Quads sound a good deal more transparent with the grills removed. There is a noticeable veiling effect from the grill cloth and cage. Too bad they look awful without the grills. Even with the grills on they sound very enjoyable. But without them transients really snap and low level resolution is heard even better.
I'm not a golden ear. I've never heard the difference. Safety is more of a concern, to me. The 63s may be different. I try to replace the stupid aluminium louvres with a steel grid that's a lot more open (as used in esl63 Pro). Also the theory is that you point the Al louvres down rather than up. Once again the sound difference is minimal, to me.
May I know how to remove the metal side panel and the back dust cover?
What is the point. You take the covers off and why? Is there dust in them or are they arcing?
To repair them, otherwise no need. Currently both of mine are faulty, arcing etc.
