It was wonderful for Halle Berry to finally pass the torch to another woman of color. For Yeoh, the stars had aligned and it was well deserved. Many know how great Cate is, but another statuette wouldn’t solidify or prove to the world her greatness. Michelle Yeoh is an actress long ignored and should have 2 Oscar nominations, but twice snubbed and passed over. She finally got to put her multitude of talent, years of work, into one film. I do hope that this isn’t another Halle Berry situation where we’ll have to wait another 20 odd years to see another woman of color bestowed the honor of best actress at the Academy Awards.

It was the best one in years. Usually it’s a mixed bag but this year I couldn’t believe everything I was rooting for won for the categories I cared about.
The only thing missing was more nominations for Women Talking.

Michelle Yeoh is the first Malaysian to win an Oscar. Many Malaysians including myself are so thrilled and proud of her win! This has been an incredible and heartwarming awards season in a long time with deserving winners who are finally getting their dues. Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, what an EXCELLENT winning lineup! I have so much respect for the Academy for choosing them to win not just for their great performances but to honor their legendary careers and to make up for them getting overlooked in the past. People are complaining they won for their careers but so what? They EARNED their way to win those Oscars fair and square. It was emotional when Halle Berry presented that award to Michelle, like about damn time another woman of color won it too. Hopefully it won't take too long for the next one. Can't wait for your next videos!

I am absolutely blown away by Michelle Yeoh's talent! It's funny to think that both she and Halle Berry, who both played James Bond girls, have won Oscars and were even on stage together. It's wild to think that they also both competed in the Ms. World Competition, with Yeoh in 1983 and Berry in 1986. It was such an amazing moment to see them both together on stage. Kudos to these incredible women!❤❤❤

Michelle Yeoh winning was something that gives me hope that now directors and producers can see that she’s more than a martial arts performer and I hope she’s nominated more times to come. And you can tell Halle Berry was nervous when she took a deep breath and when Michelle was called I had a feeling that Halle was happy because she’s not the lone woman of color to win best actress. Let’s hope and pray it doesn’t take too long to recognize POC for leading oscars

    • @Shadywolf09
      @Shadywolf09 Рік тому +1

Don't hold your breath. The Oscars are notorious for only selecting white winners 96% of the time. In its entirety, there have only been 4 poc out of 96 white people since 2020, which would make it 100 years of the Oscars. So 4% in 100 years. You pray it doesn't take too long? Is a century enough time?

I would also want to add that not only Yeoh had to compete with Cate performance in itself, she had to overcome 1 major thing: genre-bias. As much as I love Cate brilliant performance, it is still very Oscar type performance: dramatic grey-character-focus. While Yeoh is a comedy-action-emotional kind of acting. I'm so happy that in the Oscar history Yeoh win now will stand out so brightly among them.

Congratulations Brian on this life-changing step! It's been a pleasure watching your channel (and confidece) grow over the years. You are an inspiration. The Oscars matter in many ways but maybe not as much as their chronicle of the American zeitgeist, its progress and regression. We need and appreciate your channel for spotlighting and supporting these actors, films and performances that may have otherwise been lost to history. Keep up the great work!

Brian, I stan your videos SO HARD. They have amazing rewatchability factors because it feels like going on a time capsule whenever you cover a specific year. You deserve all the success you've achieved, you compile your videos so so well. And of course, I'm still on a high from Michelle Yeoh's win as well, it's such a rich, nuanced, textured, and dexterous performance that is the perfect amalgamation of all of her talents as you mentioned in the video. This win is not only historic and iconic, but 1000% well deserved. She was far and away my favorite in this category. This movie and performance sticks with you even after a year of its' release. I don't think I've been so happy about an acting win or any live awards show win this much in years! Michelle is so incredible and I hope she gets awards show love for American Born Chinese, which she is great in but doesn't have nearly as much screen time as I thought she would have. I personally love that the Oscars went the way of SAG this year (except for Supporting Actress, which I was still pulling for Angela Bassett). Can't wait for either your Meryl Streep Sophie's Choice video or your The Hurt Locker defeats Avatar video to come out next. Another great video, thank you!

She also had the entire cast and crew campaigning like crazy for her. I watched the movie because of Ke Huy Quans acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. So much media coverage went him and Brendan Frasers come backs. Every interview I watched he sung Michelles praises. In the meantime you have Jaimie Lee Curtis campaigning hard for her own Oscar, but again in one interview i remember her saying, 'if i win an Oscar its all thanks to Michelle Yeoh. She is this movie'.
Even things I watched with The Daniels and the stunt guys all mentioned how Michelle is phenomenal.

*"... and ladies don't ever let anybody tells you that you're passed your prime!" - Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress, Oscar 2023)*
That phrase of her speech truly solidifies and sums up her rightful win of the title for being in the industry for almost four decades equipped with diverse portfolios and experiences under her belt churning out her acting skills and mastery, film after film with passion and dedication.
Not only that but she also emphasized (took a jab towards the cooperates) that age is none of the reasons an actress can't be a lead or 1st Billing in films, tv shows, and plays. As Hollywood has the occurrence problems with aging and obsession with youth.

For the longest time Jodie Foster's win for Silence of the Lambs has been my all favorite Best Actress Oscar victory, even remaining on top after Natalie Portman's win for Black Swan.
After watching Everything Everywhere in the theater I told myself, if Michelle is nominated and wins the Oscar, this will finally be my new favorite Best Actress win.
Lo and behold, one of the most loveable, relatable dynamic performances ever put on film conquered all the odds.

Carol should’ve totally been Cate’s third Oscar tbh. But I guess the Academy doesn’t like rewarding lead LGBT characters without a tragic ending (see: Hillary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, Charlize Theron in Monster).

Or The Whale, Philadelphia, Milk, The Danish Girl, The hours, Black Swan, etc. When it comes to leading roles, each and every Oscar winner LGBTQ+ character story must not be uplifting: you have to die due to painful chronic deseases (The Whale, Philadelphia, The Danish Girl), be assassinated (Milk), kill or, at least, hurt yourself (The hours and Black Swan), etc.
Not a single LGBTQ+ leading performance with a "happy ending"/uplifting character has ever won an Oscar. Some may say it's just an unfortunate coincidence, but I beg to differ. I'd love to see this topic addressed on UA-cam someday. I agree with on what you said, and I must add: diversity is not enough, there's lack of positive representation.

Congrats on your choice, I enjoy your videos so much. One topic I'd like to see (maybe you already made it but didn't see it) was the year Tom Hanks won his first Oscar for Philadelphia. The reason I was thinking this was I recently saw clips of Schnidler's List and I think Liam Neeson should have won. I like Tom Hanks but to me, Philadelphia doesn't really hold up in my opinion.

I think another possible reason is, going back to your JLC video, is Michelle Yeoh REALLY wanted to win and talked about how much it meant for her, while Cate Blanchett really DIDN'T want to win. Blanchett was elevating her fellow nominees while implying how much winning another major award didn't matter to her.

We love this channel, too! I always watch these videos during my lunch break. I love Michelle Yeoh, as a Trekkie of course mostly bc of her role as Empress Georgiou, but I must admit that I don't like the "Everywhere....." movie. I don't hide the fact that I didn't understand it, yet it's more of an emotional thing.
She deserves an Oscar and I'm happy for her, but I don't get the movie. Particularly when compared to "Tar".
