Affordable housing yes, but your income the money your earn is going to the state , which make it even harder for a middle to low income person to afford anything. It winds down to politics. The homeless crisis started in the 1960's. As a country, we started to view psychiatric hospitals as prisons for the mentally ill. The movie, One Flew Over The Coo-coos Nest came out. Long term psychiatric hospitals were closed. A move was made to community based facilities which also eventually close. Patients were discharged to the streets. With no place to send them, the numbers have grown exponentially. Sure, a portion are solely financially disadvantaged but most suffer from very severe mental illness. Mental illness tends to combine with drug and alcohol dependency.
State run mental hospitals still exist all over California - they’re ran by Department of State Hospitals if you want to google. Since you’ll be on google already, you should probably look into the horrible abuse and warehousing of peoples that occurred when institutions were at their highest. I’ve worked in one as a nurse - there is almost no treatment, no counseling, no activities, just med time and a shoddy tv in the corner of a white room. Being mentally ill is not a crime or illegal. With the same money you could spend trying to hospitalize everyone so you don’t have to see them, we could also put that money towards actual healthcare and housing in the community
@@pattymayocakesI have also seen where they are housed, trust me what you described sounds 10 million times better. Housing is not an issue, proper care facilities need to be provided. Housing doesn’t solve anything, them on the street definitely doesn’t solve it, like you said they deserve better, so the only option is to bring back care center for mentally ill and addicted individuals. However, nowadays anything anybody does is wrong so here we go. I welcome you to come to certain parts of Vallejo, Oakland, San Francisco and see it in person for only a day not more than that and then see which option is better. Housing or treatment.
@@bestoor I live in Vallejo, girlie pop, born and raised. I’m a social worker in the Bay Area. Did you think I was just writing this out of my ass? We have state mental hospitals. @@pattymayocakes my understanding is that nurses were not paid enough and the mentally ill patients were out of control so i am guessing it led to resentment and the nurses getting desperate to control them, which always leads to mistreatment. Nurses who deal with these types of people need to be paid more and have more staff support.
Compassion does not work, the homeless are mostly mentally ill and or addicted, who would "choose" to be homeless, they are being "asked" if they want shelter, WTF no choice take it or keep moving.
The lack of affordable housing should be a key consideration in the zoning laws, but California has quite a few regulations (many that don't make sense) and San Fransico in particular makes it difficult to build enough apartments. Unfortunately, one major contributor to homelessness that is not talked about is how we build our cities, specifically putting emphasis on sustaining and building more suburbs and parking lots.
That said, not everyone is ready to be housed, so mental health must be accounted for, but we have to be careful when we talk about the homeless, because there are two groups of people. Those who recently lost housing and those who have not been housed in a long time. They require different approaches and strategies to fix.

@@taxicamel I don't disagree with that. I am not aware of Friedenbach, but that google search was illuminating, haha. I am not a proponent of blank checks to solve the homeless crisis. Nor do I think that there are not many ways to make additional cash to afford housing. I believe everyone can make something of themselves no matter the circumstances. I know being an employee of one of those cleaning companies is a terrible gig that does not pay well and that in itself is a bad choice. I also point out in my comment that some people are just not ready to be housed. The drug issue is its own issue, because that is not economic, and has so many layers to it that can't be discussed here. That said, what I am a proponent of is actually instead of focusing only on trying to house people by building shelters, we instead just make some better policy discissions that lower the cost of housing for everyone. That's better for the majority of people that are homeless, because they were fine until they got priced out of their current apartment, and it also helps make the city actually financially sustainable, since improving density will increase tax revenue while also requiring less utility maintenance. I know in Canada, it is against the law for the city to operate in the red, but here in the US, we do that all the time. I don't know if you have ever been to San Francisco, so just look at a satellite view of it. It is insane how much light residential there is.

Why is it that every time we talk about homelessness we talk about high cost of living. Yes, it’s expensive to live in California but not all of California. In certain counties not too far away San Francisco a 4 bedroom beautiful home is around 2000. Please don’t tell me that 4 people cannot rent that place and come up with 500 a month each working even minimum wage. Homelessness is an issue that is driven primarily by drugs/mental illness. Yes, maybe 20-30% and that is being generous need immediate assistance and trust me we have those assistance available throughout the state. Stop coming up with excuses for individuals that use drugs, do crimes and get free money from the government in the meantime and also destroy most beautiful areas of the city. The amount of opportunities in United States to make money and a have a simple life is abundant. Most of California from LA to San Francisco is unrecognizable from 50 years ago. Remove all drug addicts and people with mental health issues from the streets and trust me you won’t see much homelessness on the streets anymore and the ones you see will have more than enough shelters and resources that they truly need. It’s a very simple issue yet we have turned it into this big mess because soo many non profits and organizations make so much money from this issue. I promise you that the person in this video will lose her job and income if homelessness disappears as well. So stop being brainwashed, focus on the fact that these individuals need a different type of help not money or housing. Don’t let them waste your tax money on things that doesn’t help. All homeless individuals deserve a better life and that comes with proper mental and drug addiction help not housing and cost of living. If that was the case all people doing minimum wage should be homeless. Yes, costs are high but opportunities are high as well. We live at a time that we can achieve almost anything we dream of, yet we focus on such minor and wrong things brainwashed by the individuals that want to make money out of a situation like this. Build care centers rather than homes and clean up the streets for god sake.
That's one of the things when you're homeless. There's going to be people who will ask you to move on. So, be prepared for that. Also, they're not going to stick around places that are hostile to them. With that aside, there should be housing for them. And an avenue to get treatment for drug issues, if they have it. "Unhoused Americans" is correct instead of "Unhoused Californians" because a lot of other states bus homeless to CA which would be easier to deal with if CA wasnt also a state that sent more Federal Tax dollars to the Federal Government than is returned in Federal funding back to the state. That being said there are issues related to zoning and real estate lobbying. Also for solving the problem some non-profits are just in it for the funding to pay the non-profit execs more than they would make otherwise
May I ask where you retrieved the information on this? I researched google and found an article titled "Bussed out How America moves its homeless" by the Guardian and it shows quite the opposite of what you stated.
States with more expensive housing tend to have proportionally higher homeless populations. Warmer weather tends to go along with higher housing costs. California has the highest rate of homelessness. Most migrate from Texas, Nevada, and Arizona. All three of which are listed in the top ten in homeless rates. Arizona is too hot in the summer, up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Texas makes being homeless a crime, those that don’t end up in prison end up on buses that ship them out along with migrants (Greg Abbott sent more than 10 buses transporting migrants to Denver in the last week). Rents which have increased more than 20% in Southern Nevada since 2020 have also forced families out of their homes. One third of the homeless population of the US and Californians pay more than they get from the federal government.
Those aren’t homeless Americans they’re illegal immigrants. Stop conflating issues. Denver is not in California, which is the point of discussion. Colorado voted To be sympathetic to illegal immigrants, and Denver voted to be a sanctuary city.
I am a resident in california and I am so sad that even though I am in a profession working with children, that I still face the one or two more rent hikes before I have to fear becoming homeless. your essential worker professions do not come close to the amount for rent. and unless they begin creating housing for people with less than a 6 figure salary, I see all these beautiful apartments going up over the last ten years that only go as low as 3000 , for those working in the tech industry. So only one market for one type of worker, but those workers need to be able to having people running the stores they like to shop in, to have teachers and child care workers to care for their children and people running their entertainment. so... minus that all you have is tech with the people they need... sleeping outside their homes... this is reality, it is not all drug and mentally ill ... this is hitting every one. It a farm and we work when we can. He's into it with child support. So the law is on him to work and pay on it. He never will get out of the mess he's in. He works and pays it. Not to mention a lot of homeless people don't want sobriety they want to be high they want to be on the streets. You can only help people that want help.
California spends more on homelessness, by a huge margin, than any other state for super mediocre results. Failing to mention the fentanyl crisis and wave of addiction sweeping cities like San Fran is almost journalistic malpractice. High cost of living is not the main driver for increasing visible homelessness and the rampant unmitigated drug use and crime we have seen on our streets. Also even if you want to focus on rent costs, you have to address the incredible amounts of nimbyism and overregulation of California's housing market, which directly limits the ability of people to construct new housing and apartments.
Yep - and we've given $116 billion dollars to Ukraine. That money could have easily eliminated the homeless crisis in America 🇺🇲 and still had money left over.
Complex? Build affordable housing, Its pathetic how its framed like its some kind of technical challenge, there is plenty of money but its just going to the few who already have the most which ofcourse are the ones who say its "complex".....What a surprise.
You never see migrants even undocumented living like this in CA. Yes - it's expensive but there are plenty of ways to earn an income to pay for housing.
Of course, homelessness and the cost of living are linked. Many homeless people even have jobs. Substances often add to homelessness. It's a cycle, but it's not the cause of the problem.
That's the price you have to pay for being so obsessed with your political party. You should support a leader who really cares about his constituents and not just a few!
The homeless problem is rooted in the 1950’s when it was a federal law that minorities could not live in the suburbs. So, whites moved out of the cities and into the suburbs in mass which created sprawl. This in turn caused the city centers across America to be a place where a lot of minorities lived, and therefore more crime, and generally people didn’t want to move there. So, with less investment in housing and infastructue in the housing within cities to create the density level that was necessary to build a robust transit system, what we have now is a spread out sprawl and expensive housing, which according to the law of supply and demand created homelessness.

Right. Everyone that's homeless needs rehabilitation. Every city in America has a homelessness problem and it's going to get worse. The US sends 3B every year to Israel, which could build 15,000 modest homes in America. According to the IMF, Israel's GDP in 2023 was estimated to be $564 billion. Israel's GDP per capita in 2023 was estimated to be $58,270, which is the 13th highest in the world. So why are politicians sending taxpayer's especially poorer taxpayer mone, to Israel that enjoys a higher standard of living than the US? and no matter what party is in office democrat or republican they all donate taxpayer dollars that no one approved or voted for.
The big problem is the state's minimum wage even with a full time and a part time job does not pay enough after all taxes to afford the average one bedroom apartment

This means even though MOST people KNOW the problems with drugs ....YOUNG KIDS ARE STILL STARTING USING DRUGS!!!! WHY????? LA has a city budget of $12.8 billion under Mayor Karena Bass, with a population of almost 4 million people. Personally, I think SF needs to seriously slash the budget back to $5-7 billion. There are too many City employees, too many City departments, too many bloated budgets, and too many nonprofits with questionable bookkeeping and program outcomes. There is no logical reason for a city of 900,000 people to have a budget of $14-15 billion.
Why does the gov need to foot the bill for homelessness in other states? California has plenty of houses and leaders that WANT to help the homeless ,how many of them are taking homeless into their homes?
A lot of other states bus homeless to CA which would be easier to deal with if CA wasnt also a state that sent more Federal Tax dollars to the Federal Government than is returned in Federal funding back to the state. That being said there are issues related to zoning and real estate lobbying. Also for solving the problem some non-profits are just in it for the funding to pay their execs $$$

My wife and I have spent over 25,000.00 in attorney fees trying to save his home. There is a lot more to this homelessness issue than meet the eye.
I live in the Coachella Valley and I noticed in the past 10 years, the city was allowing buses and buses of homeless people to be dropped off in my city and the entire area became a place with more homeless people on the streets who would camp in empty desert lots, or in vacant parking lots near grocery stores and banks, who were not really asking for money but just sitting there with their shopping carts filled with their belongings, and trying to drink water from the public pipes...there's no real structure in place to effectively help people get out of homelessness: it's a sign of society degradation and diminishing. Where do these people go the restroom where they're not "customers" buying things in their stores...where do they sleep when most shelters are at full capacity? These people need homes, a job, money, food, medicine, and they need better help...not empty promises or dead ends.

It's not hard to figure out that the average rent cost for 1 bedroom is 1,600 per month. If you take $15.00 per hour at 32 hours aweek take home pay without taxes being taken out is $1,920 per month. The wages in 2023 and the cost of living don't match up like they did in 2012. People are struggling to pay a grand a month on rent.

You need to tell your house flippers and gentrifiers to put public housing back..
The other states has to stop sending their homeless to CA, that's the problem
That's one of the things when you're homeless. There's going to be people who will ask you to move on. So, be prepared for that.
Also, they're not going to stick around places that are hostile to them.
With that aside, there should be housing for them. And an avenue to get treatment for drug issues, if they have it.
If they don't want to respect the place they're in: The town would have no choice but to ask them to move on.

Plenty of states bus their homeless to the west coast. Many of them land in Portland and Seattle.
The other states have plenty of homeless too.
May I ask where you retrieved the information on this? I researched google and found an article titled "Bussed out
How America moves its homeless" by the Guardian and it shows quite the opposite of what you stated.
We have half of the entire country’s homeless population here!
I wonder what it would look like, if the government made minimum wage.

Let me be honest. No bad mouthing. I have a homeless guy living on my mom and dad's old place. He's in good health. I have an old house he lives in. I don't ask rent. He helps me some. It a farm and we work when we can. He's into it with child support. So the law is on him to work and pay on it. He never will get out of the mess he's in. He works and pays it. Most in the West can work. They have an education. California I know has old military bases. They have fire problems. Thes people need work and a place to live. They can clean up the city's. Build fire lines. I've planted trees. They can to. Their is no need of Americans not having jobs. The new Commers are given money to get a start. These that are down need help. Some are vets. All can do something.

Its only complicated because you make it so.Take a step back and try to see how ridiculously simple it is. Complexity is not the problem. Bullsh!tting is.
This news reports gives over the fact that a lot of these homeless people are high on illicit drugs and are incapable of making rational decisions. Not to mention a lot of homeless people don't want sobriety they want to be high they want to be on the streets. You can only help people that want help.
It's actually not complex. The 'friendlier' the municipality is towards the homeless, the more homeless will come from unfriendly areas.
Ever hear of this place called Portland, Oregon? Case in point.
Send them to Ukraine. Solves both problems.
This would require that there would be a general interest in tackling homelessness as a problem.
Imagine if every missile or tank sent to ukraine is instead used to build houses. Houses would be alot cheaper
Complex? Build affordable housing, Its pathetic how its framed like its some kind of technical challenge, there is plenty of money but its just going to the few who already have the most which ofcourse are the ones who say its "complex".....What a surprise.
But in L.A the city approved 14 millions for ilegal emigrantas, to pay lawyers??
You never see migrants even undocumented living like this in CA. Yes - it's expensive but there are plenty of ways to earn an income to pay for housing.
You can't find this situation in China and Japan. Shame on US.
Homelessness is not a rent problem. Rents are cheap in lots of other places in the country. Lots of substance abuse is the problem.
Well let's see the wealthy homeowners work these minimum wage jobs then..
Of course, homelessness and the cost of living are linked. Many homeless people even have jobs. Substances often add to homelessness. It's a cycle, but it's not the cause of the problem.

So, with less investment in housing and infastructue in the housing within cities to create the density level that was necessary to build a robust transit system, what we have now is a spread out sprawl and expensive housing, which according to the law of supply and demand created homelessness.
but but but White privilege
I think the state should have used those billions of dollars they wasted on the highspeed rail we don't need to come up with a real solution.
the issue is the amount of money being put into the problem - specifically where the money is going

But the red states can’t fix the problem either. All they do is migrate them to blue states
What I think most people don’t realize is that almost all of the homeless people in America, by whatever means relocate themselves to California that has better weather and then it makes it look like CALIFORNIA creates the problem, the reality is, is CALIFORNIA is paying for America’s homeless
What a joke.... all the funds go to the growing homeless-industrial-complex.... there's no incentive to solve the problem, but lots of incentive to make it worse #gravytrain
Drug addiction and outside migration of people from other countries and cheaper states thinking they are going to make it here without any skills or money. The vast majority of the people on the streets are either on drugs or transients or both.
Many are from out of state.
So minimum wage is $18 and rent is $3000? That’s the problem. Either the have to move or find rent that’s $1500.
Moving is expensive and not always possible, for many reasons. And finding affordable rent is getting harder and harder, for everyone. We're in a crisis.

One portion of this video, at 1:24 ..."Nellie Sorto" is commenting about working full time cleaning home and still not able to make enough ....while her daughter lays on a bed, eyes glued to a cell phone. We don't know how much truth there is to "working full time". To some people, working full time is working every day ....for a few hours. BUT ....what's will the cell phone? How much does it cost to buy and pay for monthly? The "argument" is between the minimum wage and the AVERAGE rent. YES ......the numbers are really tough .....but let's expect that the AVERAGE rent is NOT what a minimum wage person is going after in the first place. There are in fact rents for $2,000 very easily found AND these are very nice units. Looking/digging a very little harder and VOILA ....3 BEDS, 1 BATH, "furnished", "onsite laundry" ......$1,000 ......"9th Ave And Balboa Street, Inner Richmond".
YES, times CAN be tough but we all go through it one way or another. Many choose the wrong path ...and we all know who these people are. However, those that choose correctly and plan and work hard in their youth ....WITHOUT GETTING INTO TROUBLE .....like "single moms" .....which there are far too many ......it is NOT that difficult. LIFE MISTAKES CAN MAKE LIFE VERY HARD.
Sadly, people like Jennifer Friedenbach, with the gift of the gab, will talk and talk and talk .....and blame everyone under the sun for homelessness .....when in fact, she provides NO FACTS .....just RHETORIC. The FIRST questions that need to asked of EVERY HOMELESS PERSON .....IS WHY THEY ARE HOMELESS .....AND GET EVERY SINGLE DETAIL FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL''S SITUATION. Until that gets done and fully documented ....no one can come up with ANY working solution. Friedenbach's solution is throw money at the problem. This is NOT the solution for every homeless person. It MIGHT be for some .....but what about the rest?
All Friedenbach's talking, not once mentioned drug addiction. I live in Vancouver, Canada. We have very much "exactly" the same situation with "tent cities' being set up all over the place, on and along main streets for decades ....which are now classified a "slums" ...once the heart of a vibrant city 100 years ago, up to about 30 years ago. Also setting up in what used to be parklands that people would stroll through and have picnics. NO MORE .....NOT FOR 10 to 20 YEARS!! The same messes created. Trash everywhere. The majority of ALL these tent cities are drug addicts.
Just go to the intersection of "MAIN and HASTINGS" streets on GOOGLE EARTH .....and traverse west along HASTINGS street and look at all the GRAFFITI defacing what used to be store fronts. This was the HEART of Vancouver when the city was born and continued up to 1950's and 1960's ....and then things started to DEGRADE. This imagery is very old. It is worse today. There is NOTHING anyone can do about drug addicts. This imagery SHOWS drug addicts dealing with each other. Police avoid the areas because there is NOTHING they can do ....except wait for an overdose and attend if the paramedics run into a problem with others when they try to help.
I will make ONE point. Apparently homelessness in San Francisco makes up a third of the national count. WHY WAS THERE NO MENTION OF THIS FROM FRIEDENBACH? IS THERE NO DRUG PROBLEMS IN FRISCO?

Right. Everyone that's homeless needs rehabilitation. Every city in America has a homelessness problem and it's going to get worse. What isn't said in this video is the number of people that have to live with other family mambers because they can't afford to be on their own or just don't want to try.
They also don't look at the millions of Americans who are one month away from being homeless because of rent increases.

Stay off tax payer property …Build homeless shelter in desert far from city and suburbs.
Cali is way too expensive
