I was in the away end- it was a big ask for Everton to recover from a one-nill loss at home. I remember a flicker of hope when Heath scored, but we were well outplayed on the night. It was the start of our decline and the rise of that great Arsenal side.

Everton's defence was sliced open a few times here. I have not seen that happen so often.

Mental night in the old terraces at Highbury. Loved Arsenal back then. So different to the boring fakes in the new stadium.

The club lost me when they put the price of a salmon bagel up from £6 to £7.50 ..... it's getting silly now. How can a man be expected to watch 75 mins of football, leaving 15 mins before full time even at 1-1, and pay £7.50 for a Salmon bagel (£15 when bought with a frankly substandard pairing wine). I threw my half and half scarf into a bin as I left the stadium for a final time, swearing to never return!

I was in the away end with my Everton supporting mate. Definitely the most crushed I've ever felt at a game. Mustve been 5000+ squeezed into that corner. Fair play to arsenal they made a hell of a noise, one of the best atmospheres I've ever been part of. Definitely this was that Everton team's final big match before their long decline.

After this game we were all celebrating outside the changing rooms, with the players waving from the windows. Nigel Winterburn was drinking from a bottle of champagne so I shouted up to him and he poured away. Even caught some in my mouth.

51,148 was the official attendance that night, more like 55k. The next season we played Liverpool in the league cup and there was 54,029 with a good few thousand locked out. That was the last 50+k at the old Highbury as it was deemed too dangerous to allow that number in to the ground.

I often thought this loss had the same consequences as the two defeats in spring 1971 in the European Cup and FA Cup semi-final that saw the end of the team that won the league title the year before.
Though they reached the FA Cup final the next season. Top players like Trevor Steven, Pat Van Den Hauwe and Gary Stevens soon departed. And the early 1990s was a struggle, until Joe Royle took over in 1994.
Arsenal manager George Graham must have thought he'd won the pools, signing Kevin Richardson cheaply from Watford after he moved there from Everton in September 1986.
I never saw him play a bad game for the blues, and he scored some important goals for the 1983-86 team. Plus, though wiry in build was as hard as nails as Steve Mc Mahon found out in the derby games, he played in.
It was a huge mistake by Kendall to sell him when Bracewell had a major Achillies problem that ruined his Everton career, and Peter Reid's was nearing its end
Kevin Richardson won the league with Arsenal and played for England.
Both Snodin and Mc Call were vastly overpriced and not as good as him.
This vital win was the launch pad for Arsenal's success in later years.
Colin Harvey was a top player but lacked authority, and management nous to do the Everton job.

*A fan's experience of Arsenal 3-1 Everton (League Cup semi '88) - this was a great night but was it also a dangerous night?*
Thank you for uploading this. I attended this game as a 12 year old. This game occurred 14 months before the Hillsborough tragedy (where the police allowed too many fans into the ground causing 96 deaths and injuries to 766 others.) At Hillsborough there were big metal fences to stop the fans moving on to the pitch and fighting. However, when the crush started the fans were trapped by the fences and crushed to death in the most horrifying and painful manner.
In the video you can see that there were no such barriers. Wikipedia says: "Unlike at many other grounds, Arsenal refused to install perimeter fencing, even at the height of hooliganism in the 1980s, a decision that saw it struck off the list of eligible FA Cup semi-final venues.[15]" Thus Arsenal lost money because they refused to install the fencing. This decision may have stopped me from getting hurt or killed during this game.
In the video 0:24 you can see a swell of fans moving about behind the goal. The fans are standing up which meant that people could sometimes surge forward. After the Hillsborough disaster, the Taylor report said that standing terraces such as these are dangerous and recommended that they be removed. This led to stadia becoming all-seated.
I was behind one of the goals during this game. I was with two 12-13 yr old friends Norman (Arsenal fan) and Darren (Evertonian). I'm not sure if our parents knew we were there. I supported Spurs because in 1982 Spurs won the FA Cup and my brother said I couldn't support the league champions Liverpool as he wanted to support them. Therefore at the Arsenal-Everton game, I wore a Spurs football shirt hidden beneath a bright red puffer jacket. In hindsight, wearing such a shirt was a really stupid thing to do because it if had been discovered it may have led to bullying.
However, I learnt in this game that many Arsenal supporters are good people. For example, in the 2nd half my shoelace got caught beneath a man's shoe. I said "excuse me" to him several times but I guess he was fixated on the game. A number of Arsenal supporters asked me what the problem was and wanted to help. I then explained that the guy was standing on my shoelace and everyone laughed.
In the first half too many fans were let in and there was an experience of getting crushed. It wasn't dangerous like Hillsborough because there wasn't any fencing. However, there was a feeling of hundreds of men, women and children helpless together - each person unable to stop the discomfort that everyone else was experiencing.
I was frightened and as a police officer walked past I shouted "we'll let you know if anyone gets crushed to death in here". After this the pressure reduced.
Because of this experience, I really understand that the Hillsborough disaster was hellish. (Later I wrote a piece of English coursework describing what it was like from a trapped fan's point of view. The teachers appreciated it and the coursework helped me get a B in GCSE English enabling me to take A-levels.)
When the pressure eased, my friends and I could move forward to get a really good view. Arsenal then scored and won convincingly and everyone was happy. There was a lot of singing and celebrating. Even my Everton-supporting friend and I joined in. I guess the social pressure to conform got the better of us. Non-the-less it was great fun! It was a great night. Everybody treated us well. I will always remember this experience. I lost touch with my friends, but surely they will remember it too. Thanks Arsenal!

UK man loves goddesses It was exactly the same in the semi final the previous year at white heart lane in the league cup semi replay. Unbelievable overcrowding in the away end. I kid you not I was lifted off my feat for most of the second half and at times could not breath. If you went down in that you weren't coming back up again. I've been saying since the Hillsborough disaster that the main contributing factor to so many deaths that day was down mainly to the fencing. You're correct Arsenal never put fencing up and were duly stopped from holding FA Cup semis after 1985. It was only a matter of time before Hillsborough happened as the warning signs had been there in the years leading up to it. Im just surprised that it was as late as 1989 before it did happen.

I had that feeling many times as a fan of Manchester United, I think one of the worst experiences I had was at the manor ground, Oxford. That small away end was awful and with the away following we had away games were normally packed. I think this game at Highbury was probably one of last there with a full house 54,000. That was part of the fun back then standing on the terraces with your mates we didn’t know it would be so dangerous.

I can sympathize, I was on the terrace and was crushed against a small barrier there, when I got out into the aisle to take a breather, a copper told me to get back in or he would eject me from the ground...

I was there as well and remember the crowd surge at the end when they chanted 'On the pitch, on the pitch, on the pitch'. I ended up about six rows lower down the terrace than where I started and my feet never touched the ground. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Good night through! ☺

@@ZeldaFitz I got badly hurt when Rocky scored the winner in the 87 semi-final. I felt the crush coming and there was a girl in front of me standing behind a barrier. I pushed her under the barrier and then took the weight of the people behind me. In the end I suffered no more than bruising but it was a horrible experience. Spurs had sold all the tickets for the game but they were still taking cash on the turnstiles. Teach them right to hear 'one-nil down, two-one up' ringing round the ground at the end.

This Everton side should and could have gone onto to greater things in the 90's but for some slipshod management at the very top and fair to say the European ban killed much of it but FA Cup 1984, 1985 Cup Winners Cup (which was a proper good tournament that involved actual winners) two league titles in 85 and again in 87 plus another few Cup Final losses...Somehow it all went wrong
