- Lesson on Nephrotic Syndrome and causes including Minimal Change Disease, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis and Membranous Glomerulonephropathy. Nephrotic syndrome is caused by inflammation of the glomerulus (glomerlonephritis) leading to heavy levels of proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, hypercoagulability, and lipid abnormalities. Nephrotic syndrome is often caused by 3 diseases including Minimal Change Disease (which is the most common nephrotic syndrome in children), Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, and Membranous Glomerulopathy. Other causes of nephrotic syndrome include renal amyloidosis, and nodular glomerulosclerosis.
Nephrotic syndrome leads increased risks of infection, hypovolemia, thromboembolism, and protein malnutrition.
