2024 Husqvarna Svartpilen 801 Review - can it stand-out from the other parallel-twin roadsters?

  • Remarkably, Husqvarna’s scrambler-styled Svartpilen range is almost 10 years old, having first been revealed as a concept back in 2014. Ever since then, the model has stayed strictly single, from the original 401, to the flagship 701 and the more recent learner-legal 125. Now, for the very first time, a Svartpilen is available with a twin-cylinder engine.
    This new 801 replaces the discontinued 701 but broadly follows the same Svartpilen formula: distinctive modern/retro styling, built around the mechanical foundations from a KTM Duke. In this case, it’s the 790 Duke - a bike that’s now, slightly confusingly, actually built by CFMoto. So what do we really have here then? Is this simply a rebadged version of an already-rebadged bike? Or is the Svartpilen 801 really unique enough to deserve a spot among the increasingly crowded world of parallel-twin roadsters?

    Great to have Martin back as a journalist. All the stuff you want to know, with considered opinions placing the bike in the wider context and giving a strong sense of how it feels to ride. Thank you!

    I like my modern classics but I think this is an extremely handsome bike with modern touches in the right places. I particularly love the shape of the tank. I realise it’s the one part that has divided people into two camps. I am rather tempted to check it out. Great review thanks.

    Your review and commentary has me wanting to buy this motorcycle. The motorcycle has a great deal to do with that of course and here the price is $NZ 16,799.00 + ORC. That in comparison to a HD sportster size M/c is excellent IMHO. I wont be rushing in and no information was available regarding the dynamic package online. With just over 100HP and a high ground clearance this is a formidble machine capable surely of everything a road and occasional slick off road rider can require. You really have sold me on it but the dollar is a pretty tight at present coming through the financial squeeze of covid inspired price spike across everything. I think I'm in love again!

    Greetings Mufga. Great review. Gsxs1000s or kawasaki z900 rs can be had for similar money. Lovely machine but not sure about the reliability of ktm group engines/ electrics. Time will tell. Do we know how well the 790 duke has performed for build and reliability? Looked like great fun btw! Conall, 😂

    • @Mufga81
      @Mufga81 24 дні тому +1

      The first 790 Dukes did have a few issues - I seem to remember hearing/reading about coolant leaks, warped discs, switchgear and electrics being the weakpoints. More recently some owners have discovered camshaft issues with 790 motors. Time will tell whether they've been addressed. If it offers any peace of mind, Husky now extend the standard warranty from 2 to 4 years, so long as you get your bike serviced at an official dealer.

    @bennetsbikesocial did you get any time on a highway with this bike?
    I currently own a Svartpilen 401, and am considering on of these for an upgrade, so I wonder if/how much better this one would be. Obviously there are many upgrades here, plus more power and weight, so I expect that to be a big improvement. My one issue with the 401, however is that with its lack of any fairings, and being as light weight as it is, it feels sketchy to ride on highways when I have to do that. I feel like I’m being battered by the air on my chest and helmet, and then generally blown around by trucks passing me and so on. How did the 801 feel in that regard?

    • @yohanyonsson
      @yohanyonsson 24 дні тому

      I just traded my 401 Svart for the 801. It’s like trading in a moped for a motorcycle. I loved the 401 but as you say, speed up and it gets sketchy. The 801 is very stable @ 120km/h, felt like I was being blown off on the 401 at high speeds when it was windy. Go for it! The 801 is a fantastic bike! Bigger than the 401 as well.

    • @Mufga81
      @Mufga81 24 дні тому

      We didn't do much highway, no, but I think an 801 will feel much more solid, stable and give you a lot more confidence at motorway speeds than a 401.

    Fair review. I bought mine 2 days ago and have ridden 300km (edit not 30000km) so far. I must say I love it! The suspension and the motor is great. The ride position is a little more aggressive than I thought it would be. Don’t agree about the gearbox, mine feels smooth. The only things that bothers me are that the dynamic mode isn’t included, not even the first 1000km = can’t power wheelie. The Bluetooth connectivity isn’t working as it should either, can’t connect the intercom and can’t make calls, so kinda pointless function.

    • @jackrichards1863

      @yohanyonsson You must have to have a Chinese cell phone? Riding 300 hours distance of endurance testing in two days (check your comment?) has me bowing to you as I type this. With the laptop on the floor for perspective , you are clearly the uncontested GOD of motorcycle riders. I would tip my hat sir, but this crash helmet is firmly excluding my fingers from the rim of my hat !! No dynamic included really is short changing the consumer on essential feature. I am considering joining your ranks altho no way will I ever reach 30000 miles in a pair of days , perhaps a couple of years Eh?!

The diaper number is displayed but not the contact info. Might be a setting I have missed but it’s a little annoying.

    I think the gearbox will loosen up a bit in time. Mine did on my 790 Duke.
    Full throttle is more comparible with the MT07, not this one. Well, they are at the same pricelevel. But otherwise the 801 is superior.
    And I can see there are already comments from non KTM owners on camshafts. Keyboard warriors who wants to appear as if they are clever. Ignore them!

      I had the XSR700 (Mt07 in different clothes) for a few weeks before I got the 801. The 801 blows it away in every aspects, especially regarding suspension and power delivery. The xsr700 is very much on/off when it comes to power delivery, the 801 is smooooth.

    What's it like compared to the Street Triple?

    • @Mufga81
      @Mufga81 24 дні тому +1

      The Street Triple 765 RS is stiffer, sportier, sharper and more focused, closer to a naked sportsbike. The Svartpilen is softer, more laid-back, and I think more versatile as a result.

    I wanted a Husqvarna 901, I bought a Yamaha Tracer9 GT+ Why? My local Husqvarna/KTM dealership made me a derogatory offer for my bike and wouldn't budge. My local Yamaha dealer offered me £2900 more than £3500 the Husqvarna/KTM dealer offered me, so yes, that is a lot of money to me at least. Am I happy? Oh yes! The Tracer 9 GT+ is phenomenal, so a big "thank you" Husqvarna/KTM dealer.
