- Situated on a key route into Scotland, Hermitage Castle has been described as the 'guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain'. Originally built by a Norman settler it was taken by the English during the Wars of Independence, seized by the Douglas clan and was the scene of a Royal scandal between Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell.

Again another impressing cinematic travel vlog u have, it was an interesting story of hermitage castle.i was wondering at first what was those tiny holes n d walls and as u get inside i slowly understand 😉. Ahh yeah if only walls can tell tales but with the help of the written infos plus bringing us there by ur vlog it seems we're there that time. Indeed magnifique journey to old times. The history is fascinating, I often find myself wondering what it would be like during those times, probably very difficult life, but I try to picture the way they lived. @@Raybo1uk I don't have any info other than family stories and I know there is a book on the clan that I've read that states Hermitage castle belonging to the Elliotts. It was taken from them by King George and they were exiled to Georgia....where I am now. The video features several historical markers and public messages that mention the Elliott clan owning the castle for a bit.
I also am an Elliott. Have a book traces my leneage back to robert michal elliott. You can also join the clan Elliott and their website confirms the castle was the central structure of the area clan.
This is without a doubt the best video on UA-cam of Hermitage Castle. I can never tire of watching it..

I'm enamored by castles, and the Irish medieval Tower buildings. I am an avid admirer too of Mary Queen of Scots such a brave good soul, when I read she'd been there, it made me more fascinated by the castle 🏰
It's got a history too, sadly a chequered very sad one. Structurally the building is colossal height, and stone work is magnificent. Really enjoyed your posting of this castle. Just luv castles

this castle still very good and well maintained the grasses the walls are all breaks amazing ,I wish I visit castle its nice to see the old historic castles like this ,thank 's for sharing

Hi Suki, yes dashcam, just a few seconds clips from last part of the journey, nice drive up there, not a lot of traffic considering it was Sunday but I think everyone must have been eating Easter eggs 🐣😂😂 was a lovely warm day too, around 25C, nice for a picnic but not on my own lol. I think you will like the history of this castle as Mary Queen of Scots was there, it certainly looks amazing standing there on its own. Thank you for your visit, much appreciated as always 🤗😊😍🙏🏻

Very interesting - thank you ! That is a very basic heavy-duty stronghold, you do get the feeling of just how fearful Lords & Royalty must have always been of the many enemies just waiting to bump them off ! Ineed more info on this place now !
This castle has a lot of history due to its location. It is now actually a very tranquil place where you can picnic (pre covid of course 😬) and I bet the little chapel could tell many stories also 🤗👍🏻
