I find it ironic that they made Steven Universe the show to give out PSAs about racism and bigotry, when the Crystal Gems and the Diamonds have enslaved, killed, tortured or shattered other gems in the process, because they didn't fit the Diamonds view of what it means to be the perfect gem. That's a big ol yikes from me dawg and while I do think their intentions are good, it was handled poorly.

Usually aliens are used to create an allegory for racism as a concept, so as an allegory they work when they're kept specifically as a more general description of the concept or any other type of oppression based on people being different. In fiction things are kept as allegories and as more abstract ideas so they can related to different types of ideas and perspectives, not just a specific one. The gems don't work as allegories for racism towards black people in america specifically, but they can work as a metaphor for how people see different types of people, how they might fear those who have power, how people meeting different cultures can feel alienating for everyone involved, etc.
Though I'm just speaking generally here about the overall idea of using vague and abstract ideas in fiction to work as allegories for multiple different topics. We have loads of different cultures that have different viewpoints, so people are bound to view these ideas from loads of different aspects. And these viewpoints constantly shift too as time moves on. The more timeless you want a work to be, the less specific it should be. There is a difference between talking about how different types of political structures work and that some orange man is bad. The former will most likely be much more nuanced while the latter is.. exactly what you think it is.

This thing about the POC's is like why I hate people calling *"EVERYONE WHO IS NOT AMERICAN OR CANADIAN"*: "latinos" when the correct term us hispanic people. The term "latinos" translates to: someone from Latin America. (Btw, latin america is spanish for South America). So I dont like it when they use that terms for Mexicans or people of central america (like me, I'm a white central american). Mexicans are north American, yet nobody refers to them that way, same with us central americans. Just say Hispanic people and I'll be cool. But oh, no, we are going to put everyone below our sacred hamburger loving and maple eating lands in tge same basket of "latinos". Im hispanic, not south american.

I wanna clear up something to people who think the PSA's are hated because "propaganda and pushing a agenda".
Most people are not mad at the messages of the PSA's. But how the message was portrayed. This can be said for the entirety of Steven universe and why it gets so much criticism. No one is mad Steven universe tried to tackle War/Genocide/Abusive relationships/PTSD. They're mad because of how poorly they were going about them.
Oh, what's this? War can have extremes on both sides causing both to make drastic decisions. Let's just bubble the one person who knew this and devalue her while praising Rose for doing essentially the same thing. Oh, the diamonds are genocidal tyrants? Let's just give all a 3-minute pep talk each about how genocide is bad. Oh, Lapis and Jasper were in an abusive relationship? Let's just make Lapis look like the victim despite both being in the wrong. Oh, Steven has PTSD? Let's just make him act like a jerk for half the season with no repercussions for his toxic behavior because his trauma excuses it. Do you see the point?
Steven universe of all shows is the worst to be tackling racism when other tough subjects have been thought out horridly under their writing. Thus making people, not like it.

How they portrayed their messages is definitely poorly written and it shows that they don't really know much of what they're talking about but as long as they're promoting anti-racism, that's all that matters in the end.

If this is the case, then any POC will be racist at some point. If you accept this definition but don’t think POCs can be racist, that means that you either think POCs will never have institutional power, which defeats the point of fighting for their rights, or you are using the definition as an excuse to claim racism towards white people can’t exist.
I understand that it is much less common and usually not systemic, but racism towards white people absolutely exists.

Secondly the term anti-racist doesn't mean calling out racism when it occurs like it sounds like at first glance, but rather it's another langauge creole for redistribution of resources based on race, aka Racial Communism, it's another of those damned word games these degenerates like to play like with their made up Prejudice + Power definition of Racism.

I prefer Mr. Enter's take on all Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst's PSAs, especially Amethyst's. He did a video talking about a bunch of PSAs. Towards the end, he talks about the SU ones except Greg's. He questioned who was comparing aliens to other races and why is this worth dedicating a PSA to instead of the actual problems concerning racism. He also found the message of See Color to be extraordinarily problematic which it really is. Seeing color is racism. Police brutality and keeping black people in poverty came from those who "saw color." The end goal of fighting racism is a world where we don't judge based on skin color.
I actually heard responses saying Amethyst's PSA came from a SU fan who was bullied over something related to how Amethyst is racially coded. I asked who the fuck would know that outside of those very people who bullied that person. The PSA isn't presented like it's only meant for certain people to hear. Yah, as a black person I've never liked when people say you can't be racist to white people, and I've heard the argument that technically white isn't a race so you can't be racist to white people, and while technically yes, i don't like calling bad acts like that prejudice instead of racism because our brains literally don't hold the two words to the same weight and the situation will be automatically taken less seriously,
like how articles where a teacher has a sexual incounter with under age students, if the teachers a man and the students a girl, the articles will say "teacher rapes student" but if the teachers a woman and the students a boy the articles say " teacher had sex with student",
Because the victim is a miner, bothe statements are true but because they don't use the word "rape" our brains simply don't perceive it as bad even tho it's the same, and this mentality has led to society as a whole taking rape twords boys and men significantly less serious, I think we should take it seriously no matter what.
It's the same with white people, like the example that jar gave, that was a horrible act that should be labeled a hate crime and taken just as seriously as any other, and when people that are affected by this stuff see people not taking it as seriously it will make them feel wronged and will create more devision and other wise reasonable people might be on some "well if you don't care about us, then why should we care about you" type beat, and trying to convert them to allyship will be significantly harder, so I think if we just bite the bullet and say "yes you can be racist to white people" things would progress faster.
And in general I don't like trying to make someone feel bad about a feature they have no control over, so I personally avoide using slurs twords anyone including white people.
However, I feel we can't ignore the grater context of the situation, like I said i don't personally use slurs twords anyone, but I don't hold slurs twords white people to the same standard, it's like making fun of a rich person who dropped their food vs a poor person who dropped their food, it sucks for both people but it means significantly more to the por person than to the rich person so I'm much more hesitant to laugh in the case of the poor person than the rich person.
And some acts that are considered racist for one group aren't and shouldn't be considered racist for others, FX all black colleges, vs all white colleges, I don't consider an all black college racist because with our current system, black people are at a significant disadvantage compared to white people, so trying to give them some aid in that aspect makes perfect sense, yes there are pore white people but on average they are going to have a much easier time compared to a black person with the same resources available to them due to our current system.
I would consider an all white college racist because the point of an all black college is to decrease the disparity between the average black person and the average white person by lifting up black people to the same playing field, But if white people are already on average at the top, than it would only increase the gap, so what other purpose would it surve besides creating more devision?
ideally we would take all slurs seriously and yoir race wouldn't be a factor in anything like college, but we first have to get rid of the disparities between each group, but we simply aren't there yet.

    • @flammingsandwich6242
      @flammingsandwich6242 3 роки тому +1

@7 Time UA-cam Outlaw your looking at this whole situation as if it were in a vacuum, white and Asian people being discriminated against when it comes to college on it's own sounds horrible (and when it comes to Asians I think it is) when you look at the reason why , although I don't particularly agree with it, it becomes much more reasonable,
think about it like a massive race between white people, Asian people, and Black people (obviously this logic would apply to other groups, for simplification sake, this is what I'm going with) where instead of everyone starting at the same distance from the finish line, you're education determines how close or far you are from it and once times up whoever made it through goes on and whoever doesn't has to try some other time.
That sounds fair enough until you factor in the fact that white people inflicted a massive amount of harm on the Asian and black communities, causing availability and quality of education for them to be significantly lower in comparison to White people, because of that and modern day prejudices, both Asian and black people start significantly further from the finish line, Black people even more so because the harm inflicted was comparitvly more severe.
Luckily (or unluckily seeing as how it can be at a severe detriment to mental health) for Asians, Asian culture has a far more diligent approach to education, meaning that Asian families tend to prioritize and hyper focus on education far more than either White or Black people, which means the gap between White and Asian people is greatly diminished in that aspect, not to a equal extent but a notable extent.
Obviously a lot more white and Asian people are going to pass, and every persen that passes helps to improve their community, better community = better education which means higher chance at success for the next gen, and since Black people start so far down the track compared to white and Asian people, obviously no wear near as many are making it through, which means they can't improve their community anywhere near as much, which means the next gen would have barely moved there position on the track, we're as Wite and Asian people have greatly improved their position, creating an even bigger gap.
like I said i don't think it's the best solution but when looking at the whole picture it makes a lot more sense and will more than likely do more good than harm, although it maybe minimal.
I do think it's significantly less justified in the case of Asian's though, because there making it just because there Coulter is just better at studying, we're as white people are making it due to the massive handicap they inflicted on literally every other community.
and with the all black schools being racist, if they have racist behaviors or are making racist remarks then obviously i condemn them for that, but like I said, it simply being an all black college, wen all factors are realized, it doesn't necessitate that the schools as an implementation is racist.
And with white people making up the majority of people in poverty in the US, you're making the "but more white people get killed by police" argument, yes more white people get killed by police, but that's just because their are more white people in the US, 236 million white people compared to 41 million black people, that's over 5× more white people compared to black people in the US, so obviously they would be killed more by the police because there's just more of them to be killed,
But when you actually look at the stats, black people are 3× more likely to be killed by police, in other words if 100 white people get pulled over by a cop, and 20 of the 100 people get killed, if you put 100 black people through the same scenario, ruffly 60 of the 100 people will be killed.
also i just wanted to add, I avoided saying "systematic racism" in the first comment because I feel it gives off the vibe of being intentional, while I do think there is still plenty of intentional systematic racism in our system, I am not educated enough to say what and where exactly it is aside from the police and job name discrimination,
But I opted out to just saying it's the system because it seems more passive, witch it is, something doesn't have to be intentional in order to be systemic, infact I would argue the biggest contribution to systematic racism is unintentional prejudices that get perpetuated and go un checked because it's unintentional and mostly everyone does it and just doesn't notice.

    • @TuesdaysArt

Honestly, I find the whole concept of whiteness in general to be "problematic" (for a lack of a better term). Whiteness was just a metric for what people were "superior" over other people. Irish people and Italian people used to not be considered white, but they're considered white today. "Whiteness" is arbitrary. It lumps together people from vastly different cultures all because they fit a standard some racist came up with centuries before they were born.
I don't know if I'm wording myself in the best way, I apologize if I come across the wrong way.

    • @flammingsandwich6242
      @flammingsandwich6242 3 роки тому +1

@7 Time UA-cam Outlaw if you're not looking at this in a vacuum then you must be ignorant, or are making Purposefully ignorant statements.
You say I'm clinging to a backwards mentality were we punishe innocent people for the wrong doings of others, but you seem to not realize our society is built off that "backwards mentality" in the form of some laws,
FX covid restrictions were significantly more severe due to dumb asses not wanting to were a mask, because of their wrong doing, innocent people were punished by being forced to cancel their trip to Disney land, not being able to have a big birthday party, or going shopping at the mall cuz it's two crowded, these people were law abiding citizens who were a mask but they were punished because of the wrong doings of others, it sounds unfair but the restrictions were put in place because it seemed like something that would aid in solving the problem,
It's the same with the college admissions situation, just on a much more massive and impactful scale, like I said I don't personally think it's a great idea, but some people think it could aid in the solution to the problem of the massive financial racial disparity in the US.
Then you say race means nothing and it's only relevant when we want it to be but seam to completely ignore the fact that we are treated differently based on our race weather we want to or not, in an ideal world race would be nothing but a descriptor , but in the world we live in,
in the US, Asians are treated like sex objects and novelties, Hispanics are treated as parasites, Native Americans are treated like fairy tales and mascots, middle easterners, are treated like terrorists, black people are treated like a threat at all times, and white people are treated like they all have a superiority complex. Not to mention the fact that each community has massive financial disparities that massively impact their life experience from the jump and that people are actively killed because of race.
It would be nice to stop talking about race the way we do but it impacts everyone's lives in such a massive way, it's impossible right now.
You say my race analogy doesn't work because there are records of oppressed groups becoming stronge and thriving,
      1. My analogy was focused specifically on college and education in the US and the validity of the college admissions situation, not the overall hardships of the community's, so it works fine for what I was talking about
But since you brought it up 2. If you're point is we have no excuse because other groups have made it, you have to realize that the only way to do that is through claiming your own land and resources and building a community you' re self, or through war.
In the case of black people we've tried the former, in the US post slavery, we had a thriving town that we built our selves and It was very rich and had good education.
But of course it couldn't last, not because of the fault of the residence, but because the white people at the time just didn't like to see us thriving, and you know the quote, and if you don't now you do, "white woman are the biggest threat to black lives",
so somebody accused a black man in the town of assaulting a white woman, i don't know if the accusation was real or fake, but I do know that somehow that accusation led to them sending in military plains to burn down the whole city, like I said I don't know if the accusation was real or not (doubt it) but even if it was, do you really think it was worth burning down an entire city?
Either way, obviously the survivors had know we're to go and couldn't afford to leave the country so they were forced to go back to the racist system that was geared against them, to survive.
(look up black Wallstreet if you don't believe me)
And when it comes to war, not only are we not in the position to do so but a large majority of black people generally don't hate white people nore do we want revenge, we just want to be treated equally and have equal opportunity, not better, so obviously a race war just isn't what we need or want,
and this goes for the African tribe analogy, if the two tribes are equal in the end, yes it would be wrong because it's not about revenge it's about being equal, and black people on average have a much worse life experience in the US compared to white people, so if this wasn't the case I would say the the college admissions thing is 100% wrong instead of just about 65%.
you say that i think that white people are the boggy man and caused all problems, and that at one point we all suffered,
I understand white people didn't create every problem, i don't think white people are particularly evil or anything, honestly I think if any race were in the position that white people were in at the time that led to all of this they would have done all the Same horrible acts, they just so happened to be in power.
But the fact of the matter is, in the US, the actions of white people have caused a majority of the hardships that POC face in the US,
they have, committed literal genocide of the Native American people and reduced them to 1% of the population in their own country,
they created the model minority myth in order to separate the Asian communities from other POC'S and then fetishized them to hell, treating ther women like nothing but sex objects and them as a whole as just a novelty,
and for black people, during slavery, people made a group called the slave patrol that they would use to recapture and torment run away slaves, long story short that group is the origin of modern day police,
now I doubt very many officers are aware of this history not even the blatantly racist ones, but it doesn't seem unlikely that a group that has origins in the sole purpose of oppressing black people would have some residual prejudice twords black people, like the 3× statistic i brought up in my other comment, obviously since they treat black people as a much higher threat than everyone it continues to heavily negatively impact our community by making our incarceration rate much higher including wrongfull conviction and and much harsher unnecessary harassment that leads to police brutality which leads to more wrongfull killings by police to black people,
the also did red lining witch made it very difficult for our community's to develop financially, leaving many of our communities por, the also heavily focused on our community's disproportionately during the war on drugs, and giving us far higher sentencing than white people for the same crimes, obviously someone in prison can't help improve the community,
(Other POC that I both mentioned and didn't mention obviously have had it far worse than my statement has portrayed, it's out of ignorance and I apologize, I'm black so obviously I am far more aware the hard ships we have and do deal with.)
In other words i don't think white people are the boggy man, but we POC have been fucked from every orifice and then left in a horrible state by white people simply because we have different skin color or features, and all the fucking they did to POC left them in a very wealthy position in every aspect, so i don't think it's unreasonable to say that some of the criticism they get is warranted especially since there are people that will try and deny and downplay the hardships white people have and still do coughs, and i don't think it's unreasonable to say that their community as a hole can take a small hit to help us out since it won't be detrimental to them and since they put us in this situation.
I'd like to also add, yes I am aware that the hardships POC face isn't 100% one sided, there is definitely somethings we bring onto ourselves,
FX once again I am black so I can say for us our crime rate really is higher then other communities, not by the massive margin racists will make it out to be, but by a notable extent, and when I see things like the whole PPP lone situation, it jenuinly hurts to see cuz I know it isn't helping our situation in any way shape or form,
But once again it's kind of hard to acknowledge this with out acknowledging the fact that income inequality has a direct corilation with crime rates in communities, and we were put in this poverus state by a third party who hated us for just existing.-

Do they get the difference between race and color I mean if you make fun because of their color the maybe you are color judgemental (made up word) if you hate someone because of their routes then you are racist I mean people with the same color can be racist towards people with the same color but diffrent origin like example:that german guy is harassing that person because he is irish

Amethyst actually isn't technically an alien. She was created on earth, so by definition, she's a native of Earth. And therefore, she's not an alien. I suppose she's from an alien origin. But that's like two Mexicans having a child in America. By definition, that child is American.

  • @just_a_tepig3611
    @just_a_tepig3611 3 роки тому +2

Could they not think of something better fir the amethyst psa then her and the two kids hanging out and then just being "pay attention to the fact im an alien!". Its reasonable to look into color as the reason as an act of violence and possible hate crime, but just hanging out and having to bring race and such into everything doesn't seem like a healthy way to live life.

7:00 I thought you were going to critique how she said "other people of color experience other kinds of racism" because the wording implies that being racist towards one group is different from being racist to another group. (Idk if I worded myself the best but that's the best way I could describe it). Personally, I would have gone with "Other people of color experience racism differently." This acknowledges how different groups of people have different experiences and does this without being so divisive. I could be completely off base and I apologize if this comment comes across as ignorant.

      @TuesdaysArt 3 роки тому

@@cup3872 Craig of the Creek (or even We Bare Bears) seems like a much better fit for these subjects, but Steven Universe is the more recognizable brand so I guess that's why they chose it. Granted, Craig of the Creek would be more recognizable if Cartoon Network did a better job at promoting it but they're pretty biased towards some shows over others if their scheduling is any indication.

    I’ll be honest here.
Yes, these PSAs are cheesy, but since when have PSAs not been? It’s hard to make one that’s both short and teaches the problem. As long as they’re trying to give a good message, I think it’s okay.

Racism is prejudice based on race. What people talk about when they say it's prejudice and power are the terms discrimination, persecution, and oppression. The crime you mentioned can be considered a hate crime, which is a form of persecution, but that doesn't make it less bad because it is not oppression. Really people need to stop trying to downplay the suffering of someone else because it doesn't reach a certain threshold. Treating pain like a high score is a good way to push people from any kind of empathy. After all why would you feel sorrow for others if you are told your own pain is worthless, even when you are drowning in it? Often times people relate to others through their own experiences, so their attitude about their experiences will shape their attitudes about the experiences of others. So what do these people think is going to happen when they keep trying to downplay the horrible experiences of others based on the groups they are a part of?

I physically can't unhear Squidward when I hear that song. But yeh, it sucks that a show previously about accepting people's differences and looking past the destructive nature of gems has regressed into just talking about "human problems" the steven universe future show is just less interesting it's avatar the last airbender all over again.
