  • Lady Liberty has come to represent the idea of America, freedom and opportunity to generations. "Sunday Morning" host Charles Kuralt presents the story of the Statue of Liberty as told by the experiences of immigrants arriving at New York Harbor, as well as by photographer Peter B. Kaplan, who documented the statue in amazing closeups; Richard Adler, who composed a suite in her honor; Elmo Leonardelli, a scaffolder who worked on its 1986 restoration; and Lee Iacocca, chairman of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. Originally broadcast on January 5, 1986.

Mom promised me when i was 8, saying we go to America to find your daddy. Now 36yrs. Later no daddy. For what’s worth i got my freedom and so much more. I love America❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️May God Bless Us All🙏🏼🙏🏼😊

My grandmothers family, Irish immigrants, came through those halls to America. My Grandfathers family, Germans after world war 1, came through that island. I try not to forget how lucky I am that they found a home here.

Some of the what the statue represents is under attack these days. Charles Kuralt's dialog is so memorable and so on point. Oh how I miss his sonorous voice each Sunday morning.

Was just as moving, my dad said, when he & his army buddies came into NY Harbor in late 1945 returning from the war in Europe. The pilot could have had the guys go through the Buttermilk Channel much closer to the Navy Yard, but too the long way around, west of Governor's Island, so the boys could see Miss Liberty.

Wait the people that came through Ellis Isand did not need visas. They simple had to buy their ticket for the ship and once they arrived the were processed. If they were healthy, and most important had some family member already in the US it was much easier to be processed. The only ones rejected were those that were seriously ill with illnesses like TB, Smallpox, or Mumps. Now it is a lottery system.

I couldn't help crying when I watched this video. However, the US doesn't welcome immigrates like it used to be. I would go in a heart beat if I am welcome.

Why is this not seen as an invasion but the people of latin America seeking the same things are? Why not reopen an immigrant center again like Ellis Island to welcome new immigrants.

@@MrLebowski1980 Don't you remember? Your president says the US is full... Not wanted, go home... Yet his own grandfather and current wife were immigrants. His wife's legal, his grandfather ILLEGAL..

So because trumps grandfather was illegal that means his supporters shouldn't worry about illegal immigration????.I think you will find that a lot of the likes on this video are from trump supporters who have no problem with the immigrants who came through Ellis island and made America what it is..BECAUSE IT WAS LEGAL.

    • @MrLebowski1980

So because trumps grandfather was an illegal, you think trump is a hypocrite for being anti illegal immigration????.?So if my grandfather was a drug dealer and made me and my family rich for generations, does that mean I would be a hypocrite for being anti drug dealing??????

@@MrLebowski1980 Oh, like the Kennedy's? Their grandfather/father were bootleggers who helped the Mafia come to power (LCN), you mean like that? Now their considered American Royalty? Yes, only in America...
