I never looked at it that way but I guess you could make that comparison except that Earl thought he was not a buffoon where dick Martin knew he was and played it that way.
I guarantee you kids today have no idea what that teletype sound is I worked at a radio station that had one 40 years ago that thing just spit out more cheap paper with nothing on it I'm serious it was like typing on institutional brown paper towels from a roll just constantly clack clack clack clack clack thank God we don't use that crap anymore
You’re a lucky man to remember these days nonetheless. That’s a sound that used to represent to us the ‘real’ and un-objective news coming down the pipe. That’s before Reuters and the AP started feeding us only what fit their narratives. Good days to be alive back then. Annoying sounds and all…. Glad we got to see it. 🙏
@@johnunkerman don't forget the bells that would go nuts if something was really important. Plus the style of writing...left out a bunch of superfluous connecting words that you had to supply yourself if you read it on air.

That sound effect was known as "Teletype Receiver" and came from the Major Records/Thomas J. Valentino library. Most of the time, SCTV played that SFX slightly sped up.
Earl's attitude in this edition sounded reminiscent of that of KGO-TV's "News Scene" main anchor (and executive editor) Van Amburg, as he told Mike Wallace in the "60 Minutes" piece "Local News: The Rating War" as aired March 10, 1974: " . . . that I do get involved, that I do solve problems, that we do things, that we get the old lady the house that she's been burned out of, that we get the money for the kid who's dying from leukemia, we get him an operation that he would not have gotten if we hadn't been here." I thought I heard at least one of those stories slightly and subtly rewritten for this sketch.
You know, and I think that I can speak for everyone, Floyd "The Most Trusted Man in America" Robertson is Fantastic. What a great talent and journalist. Earl "The Squirrel" Camembert is a Bum !!
RIP Joe Flaherty, one of my favorite sketches and I haven't seen it in a long time, thanks!
RIP Joe Flaherty
I have never seen this bit ! How ?
RIP John Candy , Harold Ramis , Joe Flaherty .
Happy Trails
Earl Camembert: There's a happy side to this story, we'll be back tomorrow.
RIP Joe. Thanks for everything!
WHAT???? When???🤮
R. I. H. Joe Flaherty
I feel bad for the crew, since they've had to restrain both Earl and Floyd on separate occasions.
Yup. Floyd just couldn’t handle Earl’s attitude of gratitude 😆
@@johnunkerman - Earl was a devotee of the Happy Talk style of news presentation, of which this was but one manifestation.
Joe played so many great characters. Love SCTV.
Count Floyd! Arrrrooooo!
This was genuinely funny!
Almost like a spoof on Laugh In's Rowan and Martin...which in itself was was hilarious on its on

@@hankkingsley9300 - Earl may have not thought of himself as a buffoon, but he also seemed to have no sense of humor.
Earl was more like Happy Talk on steroids, whilst Floyd was more old-school.
Joe was the funniest of the SCTV crew, who were all very funny.
30 minutes wildly funnier than 90 minutes of SNL !!!🤣
Sometimes they have room in this skit they are elbow to elbow.
Surprised the crew stopped Floyd from killing Earl.

Pot head vs Alcoholic ✌☺
😂
Happy Talk devotee vs. old school "need to know" newsman.
