In my youth I frequently used to visit Hitchin on the East Coast Mainline, where it was always a great spectacle to see A4’s & other Pacifics plus V2’s hammering through in either direction. In 2002 ,I was briefly back in the U.K. & out of nostalgia visited Hitchin Station ,seeing electrics & diesels run through was a complete nonevent. I have always loved the steam loco. as one of man’s greatest inventions.
I used to see them all the time as a kid in Newcastle in the 60s. The thrill we used to get when one of these majestic engines came thundering past is, even to this day, an excitement second to none.
