I'm an airline pilot. I fly into KLGA about once per week. Often, we get a fantastic view of the Statue of Liberty. As much as I may be flying a plane at that point, I always think about my grandparents coming through Ellis Island as immigrants from Italy. My grandmother was a seamstress and my grandfather became a longshoreman on the Erie Canal. My grandfather wasn't very sentimental, but my grandmother always told the story of the first time she saw Lady Liberty, and the relief she felt that the troubles of Europe were over, and that there were endless possibilities in America. I went to the crown as a kid - I vividly remember that never-ending spiral staircase, the inner straps, and being terrified how far the head was swaying in the wind. This was in the 1970's and I don't recall having to reserve tickets (I just assumed my Uncle bought the tickets the day of). But I guess after 9/11 it's changed a great deal. I remember the stairs going up and down very well. As a kid it was a fun adventure but now at my age, you couldn't pay me enough to walk those stairs! The only thing that topped that experience was in 2000, I attended the wedding of a friend and the reception was at Windows of the World in one of the top floors of one of the towers of the World Trade Center. It was so crowded at 12.00 I decided to have lunch first at one of the fastfoodjoints (and I don't like fastfood). Went up around 13.00, and after reaching the high of the pedestal, I was the lucky last one of that day to be allowed higher. So we climbed up with the spiral staircase, I took some photos with a onetime use camera (flash was so bad just one picture worked). Went up to the crown. After 9/11 I heard the statue became off limits, only the pedestal was still accessible. So this video surprises me that the statue has been made accessible again. But in my days, after the crown there was no option to climb into the torch. And there was no emergency elevator next to the staircase. Big surprise.

I have actually been in the statue of liberty's head, the view was gorgeous, I love the statue of liberty, the downside of it is that it takes about 20 minuets to climb up, and there is also a very long line to get through security then get on the boat and then finally arrive at the statue of liberty. Me and my family also went to the gift shop and I got a bear soft toy that looked like the statue of liberty, I called her Liby.
I remember going to the head in the late ’70s. The arm was closed off with a rope. It was a long slow trip up the stairs, and there were thermometers on the wall as we went up to show that it was getting warmer and warmer. There was a lady with a big butt right in front of me (I was a kid, so I guess I remembered what was at eye level!). When we got to the head, fresh air flowed in and there was a collective “Aaaaah” from the group.
THANK YOU for expecting the audience to know absolutely _nothing_ and then clearly explaining literally everything from scratch in such an eloquent, beautiful and visual manner that's both interesting _and_ engaging! I don't live in the US, and my geography skills are next to zero, so your visual explanation of where France is located, where in the US the statue is located, and all the details about the surrounding areas and the tour of the statue, were all *_perfect_* for someone like me who lacks knowledge in those areas. Your pedadogy and visual skills are on a whole 'nother level 😇💯
It _must_ smell like metal in there. Also, my fear of heights might stop me from reaching the torch, if it was open. I can climb long stairways, such as in a lighthouse, but long ladders are a no-go. I lose my cool after just 5 steps.

A Statue of Liberty can still be seen in Paris. It was covered with flowers years ago, because it's located next to the place where Lady Diana had her fatal accident.
The torch also doubles as a fantastic neutralizer to erase any unwarranted memories that us common folk may accidentally run into. Lol, any MIB fans I’m sure get that corny joke. Great video and thanks. I always wondered what it looked like inside the Statue and the reasons behind not having access to the torch area. Great work thank you
You cant, at night there are armed guards guarding the entire island every single night all year. You will have a new address for a while if you try to break in at night.
@@lilliehaylett2199 Nah, that's your typical American college student these days. They're convinced the United States is the worst place in the world to live even though they've never lived anywhere else. Sadly, we're raising some really stupid kids in America these days.
I recently read the excellent book, "Paris" by Edward Rutherford in which one major character is an iron worker who happens to work on both the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. It was fascinating as he also detailed the construction of each of these monuments, as well as the politics involved. Yes, just as you say and according to Rutherford, the entire statue was built in France, then dismantled and shipped to America. They also displayed it in Paris for a few months after it was built and before it was shipped over. It was up to the Americans to build the pedestal on which it sits. He also said that the cost of the pedestal was paid for by donations. I recommend reading this very interesting novel. I visited the Statue of Liberty many years ago, in 1978, I believe. At that time there was only one price and everyone climbed to the top. But... that meant the climb was very slow because each person stopped at the crown to look out for a while. It wasn't too hard to climb but I was young then. LOL!
I've been here once, tried to get crown tickets but they were sold out for the time I was meant to be in NYC so I only got base tickets for me and my family. Still an excellent experience! They still let me take a peek up the stairwell to the crown for the hell of it, cool to see in this video how the top of it looks. My mother is claustrophobic and has an anxiety attack whenever she's in such a situation. So she avoided the elevator in favor of the stairs because she figured she'd feel better about that. Boy was she wrong! We went up about 5 stories with no windows or doors or a comprehensible way of knowing how far you've been or have to go. She started panicking and wanted to go back down but the side we were on is only meant for going up! So my brother and I had to assist her and reassure her that everything would be alright. She got relief with the few windows we did come across and I think there was a gift shop about halfway up. By the grace of God, she made it to the top of the base though. Going back down wasn't as bad for her, but overall, it was a cool experience for us all. Oh she's also afraid of heights... so yeah...
Oh yes! As I age, I discover a mild to moderate sense of claustrophobia and vertigo that I never had before. Just viewing the torch access here made me a touch queasy.
To those of you wondering why people aren’t allowed to go up on the torch anymore even though it was fixed, and they replaced the torch The torch was repaired/replaced during the 1984-1986 restoration. Any areas damaged were “shored up” that were not replaced in the arm and the structure within is still used to replace bulbs (now LED lights) when they need to be replaced. From 1886-1916 people could request admission to the torch level but it was left up to the lighthouse bureau keepers to allow access. Most people were denied access because of the dangerous climb required. If you were physically fit, worked on ladders regularly, etc., etc. you might be allowed to climb with a lighthouse keeper as guide with you. The problem is that the only access is through a platform at the shoulder of the statue which is on the downside staircase of the double helix stairs of the Statue of Liberty. Currently this area is under lock and key (gated with video surveillance) for the Liberty Island maintenance crew to access.
The american people gave us (french people) 3 little statues for thanks One of them is in the river Seine in an island in Paris. An other one in a park, jardin du Luxembourg in Paris also. I don t remember where is the third one. I hope our frienship will last for ever and sorry for my english.
@@thierryclm7804 No they did not, these 3 statues are french and always have been. One of them is even older than the one in NYC and was used as a model. They gave the replica of the the torch you see at "le Pont de l'Alma".
I climbed up to the crown in 1993 and loved every minute of it. Definitely not the easiest climb, but very well worth it if you have the chance. I didn't get to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, sadly, but I got to stand under it and feed the ducks. I've always thought the connection between the two was pretty cool.
I went up the Statue of Liberty in the early sixties and only up to the crown the public could go. There was no elevator then and there was another staircase going down. Even then you couldn’t go up to the torch. So…
Same here, my parents brought me to the statue in 1993. I was 4 years old and what I remember is I had to take rests so many times along the stair to the top and people passing me but I managed to get to the crown. I’m from far away in Indonesia and hopefully can visit the statue one more time. Thanks for the animation that recalls my memories back then.
I went in November, 1992. Saturday the 14th of that month, to be exact. On my way up the stairs I saw a bloke coming down who seemed to be having a devil of a job maintaining his stance. It was only on my way down that I realized why - since I had to come down in a similar posture. I still don`t know what it is that causes this, though.
This is one of my favorite UA-cam videos I've seen in a while. I can tell how much effort was put into both the animation and the research of the design and history of the statue of liberty. It is truly awesome to see such amazing things that humans have made, like the statue of liberty. *sigh* I miss traveling so much lol. I will definitely be sharing this video with some people I know.

For well over a century, the French were our buddies. They sided with us during the Revolutionary war, sending us supplies and personnel - that's why there are so any things named after Lafayette in the United States. They were the first country to recognize the United States as a nation. Nations used to do things like that. The main reason the photographic process caught on so quickly is because the French government bought the process from Louis Daguerre, gave him and the surviving heirs of his partner a huge payout, then released the process to the world as a gift from the French nation. They deliberately chose to not patent how photography worked. Can you imagine any nation today discovering the cure for cancer saying, "We're giving this away because it's too important to make a bundle of money from. That would be greedy!"
@@Vukan.Kos. Yeah. I can see that. The statue arrives in New York.
How did you get in don’t mind me asking
I remember going to the head in the late ’70s. The arm was closed off with a rope. It was a long slow trip up the stairs, and there were thermometers on the wall as we went up to show that it was getting warmer and warmer. There was a lady with a big butt right in front of me (I was a kid, so I guess I remembered what was at eye level!). When we got to the head, fresh air flowed in and there was a collective “Aaaaah” from the group.

To those of you wondering why people aren’t allowed to go up on the torch anymore even though it was fixed, and they replaced the torch
The torch was repaired/replaced during the 1984-1986 restoration.
What a wonderful gift from the French... Thank you, France!! This kind of friendship exchange doesn't happen anymore...

@@paradhoax What is your problem with France?

It's crazy to think France paid for, designed, built, and gifted this to the US in the 1800s.
An iconic gift tbh 👏
Beware of Greeks baring gifts
No no no. You see this was a failed Trojan horse by the French.
