    "I follow awkward's advice but I still lose"
    I will say, I'm still not amazing because I still ultimately have to use my own judgement during games, but the closer I am to playing how I think awkward would play, the better I am at the game. I don't think the issues come from awkward's advice, it comes from our own ability to follow it

      So true. It's very difficult to change your playstyle instantly, especially if you've been playing for a very long time (for me it's 5 years of playing OW without much dedication). I had to remind myself almost every game, "Remember the tips and lessons, remember, stop hiding, dmg dmg dmg." Sometimes I forgot and continued to play the old way just out of deep habit. But with each game, you need to remind yourself less and less, and you begin to get used to a new style. And for me, seeing the results and my own growth is the most satisfying feeling

    It's taken me about 8 months from the time I've seen your first video but I've done it. I was a Silver 2 player with OW2 as my first ever competitive pc game - I am now a GM2 Bap/Soldier main. Your straightforwardness and expertise has not only helped me improve physically, but also mentally. One thing in particular you've said that helped me immensely is, "if you're scared to derank, then you don't belong in your current rank". Completely changed my outlook on the game.

    The top 10 bap review was amazing as a masters bap main. It was interesting to see how while he has way better mechanics than me (better aim, high value lamps etc) he still made 1 mistake that's very similar to mine: letting the fate of the game be decided by your teammates instead of yourself. I'm often afraid to die first or even peek when i'm against a widow, so it's easy to fall in the trap of playing save around the corner healbotting. But this way we cannot decide the fate of the match by ourselves. We need to take more risks if we want greater influence over our games.

    • @sxrk-
      @sxrk- 5 місяців тому +2

      dw I’m GM1/T500 and i still make that mistake. I tend to win more games when my dmg and healing are 50/50 than say 20/80 depending on the game. A mistake a lot of newer players make in GM is respecting the enemies too much and allowing them to occupy valuable angles.

    Unironically, I don't have the intelligence to notice these stupid mistakes in my own gameplay too, this is why I can't improve. This is why 99% blames their team. It's not that they're losers, they just can't see their mistakes for some reason.

    • @Awkward3
      @Awkward3  5 місяців тому +26

    • @PaulMueller1990
      @PaulMueller1990 5 місяців тому +1

      Classic external locus of control: People with an external locus of control tend to attribute their lack of knowledge or mistakes to external factors, such as blaming others or external circumstances, rather than taking responsibility for their own understanding or actions. This behavior can be a defense mechanism to protect one's self-esteem by avoiding acknowledging personal shortcomings.

    • @RavenLovesArt
      @RavenLovesArt 5 місяців тому +2

      Honestly, I know boosting is bad, but the main way I improved was playing in a duo with a smurf and being carried to a higher rank. The higher i got, the faster i got punished for my mistakes, and that instant punishment is literally like someone telling you "don't do that again, that was a mistake" and you don't get that if you're playing in silver and can get away with stupid plays

    • @PaulMueller1990
      @PaulMueller1990 5 місяців тому

      By the way: Avoiding acknowledging personal shortcomings in order to protect one's self-esteem can be a taught thing (parents, environment, etc.) but it's our responsibility to overcome. Sometimes it is a hard learning experience/hard work, sometimes it just needs a change in environment. I don't think I'm wrong if I say that Awkwards community is a place where you don't get offended if you take responsibility for your shortcomings. Instead you'll get encouraged to do so.

    I myself am proof that Awkward's advice does work as I was Plat when I enrolled in RUA and managed to climb to GM in the 2 roles I play after 3 seasons. The advice itself isn't the issue with some of these players but rather their own interpretation and execution of said advice. Acknowledging the core issue that he points out and then UNDERSTANDING the solution he provides is how you improve and climb.

    I played ranked from time to time, after watching Awkward's U2GM video I went from silver 5 to plat 1. I don't play a lot of ranked because they demand so much time, I mostly just do quickplay. I can consistently out-damage everybody in the lobby. Because this aggressive/off-angle playstyle, I get a lot of friend requests in QP asking what my `real` rank is. I love your zen-related videos, they are god-tier.

  • @izal4625
    @izal4625 5 місяців тому +1

    I love this video! It's interesting to see how you can judge someone by only a few seconds of gameplay.
    Things that helped me: Trying to be more chill and taking more time with shots (I'm tense very fast, not only from playing but everything that happens fast, it's like an automatic response from my body - I'm autistic, that's probably why lol) and a lot of work on my positioning.
    And as a support: I'm not trying to help my mates that are way out of position and will die (and me likely too afterwards because I would need to get out of a good position for them), same as doing more dmg and sometimes letting a mate die, that I couldn't have kept alive anyway and switching to damage, to secure atleast 1 or 2 kills. I keep remembering that I don't need to keep everyone at full health all the time. They just need enough HP to win the fight (and there's also another support in my team!). I switched away from Mercy in lower ranks too. Too dependend on her team (and most ppl can't hit shots so there's not much value in dmg boost anyway), so I play mostly Ana, Bap, Kiri. Getting to plat/dia will work with Moira only too, because they can't handle the orbs lol.
    Also believing you can actually lead the team to a win and starting to do stuff instead of hoping the team will do it for you while you sit back.
    What I think that also helps a lot: Playing around with dpi and sens. I put my sens from 4.5 to 4 yesterday (1k dpi) because I felt like I'm to erratic in my movements especially in 1v1 or close range (from getting tense) and now I'm hitting way more consistently even tho it's only slightly different and I walked out of the first qp game (not trying out new sens in comp right away) with 7.4k dmg and 12.4k healing; 21-4 as Kiriko.

    People don't realize that off angling at the very least creates a distraction which in itself is VALUE. Even if you don't get a pick you're getting the enemy attention. That's probably the greatest advice that I've learned from not only Awkward but every top 500 player that gives advice. If you're not at least attempting to off angle and do damage you might as well uninstall the game and play something else.

    As a Kiriko main, I can tell : you're the only one who helped me get out of bronze 5. I was stuck, even when * thinking * I was doing the four step plan (I actually wasn't because I was scared of the ennemies). But when I actually started to wonder why I wasn't ranking up, tried the four step plan again, and did more damage, I *immediately* ranked up. Seriously, since then, I can win 1v3 sometimes 1v4 which I would have never done before, or with pure luck (and I would die after 1v2), I can get some sneaky kills, pressure the backlines etc. Thank you so much Awkward

I was playing casually without really trying to improve (yet tilting and getting mad at teammates ofc) for a long time on and off since ow1. But after I started applying your advice, games became EASY. First of all my win ratio went up drastically, 70%+ on Echo and ~55% on Kiriko (not as high as I'd like but still), but also I stopped caring how my teammates play, I just have fun, do as much as I can and look back at my plays to figure out my mistakes.

    i had a game the other day where my ana got mad at me (kiri) for "being too far forward the whole game" even though we won and I had the least deaths in the lobby
    i wonder how many more times she would've died if the enemy team wasn't worried about a kiri constantly in their faces

    I like playing Kiriko with the 4 step plan. I just started but it got my 30% win rate to 50%. I still need to get better at 2 things, aiming and judging when things are getting bad. Aim isn't as important but is definitely nice to have when I get better. The problem I have is everytime I die (with a few exceptions where I got unlucky with my disengage) I didn't judge when to disengage correctly and I died because of it.
    Seriously I just finished a game where I was silver 5, and there were diamond players on the enemy team. I still won because I kept following the 4 step plan.

    My problem is i push advantage but my team doesn't and i find myself overextended by myself and not particularly in cover because im pushing an agreesive advantage. Yet in low ranks my sups afk or tank sits payload so i end up front lined to stager two and lose a 1v2 looking stupid.

    You know since watching your vids ive climbed from gold 3 to diamond 5 and ive gotta say the best part of the advice ive taken is off angleing and trying to make plays. Sometimes i die yes (and thats something i try to work on cuz usuwlly its from not disengaging soon enough or just missing shots) but when it does work it helps the team out immensly and gets good value. I hate the no risk taking gameplay style alot of people take in this game. Like why be scared? Its a video game lol

Ill be junk rat and they let me die right before my one shot combo. Dmg is good. But just throw heal orb then DPS so we BOTH live and get a big advantage

      you can climb solely on hitting your sleeps and grenades. that has more value over healing/damage stats.

      @@os3688 yeah that is basically what I am trying to focus on. So managing to sleep the enemy tank and constantly having 1 to 2 ennemy purple would be enough to keep me in plat even thought my support healing sense is not great and I have difficulty to find damage on ennemy squishies in your opinion? Even if I die like 8-10 times per game? In a game I checked i had hit like 8 sleep with 68% accuracy and I had like 4 or 5 nade kills(shown in stats)

    I am new to ow2 but, i do one thing good and is learning from others. I have pretty good aim for my current rank, i lack in game knowledge but his advices are golden. In my first video that i watched of him i found him pretty annoying but the more i played the game, the more it made sense. But i have to add one thing to what he's trying to give to you, his knowledge; don't do all of it at once, improve steadly, i am in no means in a spot to be compared but i also tryed to apply every advice, but it is allot of information to be proccesed at once, improve bit by bit and you'll see resoults and that is comming from someone who moved 2 ranks in solo que only by aplying match by match something new to my game sense and knowledge.
