- Once a year, a public road in Gladstone, New Zealand is closed off for the most hardcore racing event in the country. This is a mini Isle of Man TT style course up a winding mountain road, and riders get up to some insane speeds. Of course I brought the newest, fanciest Italian electric motorcycle to compete!

Mate, really glad u got out on it for this and had such a good time! As crazy as the bike is, the Ego+ is even moreso, and probably perfectly matched for this kind of race. That extra 40kph, aero, and pinned position would just add to the Ribelle experience on a race like this...but it would hamstring comfort and practicality in non-race applications. All the best for 1st of April!!!!!
Truuuue that. The Ego+RS would need an even more skilled rider for this place. The road is crazy bumpy and probably requires a custom adjustment just for this event. Hey if I don't get my license back soon I'll just have to do more track days!

Livin' the dream! It really isn't about the speed so much as testing what you and the bike are capable of without risking a Darwin Award. This is actually one of the reasons why I'm not particularly keen on a more powerful bike, the temptation to push the limits is why so many become organ donors, and I've pushed my luck enough times throughout my life the quota seems (almost) full.
Haha yep, a guy on an RC390 destroyed me. I really want to get a more skilled rider on the Energica just to see what it's capable of, because unless I get a million times better, I'll still be getting slow times.
Self-control is one of the most important bike skills. ;)

Man yes! An electric supermoto with DC fast charging would be amaaazing.
Getting very close to picking up a new Triumph Tiger 660 and as the accessories push the price closer to the Ego SS9 I keep wishing the Energica price was a little lower and they made something that's fully comparable in style for on road touring / adventure.
Tiger 660 does sadly lack the Ego's Cruise Control.
Next bike will be electric for sure but one last manual trans ICE vehicle for me.
What's good with these CCS zeros tho, may make me reconsider the SRS...

Races like these are all about steady pace. Peaking above 200 is all well and good but if youre slowing to 50kms around a sweeping corner, it just wipes out the gains...

Haha thanks! And yep, absolutely. I need way more practice and seat time on that road. It's a really difficult one. The fastest guy there ended up flying off the cliff (he's ok, but his bike isn't).

That was the traction control keeping me alive 😂 I wasn't brave enough to turn it down.
On the first run TC was going taatatataatatataatatatata 🤣. TC set at 6, really cuts waaaay too much power Sam, without really being safer than lets say TC4. If you go lower than 4 you might experience very brief split second tyre slippage, but nothing that the computer can't recover from.
The scary settings are TC1 (only if you know what you are doing) and Off (NOT recommended)

@@NewZeroland I understand, in time you will get used to it, as you know I'm a big advocate of getting out of TC6, which is like having the bike on rain mode. As I said, TC 4 is a good an all around setting 🙂

@@TheLrb12c thanks! Yeah the organizer gave us all a talk before the race to say that "the fast guys are riding within their limits.. their limits are just different than yours" haha. In the end it was just an awesomely fun day on a rollercoaster of a road and I can't wait to do it again!

Haha yeah I left TC on Level 6 and did not lower it all day. The bike wanted to wheelie so many times during that launch haha.

Very cool! Not sure I'm man enough to make runs like that. I have the windscreen on mine. I think it makes it more aerodynamic. Much less buffeting. I still don't like the noise they make. Oh well. They're awesome motorcycles.
Yeah riding alongside my wife, we were able to notice a huge difference between windscreen and non-windscreen bikes. Hers easily gets 10-15% more range than mine.

Wouldn't it be nice if you can somehow fast charge the bike from the Tesla between laps?
Could be a great solution also for off road trips where you tow the bike make a trail charge a bit and continue.
I'm looking into it! There HAS to be a way. Even if it's just from the 12V battery up from with a transformer or something.
@NewZeroland 1. U can do it from the 12V battery via inverter, but not sure how much power goes to the 12V,. Does nor look like much, in this case it will be a very slow charge.
2. Some one did it this way in the US,. He published it in social media. Tesla found out and revoked his battery warranty.
3. Hyundai Ionic5 has 3000W 220v inverter built in inverter the back seat. Tesla rwfuse to offer this option

Oh, do you wear earplugs? That wind through the helmet will definitely take its toll on your hearing and you will go quicker with earplugs too. It removes part of the visceral feeling of speed so it will let you push that much harder more easily.

Ok so it looked like a fun day no matter what. Few questions. You said the battery went yellow. Is that a SOC yellow or a thermal yellow warning? I thought I heard a pulsing at takeoff, was that traction control? Have they said anything about Teslas being able to buddy charge? IOW charge the bike off the car.
Great questions! Yeah that yellow battery was just a warning to plug it in soon because it was below 40%. I probably shouldn't have put that in but it seemed like an interesting moment 😂 No thermal warnings all day. The pulsing was traction control, yeah. It sounded ridiculous but I didn't want to turn it off because the bike wanted to pull wheelies non-stop. I've heard of people using the 12V battery from their Teslas with a step-up transformer, but not sure about the high voltage pack. THAT would be an amazing solution for an event like this.

This is without the optional windscreen right? I definitely think it needs a bigger screen - my 790 Duke certainly was massively improved with one.
Yeah my wife has the screen on hers and she gets about 10-15% more range.
