Hello friends,
Welcome back to Swiftlessons for another lead guitar tutorial. In today's session I'm beginning a series breaking down guitar soloing techniques over common chord progressions, starting with the 1.6.4.5 in G major. We'll begin our lesson by reviewing our major pentatonic scale positions and how visualizing chord shapes can reveal melodic possibilities. With those prerequisites covered, you will be able to learn each lick in this solo with confidence and apply each concept to your own playing. Let's get started!

This video qualifies as a "diamond" resource for a intermediate / self-taught learner! Thanks you!
For anyone at any "level" We do not all learn the exact same stuff at the exact same time..
Finally a video lesson that doesn't monologue and then never explain. You get right to it. By far the calmest, clearest tutorials I've seen. Im having an epiphany moment.
Thank you. I subscribed and look forward to more of your videos
Congrats on the progress Dave! Thanks for reaching out and sharing such positive feedback. Plenty more lessons are in the works. Be sure to check me out at Patreon.com/Swiftlessons as well for more content. Take care. -Rob
Thanks for the cogent lesson. Timing in soloing is my biggest challenge and seeing the chord shapes ahead of time to plan moves. This was tremendously helpful. Tasty licks. And, I have been playing for 50 years! Never stop learning...............
Never stop learning.
You don't have to make a solo on the spot it doesn't gave to be impulsive
Loved how you explained your reasoning by showing the chords so we can apply it to other shapes! Thank you :)
Thank you so much . I've never had a guitar/music teacher, and your lessons got me to the point of making a song.
I've been playing for 4 years now and your lessons are gold for me.
Much love
Thank you so much for this. I have watched many youtube lessons on this subject. This is by far and away the best. Your teaching style really works for me. Simple but clear explanations. It has transformed my understanding and playing. Best wishes from Worcester UK
Thank you Rob.Only ever video on soloing by signalling the chord changes, incorporating the timing/rhythm structure.Innumerable videos on soloing in blues(swinging eights) but even those videos do not break down the changes like you did.Soloing in timing other than swinging eighths is far more daunting.Going to analyse this solo in 6/8.Would also appreciate a solo in simple 4/4,breaking down chord changes as you did in this one.My abject apology for lengthy explanation.Thank you.
You are an incredible teacher. This video has upped my guitar game.
Just great solo...maybe one day for me. Thanks Rob for this special moment 🎶🎶🎶
What a wealth of information for any level player!
Oh man...this is holy grail for solo!!!!! Super thank man!!!!
Great lesson. Make it easy to understand using chord shapes when soloing.👍
That is a very cool and timely lesson for my playing! Thank you! That sound you are sharing from your fingers and that Spark is very sweet! Thanks!
One of the best demonstration of the Caged system and how it works. Thankyou friend.
Like it alot. Clearly see how we can solo over the chords. So much different from playing just riffs but don t know how to apply. Thanks a lot. You are a great teacher:)
Great job explaining the way you break it down..
Wow Dude, killer lesson! I don't anyone ever really took all that trouble of taking the beginner by the hand like this. You can start a revolution with this.
This is beautiful music, explained by a great teacher. Thank you mate. Awesome job. Fun to play.
Finally I find someone that I can lean on to build my skills
Fantastic blues lesson, easy to follow & brings lots of skills together.
Hey colinsibthorpe, happy to be of help. Thanks for reaching out and sharing such positive feedback, please share when you have a chance. -Rob
Fkn love your teaching style man. Class act
That's the first solo I'm learning ever. I'm excited 😂. Thank you so much
Big thanks to you for these so common and beautiful double stops I have been looking for months. The first D G, with E as an ornament (so G, I, chord or E-7, Vi), G form F. The second A D with B as an ornament (so D, V, chord or B-7, III), D form D. Two case lower you can repeat the second pattern for C, iV, or A-7, II, C form D. Except for the Vii degree, we have all degrees here ! Brilliant, I play piano but now I think I prefer guitar, folk, electric. Those bendings, hammer, pull-off, vibrato, glissando both ways are so tasty.
I finally get it, what it needs to solo 🙌
Great lesson, I'm very much obliged. You make things that are unreachable easy to understand and play. Thank you so much!
Excellent lesson! Subscribed.

Thank you so much for that lesson ! It seems now to me more simple, not trying to play as an exercise...but simply playing guitar with fun! And Michael Craig, I agree with you! Hello to everybody from France!🤗😉

clearly explaination beautiful thank you sooooo Much. you are the best thanks for sharing.
Well done for the intermediate player. Very tasteful and great use of approachable Hendrix/R&B double stops. I was looking for some ideas over common chord progressions for practice ideas. Thank you. (If you’re looking for ideas, would enjoy even a simple I-IV vamp.) Cheers
This is cool thanks. Do you got some more like this, that actually shows a guitarist about playing notes with the chords.. So many different ones and also the way most guitarists try to learn, someone always says "play the scales and the right notes to stay in key", but this is something that almost no one really teaches how to do this. So a lot of players know scales and chords, but when they try and play to the chords it sounds like an exercise, not a song. So how to get past that situation?
Playing notes with the chords in theory is easy. For example a Emin chord is spelled E, G, B. There are your chord tones. You can get crazy advanced but keeping it basic you can just come up with licks and runs based around and anchored off of those notes. Almost like a pedal tone. Because the SOLOIST actually dictates the feel or emotion the most. The rhythm usually just vamp, well, a rhythm. While it creates atmosphere and the very foundation it is the tension and release that allow you to play with listeners' emotions. Now we're talking modes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Another thing real quick that's important is:
The reason it sounds like you're just playing chords is because you are! We are introduced to these scales in boxes and patterns that relate to chords so you can apply it to what you know already. Once you learn that, now you have to unlearn it so that you look at the board as intervals and scales. Essentially by learning scales as chord shapes once again you're really just learning chords. You're not teaching yourself to see the fretboard modally/melodically. Another problem area of my playing.
Really great lessons thank you ,you are very easy to follow 🙏
Great lesson! Thank you Rob!

Hey Juan, I really appreciate you taking the time to share some positive feedback. Thanks so much, enjoy your day of practice! -Rob
Congrats.
Jimmy Page said he doesn't think of scales when he solos. He thinks of chord shapes. This shows how important learning the caged system is. You're one smart cat.
PEACE from Philadelphia
That’s why Page’s solos are so minimalist and sometimes predecible, because it’s always the same shape and kind of a comfort zone but if you look at Rory Gallagher or Ritchie Blackmore.. they are always thinking in scales, even the most simple ones, that’s why they can move up down the neck and always find different melodies.... Caged system is important yes... but only you can do great solos with the cages system if you are BB King. It’s also important to get out the caged system and think about scales to find different colours in the notes.
@@voxy1062 Right on. Write on !!
PEACE from Philadelphia.
I thought you only sing and basic chords.. You're really good blues teacher..
He teaches jazz too!
Absolut Top Mann Great Sound great Big Big Blues Mann Top Guitarhero I think one on the Top in UA-cam!Thanks you spend your Time vor us Thank you!!!👍👍👍👍💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing!
Awesome
I call the pentatonic scale upper add-on "Home Plate" because its shaped like a home plate in baseball. Once I realized that, I never forgot it.
Yeah, those types of pneumonic devices are extremely helpful for mapping out the fretboard. I like the home plate idea!
Nice .
Holy grail
are you playing with finger plus pick this is awesome
