So often art influencers just make me jealous. Even when they are teaching their tips and tricks, it's easy to envy their ability. But you make me feel like I can do art too. I know that this video didn't perform as well as you were expecting, but I really enjoy this longer form content. Your way of expressing your thought process really helps me as a begginer and I always felt that you had to attemp to put as much as posible in a short without being able to explain it as much as you wanted
As many eye tutorials as I've seen, I've never seen anyone mention how the highlight can be used to determine where the shading goes nor about how the death star structure affects the lighting. You might say this was an *eye opener* 😅

I just felt the need to let you know how valuable these are. I have Sickle Cell Anemia & spend a lot of time in my bed or in the hospital. Often, I am sometimes unable to move because of how intense the pain or my body is so low on O² that being able to eat once a day is a win. On those days, I still want to be connected to art, so I watch tutorials. I remember watching your tutorial compilation on such a day & wondering how much I'd retain from just watching tutorials, but not being able to follow along. It's been months since I saw that & I'm finally able to draw most days & I to my surprise, actually did retain a lot of information! My little rule of I can't draw I must passively learn turned out to be a great experiment. So TYSM for keep me company & continuing my art education active on days I'm not physically productive. You are very appreciated!

Dear Scott, I cannot thank you enough for how much of an inspiration you are to me. I am not much of an artist. I drew my first picture when I was 3. And that was a copy of a comic from a newspaper. My parents were proud of that drawing soo much. But as I grew up they discouraged me and told me to focus on studies instead. Some of my relatives gifted me art supplies time to time but due to my lack of knowledge and skill I usually ruined most of them..( or maybe its the undiagnosed adhd) But after years of losing touch I am finally starting to get back on track. I want to start drawing everyday but with my finals approaching really fast it is becoming hard to keep up. Last day, I did make a drawing... I made it when I was overwhelmed and had huge meltdown it was a big scribble in which i saw some flowers. I called it the "The Flowers from the Midnight Meltdown". Your are huge inspiration to me and I even have a playlist full of your mini tutorials . Please dont be sad about not getting reach. I recommed you watch the video about youtube shorts by the channel the game theory. (Sorry it is one of my hyperfixations😅) If you are reading this. Thank you and I hope one day i can meet you in person( only if you are comfortable though. I know you are huge introvert.) If you do have some form of ADD or ADHD, it means your brain is WIRED FOR CREATIVITY. Yes, we can be all over the place! And we bring disparate things together - that's discovery; that's creativity; that's art. Most of the artists I know have some form of ADD or ADHD too - you're in good company. It's who we are. It means you are MEANT to do some kind of creative work. Linear thinkers generally run the world, and a lot of them don't get us. They've turned it into a medical diagnosis. But you can take it back, and recognize it as your secret superpower. (I'm not kidding.) If you were copying comics at 3 for your first drawing, that's a good indicator. So send your inner critic off to the beach - it's working overtime! And if it comes back to pick on you, tell it that it can't come back till it's spent the whole day at the beach. (And it doesn't have a car, so it has to walk there. If you live a long way from a beach, even better.) Then just give yourself permission to make something. And practice, practice, practice. The artist inside you is waiting for you.
Hi Scott! I come from seeing your post about this video and I'm sorry it caused you so much grief. Still, I'm really happy you uploaded this longer video and gave it a try, and I'm sure everyone who's watched it thinks the same. As others have mentioned, you not only cover all the basics but you give everything time to sink in and it makes the tutorial feel like something you can follow along. It's wonderful! I've watched a lot of eye tutorials, even the ones you've uploaded as shorts, and somehow this one feels like "it". I'm a graphic designer and a community manager, and also autistic, so I can relate to what you feel. To me, it too can be hard to see something you put a lot of effort in just not "make it" (especially when every platform seems to remind you of that all the time). But sometimes, it's worth it. People here will watch your video, learn something and apply it, and that's more difficult to do with shorts (which are more of a preview or an ASMR thing, in my opinion). Whether you choose to continue this series or not, rest assured that you've touched and inspired a lot of people to make art, and that's something that it's not registered on the numbers but that will stay with all of us forever 🩷 Thanks for also becoming my inspiration to continue practicing my art 🥰 I'm not as constant as I wished to be, but after finding your channel a year or so ago, it was the first time since childhood that I got this feeling of wanting to make art for the sake of it and that it didn't matter if it was bad because I was learning. And I actually tried to apply a lot of what you do with watercolors and gouache to my coloring, which is something I've always been bad at. Thank you for sharing your art and your videos with all of us 🥰🩷

I was the kid who covered every sketchbook cover, math homework, and item of clothing in eyes (whether i used pencil, paint, bleach, or pen) and I've never stopped! I try to include eyes in all of my art, and add them all over my clothes!
This is great - first quick eye tutorial I've seen that explains why the iris should be shaded that way, which is so helpful in visualising different lighting angles.
I love how you cover every aspect. Not just how the eye works. Not just how the eye looks on a person, but every aspect down to expression. I also appreciate how simple and straightforward it is. Long tutorials tend to lose me, as I'm very flighty and just love to get into the drawing experience. I also appreciate the affirmation that practice and observation are what improves our skill the most. That no tutorial is the end all be all. It's the positivity and openess I love to see in the art community!
I just saw your post about how this video didn't perform as well as you expected but I thought it was great. It was informative, especially the part about the light source/shadowing. Coming from someone who usually comes on UA-cam to watch shorts, maybe that's what lots of other people do and that's why it didn't get as many views? Last year i watched one of your "how i draw" videos, and it was for eyes. This one is very similar to the last one. I practiced for months and, the more i look the more i see the eyes you draw in my work. I dont know if you see yourself as it, but your a teacher, a role model, and we are glad you are here.

I have been an artist for roughly 10 years now and even I got some really cool ideas from this video! Although my style doesn’t lean into realism, there are still some really neat things that you showed that I’d love to play with in my style! Not only that but you explained it all so easily, it was simple to grasp and didn’t feel demeaning! Lovely video!
I’ve been drawing digitally for ten years now, albeit I started in my teens, and eyes have always been something I struggle with. I’ve tried to study other artists and how they draw eyes, yet I still struggle with my shapes looking too flat. Definitely shows when I make animations. But watching this, I never realized it was as easy as picturing the eyeball as a ball LOL. Thank you for this! Inspired me to draw a bit today.

I was hesitant at first to watch your longer form content, but your personality actually make it really enjoyable. If you decide to draw "every" eyelash (please don't, please please please!), take care to have them not be perfectly aligned and going the same direction. Real eyelashes crisscross one another, aren't equal lengths, and aren't the same thickness. This is where a reference library comes in very handy! Scott always says to use references and he's 100% correct. Especially with eyes. There's a lot to study with them! I don't know why I never drew eyes the way you do, Scott. I mean, I never (not even in my art classes) started with an orb. I have recently done so and...? I'm not sure I see the difference. Maybe it's 50+ years of bad habits or maybe I just wasn't built to draw eyes that way, but they end up looking remarkably alike. I may need drawing boot camp to break me down and help me develop better habits & skills. (I know, I know, it'd have to be done online because our spicy neurodivergent brains would make in person boot camp awkward, but it's not a bad idea, right?)

This was super helpful 💞 Growing up drawing I was always told realism was the only way to be known as a real artist, so while I struggle with realism, I notice that I favor a more stylized look to my drawings. This is the best explanation of how to draw an eye I've seen. The use of the anatomy of the eyeball makes sense. I have to show this to my son it will really help him.❤
Some extra tips if you want to get a deeper understanding of eyes: 1- there are three basic lines on the top of the eye and 2 basic lines on the bottom. 2- draw the eye socket before the eye to understand where it gets placed on the face 3- there are some parts of skin that give thickness to the eyelid, so add a highlight right above the bottom eyelid (or top depending on the light source)
I wish you would do long format videos regularly. I just happened upon one of your livestreams a couple months ago. I never usually watch shorts, but a 20-40 mins art tutorial--I'm all about it ;)
Thanks for this - I have been drawing eyes for my whole life and this really helped me see where I was going wrong and getting frustrated with my art. You are an excellent instructor and it would be great to see more of this type of videos. I will likely rewatch this a few dozen times to get better at eyes!
i think personally these kind of videos are very valuable, there's a lot more that can be said in a longer form video that shorts simply cant provide. This becoming a series would be very cool! I personally think your videos provide better tips and tricks than many ive seen, and your kind attitude makes things more helpful to watch so i think a series or other videos like this would be great!

I really struggle to draw because I never had any practice growing up, but you inspire me to want to practice more. Thank you for teaching me something new! Like the iris being a cone, I always thought it was only the lashes and eyelids creating the shadow, now it all makes much more sense! As someone who's been drawing my whole life (three and a half decades), and has obsessively drawn eyes almost that entire time, your Death Star analogy is the first time that the lighting of an iris has made sense to me. I've known for awhile now that the shape of the eye bows in under the cornea, but exactly how that affects the lighting has just refused to click with me. Thank you for pointing it out, and for sharing. As for UA-cam complaining about this video not doing well yesterday... I didn't watch it yesterday because I had some very demanding errands. I'm very grateful for this video to be here to watch today, though, and eager for my next opportunity to use what I've learned! I currently have a project lined up that was a bird a day for January, but I had a surprise eviction sprung on me and wasn't able to stick with it... but that doesn't mean I'm going to give up on the project, because it's still a lot of fun to explore all the different bird species being proposed to be explored. Perhaps this new view of Death-Star-eyeballs will help bring new life to my raptors, in particular I'm thinking of what I have lined up for owls and particularly the Bateleur (a type of short-tailed eagle... basically). And not only am I excited to see how and when I'll incorporate this new observation into my art, but also excited to see when and how I'll notice this new shape in life. Will it explain how Buddy's eye sometimes catches a brilliant gold arc, particularly when under his supplemental light at night? Will I see it the next time I go in for the daring glance of eye contact that society demands? Will it catch my attention the next time I'm snuggling my dear Robin, and in a face full of feathers, his happily squinting eye will expose its mysteries of shape to me? PS- A fun way to think about pupils is that from what WE see, they ARE a complete absence of light since our retinas are designed to absorb as much light as possible. That means that pupils are one of few places where it's appropriate to use the purest of blacks that you have access to, and also why despite blue ballpoints being my go-to for doodling these days, I still have some Microns just for pupils. PPS- My rooster, Buddy, wants to say, "Hi!" He came over while I was writing this comment, and he's always very curious about what I'm doing and tries his best to join in and "help". Of course, he doesn't really understand how to type, but he knows that touching the screen makes the phone do things, so he'll peck around the screen while watching videos or games with me to try and mimic me. Both of my boys seem to enjoy your voice quite a lot, too! I'll have to catch one of your livestreams someday and let you know they're watching. :3

I only saw this because of your community post, even though I watch your shorts regularly and this type of tutorial art dive is exactly what I want to see. UA-cam really punishes creators for stepping out of their typical content, especially from shorts to videos! I’ve seen long-form video creators make and entirely new channel for shorts, but if you want to keep both on the same channel maybe announce when you have a new longer video in a community post? At least until your longer videos start gaining some traction. I know I would be showing up if I knew you had any longer videos! I don’t watch live streams much at all but this is the sort of content I love ^.^

As someone who's been drawing more "seriously" in the last year or two, I always love seeing your shorts and your process, since I often only stick to pencil I really struggle to branch out into other mediums. Your content helps inspire me with my own art! This video was really informative for me, I try and notice all the little things around me in life that make art feel more real/distinct to look at too. One thing I'd not really thought about was how the inward part of the eye impacts the shadows, all the eyes in my art, though I am proud of them, lack that extra sense of depth you created. I'll try and experiment with eyes in my artstyle more with this knowledge to help me! Though I didn't know about the video until the community post about it showed up on my feed, I'm glad I took the time to check it out. Goodness, I just came around to watching this video and now I feel really bad I didn't do so sooner - I assumed it was a long-form video and didn't notice the 3-minute lenght, so I put it aside for my quick break watchlist. I'm not an artist that draws, but it always fascinates me how others make characters and people come to life on either physical or digital paper. I always love how you explain things in a way everyone of all experience levels can understand! I definitely learned something new today :) The algo is one unpredictable mistress that you can never truly satisfy unfortunately, it makes you play games with it, yet never able to truly catch it in most cases. The other day, I stumbled upon a channel where videos had less than 4k views of the past 2 years, most barely got a couple hundred... but their latest upload got half a million views! It just shows how broken the system is. I hope my comment helps boost this video a bit, it truly deserves it!

I hava many drawing books and seen many videos, but no one has ever explained how the shadows of the iris work. It makes so much sense now! The iris itself is indented but the highlight is hitting the cornea. Thanks!

Here is an idea for some longer form content. I love some of the experiments you have done on shorts. I think it would be cool to do longer form art, techniques, or art supply experiments. You could even do myth buster type art experiments. You could do art history videos or something else that interests you about art. We love your personality along with your art. We want to see both. More importantly we want to see YOU having fun!!! I have been loving your longer form videos. Please do a series! Even in different styles of art too! Thanks for everything ❤

Here after reading the community post. Its such a shame that important and useful long-form videos like this go unnoticed or underperform because of short-form content. I know the struggles of editing for hours on end only for them to do poorly. So I'm here to show my support Thank you for the amazing and informative videos you make for us. I would never have considered drawing the eyeball then starting from there. When you put it like that, if makes so much sense as to where and why we place the shadows where we do. I'll definitely use this trick when I draw eyes next time, thank you!

Dear Scott,
I cannot thank you enough for how much of an inspiration you are to me. I am not much of an artist. I drew my first picture when I was 3. And that was a copy of a comic from a newspaper. My parents were proud of that drawing soo much. But as I grew up they discouraged me and told me to focus on studies instead. Some of my relatives gifted me art supplies time to time but due to my lack of knowledge and skill I usually ruined most of them..( or maybe its the undiagnosed adhd)
But after years of losing touch I am finally starting to get back on track. I want to start drawing everyday but with my finals approaching really fast it is becoming hard to keep up. Last day, I did make a drawing... I made it when I was overwhelmed and had huge meltdown it was a big scribble in which i saw some flowers. I called it the "The Flowers from the Midnight Meltdown".
Your are huge inspiration to me and I even have a playlist full of your mini tutorials .
Please dont be sad about not getting reach. I recommed you watch the video about youtube shorts by the channel the game theory. (Sorry it is one of my hyperfixations😅)

If you do have some form of ADD or ADHD, it means your brain is WIRED FOR CREATIVITY. Yes, we can be all over the place! And we bring disparate things together - that's discovery; that's creativity; that's art. Most of the artists I know have some form of ADD or ADHD too - you're in good company. It's who we are. It means you are MEANT to do some kind of creative work. Linear thinkers generally run the world, and a lot of them don't get us. They've turned it into a medical diagnosis. But you can take it back, and recognize it as your secret superpower. (I'm not kidding.) If you were copying comics at 3 for your first drawing, that's a good indicator. So send your inner critic off to the beach - it's working overtime! And if it comes back to pick on you, tell it that it can't come back till it's spent the whole day at the beach. (And it doesn't have a car, so it has to walk there. If you live a long way from a beach, even better.) Then just give yourself permission to make something. And practice, practice, practice. The artist inside you is waiting for you.

I come from seeing your post about this video and I'm sorry it caused you so much grief. Still, I'm really happy you uploaded this longer video and gave it a try, and I'm sure everyone who's watched it thinks the same. As others have mentioned, you not only cover all the basics but you give everything time to sink in and it makes the tutorial feel like something you can follow along. It's wonderful! I've watched a lot of eye tutorials, even the ones you've uploaded as shorts, and somehow this one feels like "it".
I'm a graphic designer and a community manager, and also autistic, so I can relate to what you feel. To me, it too can be hard to see something you put a lot of effort in just not "make it" (especially when every platform seems to remind you of that all the time). But sometimes, it's worth it. People here will watch your video, learn something and apply it, and that's more difficult to do with shorts (which are more of a preview or an ASMR thing, in my opinion).
Whether you choose to continue this series or not, rest assured that you've touched and inspired a lot of people to make art, and that's something that it's not registered on the numbers but that will stay with all of us forever 🩷
Thanks for also becoming my inspiration to continue practicing my art 🥰 I'm not as constant as I wished to be, but after finding your channel a year or so ago, it was the first time since childhood that I got this feeling of wanting to make art for the sake of it and that it didn't matter if it was bad because I was learning. And I actually tried to apply a lot of what you do with watercolors and gouache to my coloring, which is something I've always been bad at.

I was the kid who covered every sketchbook cover, math homework, and item of clothing in eyes (whether i used pencil, paint, bleach, or pen) and I've never stopped! I try to include eyes in all of my art, and add them all over my clothes!
I love how expressive eyes are, and they can tell you a lot about a person. They truly are the windows to the soul.
I always knew that the light on the iris was sort of opposite to on the white of the eye, but knowing it’s a cone will be so much easier to remember!
This is great - first quick eye tutorial I've seen that explains why the iris should be shaded that way, which is so helpful in visualising different lighting angles.
I love how you cover every aspect. Not just how the eye works. Not just how the eye looks on a person, but every aspect down to expression. I also appreciate how simple and straightforward it is. Long tutorials tend to lose me, as I'm very flighty and just love to get into the drawing experience. I also appreciate the affirmation that practice and observation are what improves our skill the most. That no tutorial is the end all be all. It's the positivity and openess I love to see in the art community!
I just saw your post about how this video didn't perform as well as you expected but I thought it was great. It was informative, especially the part about the light source/shadowing. Coming from someone who usually comes on UA-cam to watch shorts, maybe that's what lots of other people do and that's why it didn't get as many views? Last year i watched one of your "how i draw" videos, and it was for eyes. This one is very similar to the last one. I practiced for months and, the more i look the more i see the eyes you draw in my work. I dont know if you see yourself as it, but your a teacher, a role model, and we are glad you are here.
I wouldnt mind more of this. I enjoy seeing someones step-by-step process. It allows me to try it my self. Thank you for experimenting.

I have been an artist for roughly 10 years now and even I got some really cool ideas from this video! Although my style doesn’t lean into realism, there are still some really neat things that you showed that I’d love to play with in my style! Not only that but you explained it all so easily, it was simple to grasp and didn’t feel demeaning! Lovely video!
I’ve been drawing digitally for ten years now, albeit I started in my teens, and eyes have always been something I struggle with. I’ve tried to study other artists and how they draw eyes, yet I still struggle with my shapes looking too flat. Definitely shows when I make animations.
But watching this, I never realized it was as easy as picturing the eyeball as a ball LOL. Thank you for this! Inspired me to draw a bit today.

I was hesitant at first to watch your longer form content, but your personality actually make it really enjoyable. If you decide to draw "every" eyelash (please don't, please please please!), take care to have them not be perfectly aligned and going the same direction. Real eyelashes crisscross one another, aren't equal lengths, and aren't the same thickness. This is where a reference library comes in very handy! Scott always says to use references and he's 100% correct. Especially with eyes. There's a lot to study with them!
I don't know why I never drew eyes the way you do, Scott. I mean, I never (not even in my art classes) started with an orb. I have recently done so and...? I'm not sure I see the difference. Maybe it's 50+ years of bad habits or maybe I just wasn't built to draw eyes that way, but they end up looking remarkably alike. I may need drawing boot camp to break me down and help me develop better habits & skills. (I know, I know, it'd have to be done online because our spicy neurodivergent brains would make in person boot camp awkward, but it's not a bad idea, right?)

This was super helpful 💞 Growing up drawing I was always told realism was the only way to be known as a real artist, so while I struggle with realism, I notice that I favor a more stylized look to my drawings. This is the best explanation of how to draw an eye I've seen. The use of the anatomy of the eyeball makes sense. I have to show this to my son it will really help him.❤
Some extra tips if you want to get a deeper understanding of eyes:
1- there are three basic lines on the top of the eye and 2 basic lines on the bottom.
2- draw the eye socket before the eye to understand where it gets placed on the face
3- there are some parts of skin that give thickness to the eyelid, so add a highlight right above the bottom eyelid (or top depending on the light source)
Would love this as a series. I always wanted to get back to drawing and get better at it and you're very good at explainig the process

i think personally these kind of videos are very valuable, there's a lot more that can be said in a longer form video that shorts simply cant provide. This becoming a series would be very cool! I personally think your videos provide better tips and tricks than many ive seen, and your kind attitude makes things more helpful to watch so i think a series or other videos like this would be great!

Thank you for teaching me something new! Like the iris being a cone, I always thought it was only the lashes and eyelids creating the shadow, now it all makes much more sense! As someone who's been drawing my whole life (three and a half decades), and has obsessively drawn eyes almost that entire time, your Death Star analogy is the first time that the lighting of an iris has made sense to me. I've known for awhile now that the shape of the eye bows in under the cornea, but exactly how that affects the lighting has just refused to click with me. Thank you for pointing it out, and for sharing.
As for UA-cam complaining about this video not doing well yesterday... I didn't watch it yesterday because I had some very demanding errands. I'm very grateful for this video to be here to watch today, though, and eager for my next opportunity to use what I've learned! I currently have a project lined up that was a bird a day for January, but I had a surprise eviction sprung on me and wasn't able to stick with it... but that doesn't mean I'm going to give up on the project, because it's still a lot of fun to explore all the different bird species being proposed to be explored. Perhaps this new view of Death-Star-eyeballs will help bring new life to my raptors, in particular I'm thinking of what I have lined up for owls and particularly the Bateleur (a type of short-tailed eagle... basically). And not only am I excited to see how and when I'll incorporate this new observation into my art, but also excited to see when and how I'll notice this new shape in life. Will it explain how Buddy's eye sometimes catches a brilliant gold arc, particularly when under his supplemental light at night? Will I see it the next time I go in for the daring glance of eye contact that society demands? Will it catch my attention the next time I'm snuggling my dear Robin, and in a face full of feathers, his happily squinting eye will expose its mysteries of shape to me?
PS- A fun way to think about pupils is that from what WE see, they ARE a complete absence of light since our retinas are designed to absorb as much light as possible. That means that pupils are one of few places where it's appropriate to use the purest of blacks that you have access to, and also why despite blue ballpoints being my go-to for doodling these days, I still have some Microns just for pupils.
PPS- My rooster, Buddy, wants to say, "Hi!" He came over while I was writing this comment, and he's always very curious about what I'm doing and tries his best to join in and "help". Of course, he doesn't really understand how to type, but he knows that touching the screen makes the phone do things, so he'll peck around the screen while watching videos or games with me to try and mimic me. Both of my boys seem to enjoy your voice quite a lot, too! I'll have to catch one of your livestreams someday and let you know they're watching. :3

I only saw this because of your community post, even though I watch your shorts regularly and this type of tutorial art dive is exactly what I want to see. UA-cam really punishes creators for stepping out of their typical content, especially from shorts to videos! I’ve seen long-form video creators make and entirely new channel for shorts, but if you want to keep both on the same channel maybe announce when you have a new longer video in a community post? At least until your longer videos start gaining some traction. I know I would be showing up if I knew you had any longer videos! I don’t watch live streams much at all but this is the sort of content I love ^.^

As someone who's been drawing more "seriously" in the last year or two, I always love seeing your shorts and your process, since I often only stick to pencil I really struggle to branch out into other mediums. Your content helps inspire me with my own art! This video was really informative for me, I try and notice all the little things around me in life that make art feel more real/distinct to look at too. One thing I'd not really thought about was how the inward part of the eye impacts the shadows, all the eyes in my art, though I am proud of them, lack that extra sense of depth you created. I'll try and experiment with eyes in my artstyle more with this knowledge to help me! Though I didn't know about the video until the community post about it showed up on my feed, I'm glad I took the time to check it out. Please remember that despite what UA-cam's analytics try to say, there are many of us who truly appreciate your videos and the effort you put into each and every one

Goodness, I just came around to watching this video and now I feel really bad I didn't do so sooner - I assumed it was a long-form video and didn't notice the 3-minute lenght, so I put it aside for my quick break watchlist.
I'm not an artist that draws, but it always fascinates me how others make characters and people come to life on either physical or digital paper. I always love how you explain things in a way everyone of all experience levels can understand! I definitely learned something new today :)
The algo is one unpredictable mistress that you can never truly satisfy unfortunately, it makes you play games with it, yet never able to truly catch it in most cases. The other day, I stumbled upon a channel where videos had less than 4k views of the past 2 years, most barely got a couple hundred... but their latest upload got half a million views! It just shows how broken the system is.

I hava many drawing books and seen many videos, but no one has ever explained how the shadows of the iris work. It makes so much sense now! The iris itself is indented but the highlight is hitting the cornea. Thanks!

I love some of the experiments you have done on shorts. I think it would be cool to do longer form art, techniques, or art supply experiments.
You could even do myth buster type art experiments.
You could do art history videos or something else that interests you about art.
We love your personality along with your art. We want to see both. More importantly we want to see YOU having fun!!!
