  • LNER A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' has been a staple part of mainline steam preservation for almost 50 years, but 2020 marks the end of her longstanding mainline service.
Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built in 1937 at Doncaster works, 60009 (originally numbered 4488) served the LNER and BR for 29 years, before being withdrawn in 1966, where she was purchased by John Cameron, making her one of the 6 A4 Pacifics to survive today. The loco spent her first few years of preservation in Fife, before returning to the mainline in 1973, where she has been a common sight on railtours around the country ever-since. She's now due to retire, with her mainline certificate now expired, and is expected to spend the remainder of her current boiler certificate running on the East Lancashire Railway.
