こんにちは! Fleet Histories is a series where we take a look at the operational history of aircraft fleets both active and retired. Passenger airliners are normally featured, although freighter and government aircraft will be covered occasionally. This series was inspired by the videos of elmauriplatense, Ibirdball, Scaring Crab, and many other aviation UA-camrs.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) was the first Japanese operator of the Boeing 737, having introduced the type in 1969 to supplement their 727s on domestic routes. In 1971, they became the launch customer of the 737-200 Advanced, which was an upgraded version of the early 737-200. ANA later introduced the upgraded 737-500 variant in 1995 through their subsidiary Air Nippon. The -500 was almost the same length as the -200 and incorporated parts and equipment from the 737 Classic series. The type was nicknamed "Super Dolphin" by the airline's employees for its appearance and handling, hence the dolphin painted on the engines. It served with ANA and its subsidiaries before being retired on July 14, 2020. One aircraft is preserved for maintenance training.
