On one street corner in London, an old man in a chicken suit invites people to throw eggs at him for money. Soon he becomes an online video sensation, and people come out in droves to pay for eggs and toss them at him, all while he remains stoic.
Little do they know that the chicken man is named Ernie, a lonely widower trying to make his way through the tangle of grief that has immobilized him since his wife passed away. Together the couple accumulated a nice sum of money to enjoy retirement together. But now Ernie is at a loss on how to use his nest egg without his beloved, kind wife... until his world collides with a precocious and resourceful little girl trying to win an egg decorating contest so she can buy her single mom a present for her birthday.
This charming yet emotionally grounded dramedy -- directed by Lucy Patrick Ward, written by Lee Sutton and produced by Martina Silcock -- could sound overly twee or whimsical on paper. But through understated yet confident directing and intelligent and emphatic writing, it achieves a remarkable balance in tone that manages to be simultaneously sardonic, heart-warming and profound.
One of the film's chief strengths is how it doesn't shy away from the casual minor cruelties that people can inflict upon one another, whether it's the glee that people take in hurling eggs at an old man or how little girls can so easily destroy one another's hopes. The storytelling doesn't lean too heavily on these small acts of aggression, but instead lays them out in a frank, matter-of-fact way. The worldview is both realistic about humankind's self-absorption and small-mindedness, yet with a gentle, somewhat resigned acceptance for these foibles.
This astringent view of humanity is balanced by the attention paid to both Ernie and Amy, as the camera remains focused on the inner experiences and travails of its two sensitive and empathetic main characters. Balancing multiple characters can prove tricky for any film, but especially in the compressed narrative scale of the short film format. But here the storytelling has a nimble ease, brisk pacing and a judicious and economical sense of character.
It also knows when to pause and slow down, especially as we watch Ernie grapple with his still sharp sense of grief and loss. Actor Paul Copley brings these moments to life in a truly moving, grounded way, anchoring us in the very real pain he is dealing with -- which makes the unfolding of his meeting with Amy all the more lovely to unravel, as two similarly yearnings, kindly souls finally encounter one another.
THE NEST EGG sidesteps sentimentality by stopping the story just as Ernie and Amy meet, though we assume the same spirit of generosity and benevolence that animates them both will connect them together.
But the story's real power comes from watching two genuinely good-hearted people maintain their humane spirit in the face of the world's indifference and low-grade meanness. A man in a chicken suit having eggs thrown at him seems silly and foolhardy at first, but in the end, it is a powerful metaphor for the courage and endurance it takes to face life's difficulties and keep standing aloft with moral principles intact -- with a little help, support and recognition by like-minded souls. - Фільми й анімація

If someone were to start throwing rocks at him, this story would've gone into a dark one.
Maybe someone's gonna make that kinda story?

Amongst the general cruelty of human beings, it might be possible to stumble across compassion.
Good people are always out there.
Need eggs to make a good Omeleto.

You can find kindness in all different types of people young and old
Even them boomers
I didn't know they made happy short films.
Happier than others I guess
The story is about the search for the few kind, gentle & loving person left in this world. The world is full of mean bullies, from little girls at grade school, to mean act or slander on people on the internet as entertainment. As people came from all over to throw eggs at him, and he watched his video on the internet went viral and the views soared, he had to resigned himself into believing that his search for kindness could almost be futile.
Thanks for that breakdown
That made no sense. I assumed that he was raising funds for something. Even if people gave him the dollar/pound with no egg throwing, then he still wouldn't be happy.
Also, I'm still no clear on the role of the younger fellow.
At last a film that made me feel happy inside. Most the films on Netflops are grim tales of misery, this gave me the feeling of hope. There’s not much of that around at the moment, it’s all violence, fast cars, big muscles, goblins and superheroes that aren’t that super. The chicken man is a superhero.
I completly agree. I have been thinking and saying for quite some time, if "this" was the worse kind of things that the people of the world let into their entertainment, how much better the world might be.
@Uchiha Recker Is what you are having difficulty in understanding have to do more with what happened in the movie? Or simply with my response to the movie and @Nicholas Duckneies comment?
Concerning my response to his comment; I was simply saying that if we all would limit what we allow into our lives as we are able to, to positive things, encouraging things, like this movies, then there should be alot less negativity and problems in and from people to one another. Seems possible.
As far as if there is some confusion about the movie: I would say that this older rich man, who wanted to make sure that he had at least someone who he could have confidence to leave his finances and worldly goods to, that he would not regret doing so. So, he thought of this very unusual way on one street corner to seek to fullfill his need to find such persons or at least a person. And, he believes he has found this kind of person in this very young girl, who want to just pay for a egg to make a art project to possibly pay for a gift for her mom. I hope this reply helps you.
=0) God's Peace & Joy unto you. (0=

Damn. Even if it meant I’d give money to him, I wouldn’t throw and egg at him. I’d feel pity and give him a dollar instead of paying
Isn't giving a dollar counted as paying?
Americashit69 No, because I’m not throwing an egg at him. There is a difference between paying and giving. When I pay I get something in return
Giving a dollar would be giving less than he was asking for. Since it cost £1 to throw an egg.
Luke Askew that’s facts. No dollars in the UK..
Luke Askew Ah, sorry. I didn’t notice it was UK money.
My heart sunk when the woman said "perv" to the man

Now he might have a friend after this.

Reminds me of an old Chinese folk tale of a demigod looking for an apprentice, the demigod disguised himself as a old man with a food stand selling sweets: 1 sweet was a dollar, 2 was for 2 dollars, but for 3 sweets it was free. People flocked to get free sweets for days, but only one young man came by and asked for one sweet. When prompted why, the young man replied he couldn't bear to see the old man being taken advantage of. The old man, finding what he was looking for, revealed himself and also the ingredients of his sweets - the people had been eating dirt all along. He then proceeded to take the young man to become his apprentice.
Y'all asking why the old man in this short would choose this method of finding someone to give the 3 million to need to chill, it's just a film.

Wait i just realized
My boi gerome,
I love that it's not forced. It's enough to know what's going to happen and why, and is a sweet story and uplifting. Made better by the lack of forced exposition! Great short!!
Even though he wanted people to throw eggs at him I still felt really bad for him.
I don’t know why but anything with old people makes me cry
Please tell me there’s a part two , this was such a sweet and heart warming story ! I felt bad to watch him get egged so much and how hardly anyone felt bad to do it

Loved this film. It's really inspiring. I'm trying to get into making short films but have nothing to make them besides my phone and a camera. Just wrote my first story for a short film I want to make with my friends.
I know nothing about making films but I have a little life experience under my belt and I want to encourage you to just do it. Just do it with what you have right now and figure it out as you go.
There have been incredible films made with nothing more than a camera! You have your passion, and that's what's needed most of all--far more than any fancy equipment! That's just extra! It's your unique voice that people want to hear, after all, and your passion is what will make that voice shine through! Figure it out as you go, and just go for it! And, most importantly, have a wonderful time doing it!
Thats a bit elaborate plan isn't it? Some random vegan couldve walked up to him mad at people wasting eggs and he would've given them 3 million dollars
Yea this was kinda silly tbh
@Jack Cassidy McCarthy my utmost heartfelt apologies, my good sir. Have a good day
Well I don't think that's the kind of kindness he was looking for
@Jack Cassidy McCarthy I didn't even notice he said "dollars" instead of "pounds" until you pointed it out. Somehow, though, I think I would not mess with someone named "insane zombieman".
Aww that was sweet, so all I need is to look out for an elderly gentleman doing something similar to this lol x
This channel has given me so much that i can't thank enough for. Still...THANK YOU FOR TEACHING ME BEAUTIFUL THINGS!

BRISTISH ACCENT BY THE GIRL ❤
That was wonderful
Loved this...because I was and still am that empathetic child.
Only heartless people can give this a thumbs down. 5 sorry individuals so far. Beautifully done!!!!
I think it might be because of the British English... and they didn't even provide subtitles. Personally, I liked before even watching, it's Omeleto, of course. But I almost hit the dislike button halfway through it because it was unbearable. I kept going back to finally understand a conversation. Apart from that, amazing acting from everyone.
Great message
The name Omeleto filament makes sense.

imagine going about your day in london then seeing an old guy dressed in a chicken costume with a suitcase of eggs
I think this is my favorite one yet.
The ending music piece is gorgeous, quite sad in a deep feeling way. When the lil girl says, "Can you help me?" The man smiles and the melody...Jim O'Rourke???
If I saw a guy with a full cart of eggs walk up to my register, I wouldn't charge em.
You'd lose your job, but ok.
Why not?
Great film!!!
I mean, why is the egg cover so cute??
The chicken man plays Daisy's father in law in downton abbey. No one throws eggs at him then I think. He's very kind in that movie series too
Awww that's how it ended!? I was expecting to see the girl proceed to winning the egg competition
I'll let you in on a secret: she does win it!
