Everton 1-0 Liverpool 1987-88 (Liverpool miss out on record run)

  • Liverpool had equalled the record of Leeds from 1973-74 of going 29 matches undefeated at the start of a top-flight season. As fate would have it, standing between them and taking the record outright were Everton, who had inflicted Liverpool's only defeat of the campaign in the League Cup in October. Could lightning strike twice? Brian Moore and Ian St John tell us.

We still had some outstanding players but by 1988 when this game was played Peter Reid was playing from memory and even the mighty Trevor Steven was a mere shadow of what he had been in previous seasons. Still, a win against the other lot is always nice...

I remember this game so well. Unfortunately I had to work that sunday on the late shift but I talk my radio into work and managed to keep in touch with the match. Then I was on a meal break for the last 20 minutes of it but I had to go in the toilet to listen to it as there was too much noise in the canteen. But you should have heard the noise I made at the final whistle!!!!! Toffees 1 and that lot 0

Rough football back then, but it did get the players more up for the fight (in footballing terms) now every little thing is picked up on, so players don’t show the aggression they use to, to want to drive on to beat there opponents (again in footballing terms) in a way of retaliation. Now McMahon and Sheedy would be serving 3 game bans for them challenges, perhaps even longer, how times have changed.

That season Liverpool lost only 4 games in all competitions: against Forest and Everton in the league, against Everton in the League Cup, and against Wimbledon in the FA Cup final.

It was slightly on the violent side that game. More like UFC than EFX and LFC.

The Merseyside derby, probably more than any derby in England, has a history going back a long time of bad tackles and violent play from both sides.

Everton are a quality team, proper English side they are, Liverpool have pi$$ed millions down the drain in the last decade with little to show for it, Everton are not far behind the top 5 6 or whatever they are called and only now have Everton found some investors, certainly a good time to be a blue and many promising youngsters to keep and eye out for. I rememer this game, was 14 years old watching it in my local pub in Ireland, it was packed and i remember the smoke and the yelling and sitting on a pool table watching the match, as they say once Everton touches you........

Did you actually go that season Eddie? This was the last game between the sides for the season. Had met each other four times and each team won twice. We were ravaged by injuries. Ratcliffe missed a huge chunk as did Steven and Sheedy. Everton got beat over two legs to Arsenal in the league cup semi final - so this game was hardly our "final"

Grob, it's so obvious. Tim Howard is doing it now. Tim's motive is to get a move (to the MLS) as he clearly doesn't need the money but the body language tells it. Just UA-cam Big Nev to see who has the dignity.
