

    I was in this exact situation a few years ago. 3 yards from a bedded buck in cattails. When he finally got up he had seen me and bolted. I concluded that should I ever get another stalking opportunity like that again I was going to fill my pockets full of rocks. That way I could try and get him to stand from a noise coming from the opposite direction as my location. Stalks like that are soooo tough to pull off. Hope you can get it done next time though. It’s a killer skill to develop!

    Good example of why making a noise to get a buck’s attention is a bad idea. THP says it all the time. Should’ve just had a little more patience, bucks stand and adjust themselves in the bed every hour or so.

      Spot on! Didn’t expect him to be there and I got a bad swirl of wind right as I saw him. He ended up smelling me but I don’t think he ever saw me. I was up to my chest in grass and had a good backdrop. Was such a cool hunt either way. Wish I wouldn’t have lost track of him and saw him bed. Would’ve sat back and waited then

      a lesson learn..if you're gonna wait for that ethical shot..a big buck like that who is staring right at you is not gonna provide it for you..he is just gonna take off. u can do alot of damaged to a deer while they are bedded n being up that close..speaking from my own personal experiences..I have never lost a deer compared to those ethical broadside shots that we all wait for lol

  • @robertwilliamson6958
    @robertwilliamson6958 10 місяців тому +2

    Tough situation! Still hunting makes everything whitetails more difficult. If you want to know exactly how high you hit, and you know it’s 32 yards was how far the deer actually was, just aim at a target 32 yards away the same way you did when you shot the buck if you haven’t already and you’ll know for sure. Plus the deer was alert ish, it could have increased the height of the hit further still. Nothing wrong with how that situation went down. If you hunt enough and hard enough you’ll end up in that situation as a bowhunter.

    hey Rick, I wasn't there so I don't know what The lay of the land was It always looks different on camera, but I was just kind of wondering why you didn't try to get on your hands and knees and creep up to them deer I know I would've and I'm 6'4" 250 I have gotten within 5 to 10 yards of deer on a windy day and actually killed a few in that condition. every situation is different and more times than not you get busted but every now and then it works.
    The difference is, I don't have a UA-cam channel so I don't need to get it on camera you do so I understand

      @@Diffidentone I shot a buck I named splash because I was hunting a ridge and flooded creek bottom. Had a rut frenzy going on splashing through the water I shot what I thought was the biggest buck grazed the back of his neck and knocked him out and he splashed and fell under water. When I gutted him his lungs were full of water he drowned and had there not been 2 feet of water I could lost him.

      @@JimBowSlice I knew someone that shot a buck and they had buck fever so bad they shot it in the antler well the impact knocked the buck out. He went up and poked it with his gun barrel as he should but since it was knocked out it did not react and he thought it was dead. So he leaned his rifle up against the buck and went to pick up the head and the buck woke up and in the process hooked it's antler around his gun sling, got up and ran off with his gun hanging from it's rack. Luckily it fell off about 100 yards away and he recovered the gun. If I'm not mistaken he even attached his tag to the antler so the buck was running around with his tag on it.

      @@Diffidentone wow that's a pretty crazy one. I just remembered another crazy one from my grandpa in the 50s. He was checking on his cattle and in the pasture there was a nice buck with a doe so he shot it out of truck, not the point of this story as it was common place for farmers back then. So he dropped it with a neck shot drove over there threw it in the truck and took it to the barn and hung it up. I guess it only took a few minutes but the deer Un gutted hanging from its back legs wakes up and starts going crazy he had to kill it with a ball pien hammer. I still have the skull today and it's skull had a ball pien hole in it. Pretty wild. And now I have thought of another one, my brother's fist buck had been shot before he got it and they tried to head shoot it and blew the bottom jaw off. He killed 2 miles and an hour later from where that happen. Makes me think twice for sure
