Some HOT tips for the newbies; 1. It is difficult, but learning the keybinds to the game is the most important part to start playing, you can access these with the " ? " Key to view, or change them. 2. Warmth is what will kill most inexperienced players the fastest, either from the slowdown from frostbite, or frostbite itself as your travel to your destination. You can tear down the curtains from the windows to gain access to 4 invaluable resources: nails, sheets, long string, and a heavy stick. This let's anything outside see inside but most of the time in the EVAC shelter you are pretty safe. 3. You can craft a kaffiyeh with a sheet and a long string, which requires no tools, no skill, and is the easiest way to keep your head and mouth warm for the time being. If it's REALLY cold, you can wear 2. You can also wear the sheets themselves to cover your entire body and keep it warm, just make sure to take them off before fighting. 4. You can disassemble a sheet (or butcher it) if you have a pair of scissors or something sharp, you can get rags and a little thread. You can disassemble a rag with no tools to get about 80 threads, but it takes a long time. It's ALOT quicker to cut up the long string from another curtain into small strings, and those small strings into thread. 5. You can take those rags from the cut up sheet and make a bindle, it's the lil bag on a stick hobos carry, it's a passable storage device early on, and beats jean pockets by leagues. 5. A wonderful early weapon if you follow the tutorial above and get the makeshift hammer and screwdriver is the "Crude Sword". It's a fast and reliable weapon that requires 1 "2 by sword"(made with a 2 by 4 and something with cutting) and 4 scrap metal. It's a quick and dirty weapon that deals good damage, and hits fast. Only downside is that it requires 2 fabrication to craft. 6. If swords aren't your style, and dealing with the hassle of carrying something big and bulky like a stick or a sword isn't something you are able to do, another easy and efficient weapon is the "Nail Knuckles". They require no skill to make, and only something with hammering 1, like a rock or a pipe. Although they are a little resource heavy to start, they cost 16 nails, 4 long strings, and 1 wood plank, they are lightning fast to attack with, and allow you to use martial arts and brawling to your full effect, adding cutting damage to your attacks in addition to your unarmed damage. They are also small enough to fit in a almost any pocket, so they make for good travels. 6. Final tip. Protein rations are pretty okay to start, but they give you a pretty terrible mood debuff for a long time if you eat them more than a few times. It is much better to instead eat other demoralizing sources of food than to eat them since most "nasty" foods only demoralize you for a couple hours, where as the protein rations can demoralize you for days or weeks. Butter, mayonnaise, wild vegetables, dandelions, burdock, and acorns are a excellent food source early if you have nothing better, protein rations should be reserved for absolute dire straits.. OH AND THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP!!! before any playthrough, it's probably most important to set a goal for the character you are playing as. Cataclysm is a HUGE and expansive game that is alive and changing every day, literally. There are no end scenes, or any way to "save the world" so you have to conjure your own goals to make each game special in some way. It helps you learn and not get overwhelmed if you have something to work twords. One of my most fun playthroughs was playing as a photographer with a professional camera and I was trying to get a good or better quality picture of every monster I came across. Creating that catalog and picture portfolio was fun, dangerous, and required some thinking at times, proud to say I got an excellent picture of a Skeletal Juggernaut and lived to show it off. It really keeps each character fun, no matter how many times you challenge the game. Have fun newbies, and always respect the mighty moose, lest you fall to it's unstoppable might.
The last one is amazing. When I was getting bored, I was starting roleplaying runs, where I was making up the personality of my character and coming up with my own quests (for example, get to some specific house in the big city, to look for "my family"). It was pretty fun too
@@GreedyDrunk92 it definitely helps to avoid burnout and falling into a rut of building the same character and trying the same playstyle over and over.
I love the game, and I suspect they did this for reasons that make the mechanics of the game work better, but it's kind of ridiculous to have a weeks long debuff from eating protein rations. Like the world has fallen apart and you are lucky enough to be in a shelter, but you need to leave because the mountain of food given to you isn't tasty enough lol. It's so silly that it's borderline immersion breaking to me
One thing I'm beginning to realize is this game is built by the general public adding or modifying single features essentially by mailing in code like in a big company. Dwarf Fortress, crowdsourced.
It's very easy to add stuff, you don't even need to know how to code to make maps, design monsters, or add items, recipes, mutations, or lots of other things. If you ever find yourself wishing the game had something it doesn't, it might be worth throwing it together and submitting it to the github.

Not me re-watching your video 3~4 times writing down a notepad of steps on how to complete these actions so I'll have a basic 'DO THIS STUFF AT THE START TO SURVIVE!' list.
A note for beginners: when making the makeshift hammer, as shown in the video, it's possible to save a lot of time by getting "short strings", instead of thread for the recipe. A quick way to obtain this is by (B)utchering a long string, easily found by taking down some curtains by standing next to them and pressing "e" to (e)xamine it. In terms of combat, use "x" or ";" to check the movement cost of nearby terrain, as shown in the video. By kiting enemies over this terrain, you can attack once or more without risk of a counterattack, depending on the movement cost. Also, make sure not to wear anything incredibly encumbering on your torso when fighting, such as backpacks, so drop what you can before engaging in combat.
I know this is a comment on an old video and I hope you see it Worm Girl: I have been absolutely loving your playthrough and am on day three and absolutely enthralled with how you dramatize the game. @@mutantwormgirl That was excellent advice! I've been playing UnReal World for a few hours now and I've never had so much fun dying from infection! It's amazing how rich its simulation is, I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.
Thanks for this video. This is probably the most complex video game I've ever played, but your explanations are very helpful. Also, your voice is great to listen to.
I've been playing for a little while now, but I'm always looking for new CDDA content creators. You put together a very detailed script and have a solid speaking cadence and tone. I hope you make more!
This game is great but the UI is hard to remember especially after taking a long break from playing. This is a really helpful video! You explained everything so well, that I'm going to save this as a reference for any time I need a refresher on how to start playing again.
i'm coming back after not playing for over a year. things have changed so much it feels like a sequel. surprisingly i remember most of the keybinds. then again i've been playing off and on for 10 years, and keybinding is the one thing that hasn't changed much
Just a note for new players, you do not need to wait x minutes for the water to boil. You only need enough burn time to finish boiling the water(which seems to vary based on quantiy). Wormgirl did it to show it works, but you can go do other things such as read/craft etc.
Thank you for this video (and by now this entire series)! I'd been interested in CDDA for a while, but only started playing a few days ago. Played the tutorial, then managed to die in not-instant ways, so I take that as a plus. Now I'm watching guides to see what I've been missing. I'd been raiding the evac shelter's food supplies prior to my excursions, but it didn't yet occur to me to build crowbars and hammers out of the furniture there. Thanks to this guide, now I have extra ideas to consider!
Don't you just love this game! So glad I found your channel and it seems to primarily focus on CDDA. Also fantastic commentary, very pleasant to listen to

Discovered your channel from your Fear & Hunger videos. Excited to see you also have vids on CDDA! Always been interested in trying out this game, but the learning curve seemed daunting.
At the 15:00 mark it's worth noting that rags have been renamed to something else after this guide came out. I forget the new name, but it's something like "cotton patch" I think.
I usually go outside for a rock to use as a hammer instead of using a pipe as a hammer, because I am more used to the pipes not having hammering quality. But it would likely be safer to use a pipe, since you do not have to go outside. Still, either way you are going to make noise which might attract zombies if there are any nearby. That is part of why I like to check the map first, before I do anything, and then I will likely peek through the curtains (which allows you to see outside without opening the curtains by standing next to a window and using the e key and the direction key pointing to the window and then selecting the "peek" option) to see my surroundings before making any noise. Some people have mentioned tearing down the curtains, which I generally recommend against unless it is very important to have those resources and there is nothing nearby that might see inside the shelter. Besides, you can find those resources in houses, which will likely be one of the earlier buildings you explore. Anyway, this is a great video for new players. I never thought about boiling water by putting it on a fire, but that is a great way to clean it without requiring two containers. Is it faster to boil large quantities in that way or using the craft menu? Critiques: It might have been a good idea to mention using the direction key when placing your brazier. Also, you mention capital D to drink when it is capital E to drink, as capital D is for selecting where you want to drop items.
After years of cooking up the idea, decided to play it. Of course there is a lot to deal so I opted to search for a video. Expected the first ones to be full o memes and silliness. So glad to find this amazing material by an awesome creator. Loved your voice, cadence and balance of content and ease to drop into. Subbed
This is a really well put together guide! I used to play and got a fair ways into the game. Seeing new ways of doing things is always good, and there's a lot of small details that many guides miss here. Heck, I've learnt a few things that didn't occur to me! Good luck on future content! 😀
Thanks for the up-to-date and to-the-point guide! I've started watching a good bit of CDDA content to learn the game, but this was by far one of the easiest to watch. The tip about the tank on the roof is great, that's a lot of volume for liquids. I was hoping there was an easier way to boil large volumes of water, and this answers that as well. There's a lot to learn with this game for sure. Complexity may be one thing, but the real issue is learning the mechanics and interactions of in-game objects. I would love to see more.
So I've been playing for like 3 years and I only just learned the power (and silence) of deconstruction, the usefulness of a designated firewood pile, how hauling exactly works and the fact that water can and will boil on its own. I'll be able to survive city starts a lot easier now, knowing that deconstruction won't draw much attention.
Figured I should watch through this before watching through your series proper. After all, being able to have some idea of what’s going on seems like a pretty good plan.
I've played for years and yet still learned a couple things. Thanks. You might mention the current crafting goal more, like when you complete a milestone of getting your screwdriver, reiterate the goal of a brazier then water. I'm going to check out your channel Edit: try your best!
Been playing for a few months, but I never knew about picking up a number of items with number keys. However, I'll stick with the advanced inventory (/) as I find it easier to use. As the video said, there's no guarantees in finding most things. I usually find a town or farm long before encountering a car wreck. In those cases smashing an oven or fridge will net you a few chunks of steel and metal scraps for making a brazier. Just make sure there aren't any monsters too close since they'll hear you.
First shelter start I did had 3 wrecks outside, shelter was next to a medium city, and when I was smashing cabinets/benches the zombies began to break through the windows. So i had to fight with a plank. Fortunately the starting NPC had a double barreled shotgun. Unfortunately, he raced out of the building, gun blazing, making lots of noise, and ran out of ammo. Fortunately, there was a lot more noise going on a block away, enough to deafen us for hours and I kept distance from all the traffic of zombies going there. Unfortunately it was a pair .50cal M2HB automated turrets, and one night while exploring the trail of corpses I stumbled into one. RIP.
Protein ration are -1 health so I would advise to eat them only if desperate for food. It is better not to have a low health score (which btw is hidden and only viewable by debug) especially during first survival days. Getting a flu or a cold could be very obnoxious.
Thank you SO much for these CDDA videos!!! I've been wanting to get into playing and modding this game since I heard about it, but it was way too obtuse for me at first blush and the tutorial didn't help much. These vids have helped me enjoy the game to its fullest!
damn, i've played this game to the point of turning an apple orchard into a full-on electric-wired base and i never knew moving diagonally cost more time
Note on clothing, you will need to clean filthy clothing and you can get good armor from soldier zombies. Just some soap and water source to clean and a blunt weapon to kill the soldier and you will have a great start.
Today I found natural water, which was "spilled", and I can't pour it into a container (maybe I did something wrong, idk). It stalled me for a couple of minutes, but another puddle, fortunately, works. But anyway, great guide, it helps me a lot!
I have always found the way spilled water works to be confusing. IMO it should cease to be an object and turn into a field like the bloodstains that appear when you attack an enemy.
Went out looking for a car, kept bashing it forever nothing was happening, realized it was a military vehicle that was harder to bust, saw another car, but it was only dropping aluminum ingots realized its likely because it's an electric car. Got frustrated after about half an hour and headed north and found a brazier sitting at a campsite not far away lol at my time wasted.
You have such a clear way of speaking, I came here to see some Cataclysm gameplay as I'm curious about the game but now I want to see more videos. I look forward to more uploads on your channel! Also have you tried out the game Terminus?
I'm with the crowd here - Video good! Talk smart, me like! More pleeze! I realize this is off the topic, but.... (This is my first go at kitchen composting and I just want everybody to feel at home - I used to let the tomatoes have the dial, but they're outside now)
Everyone recommends to go with evacuee at the beginning, but I feel like this start is the slowest and the most boring one. And getting bored in this game is extremely dangerous. I personally prefer the Forgotten scenario (or however it is in English) where you start in a random house somewhere in the city. It requires some understanding of basic mechanics to escape from there but once you've learned it, it's getting pretty simple. On the other hand, during your escape you will most likely get the essential tools (hammer, screwdriver, backpack), food for the beginning, some books and some useful random loot, so you will be able to skip first week of grinding carpentry and move straight to where the fun begins
Not terrible advice if you've mastered the basics, but I went with the evacuee start so that I could show a consistent set of survival strategies to brand new players using a fairly predictable starting environment that they can play along with. I don't bother with evacuee in my regular playthroughs either.

I was watching the tutorial and being coached by my boyfriend on my first ever playthrough Didn't find a wreck, got a functioning car! So I trie going to a nearby road with autowallk Got interrupted by krek Its ok, went back inside So he told me to destroy the solar panel on the roof I do everything else Time to unmake the tank! Checked if the krek could see me, he couldnt got told by bf to keep going, I was safe "you heard glass shatering, are u sure you want to continue?" "its ok, keep going" Shit, they got Jorge I think I didnt check He didnt scream or nuthing Maybe he was mute or something, I didnt talk to him I finish destroying it go downstairs to check yep, thats a krek 4 tiles away from me I will cry myself to sleep in the roof, it is now the krek's house
I just started playing. No matter how many times i try, the "brawling" combat stile does not appear on the list when i wield the crowbar. Is it related to the 10 strenght and dexterity chosen from the beginning?
Nice, smashing locker does not give pipes anymore so i cant craft the crowbar iam doomed i will starve noooooooooo also, cant cut the clothing because i have no cutting tool with cuttin 2 or higher...

Well-Done;
Oh I'm waiting anxiously for Cataclysm 102 pls.
Just started watching your videos, they've been very helpful. Still trying to grasp how to do anything In this game.
I've played for years and yet still learned a couple things. Thanks. You might mention the current crafting goal more, like when you complete a milestone of getting your screwdriver, reiterate the goal of a brazier then water. I'm going to check out your channel
Edit: try your best!
RIP.
ayo, i read your LP over on something awful and loved it, glad you're making youtube videos now!
Good stuff. Haven't played in a few years, but I learned things. Not that I was the most knowledgeable player back than anyway.
love your voice, the tutorial was enough to know how to play this game and was an enjoyable video!
THANK you. You seem to understand what a new player is looking for to learn. peace
Great video. You have a wonderful voice!
Wow! This is a great tutorial for beginners. It's concise, well organized so it is not overwhelming. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
I stand corrected, awesome to see that you do more videos ! :D
Protein ration are -1 health so I would advise to eat them only if desperate for food. It is better not to have a low health score (which btw is hidden and only viewable by debug) especially during first survival days. Getting a flu or a cold could be very obnoxious.
This absolute champion has one video and it's a cataclysm tutorial what
Looks like it's time to download this game again. Subscribed
Thank you SO much for these CDDA videos!!! I've been wanting to get into playing and modding this game since I heard about it, but it was way too obtuse for me at first blush and the tutorial didn't help much. These vids have helped me enjoy the game to its fullest!
This is a really good guide! I’ve subscribed; looking forward to more content!

Oh boy. Oh boy. Another quality CDDA-tuber! Can't wait to see more!
I also joined the party and currently am making my own take on a cataclysm guide
@@Tucker454 Good to know, subbed, can't wait to check it out!
Awesome to start off with, thanks a ton WG.
Awesome stuff!
Just wanted to say hi. People have been recommending your video in the community, figured I'd have a look and say hello.
Hello fellow catatuber. Thanks for stopping by!
Very informatif. And i hope more video will coming
Girl, your a natural! Please upload moar :3

@@tss1473 what's wrong
damn, i've played this game to the point of turning an apple orchard into a full-on electric-wired base and i never knew moving diagonally cost more time
Note on clothing, you will need to clean filthy clothing and you can get good armor from soldier zombies. Just some soap and water source to clean and a blunt weapon to kill the soldier and you will have a great start.
thanks for helping me get in this awesome game
Today I found natural water, which was "spilled", and I can't pour it into a container (maybe I did something wrong, idk). It stalled me for a couple of minutes, but another puddle, fortunately, works. But anyway, great guide, it helps me a lot!
I have always found the way spilled water works to be confusing. IMO it should cease to be an object and turn into a field like the bloodstains that appear when you attack an enemy.
Thank you, I was lost with everything
Went out looking for a car, kept bashing it forever nothing was happening, realized it was a military vehicle that was harder to bust, saw another car, but it was only dropping aluminum ingots realized its likely because it's an electric car. Got frustrated after about half an hour and headed north and found a brazier sitting at a campsite not far away lol at my time wasted.
😂
Literally the lasted I have lasted it is currently 12 pm on the first, thank you
You have such a clear way of speaking, I came here to see some Cataclysm gameplay as I'm curious about the game but now I want to see more videos. I look forward to more uploads on your channel! Also have you tried out the game Terminus?
thissss is the best tutorial i've seen
I'm with the crowd here - Video good! Talk smart, me like! More pleeze!
I realize this is off the topic, but.... I wasn't sure if the UA-cam name was just a neat sounding title or more historically significant - like "Smith" or "Farmer"... in which case, what kind of music do you guys like? (This is my first go at kitchen composting and I just want everybody to feel at home - I used to let the tomatoes have the dial, but they're outside now)
this is a fantastic tutorial please do more
You speak in a clear and concise way. I appreciate that.
What a fantastic tutorial. Instant sub
Thanks!
I liked the part where you fought Skeletron Prime
Never knew you could boil water on a fire like that. Always used the cook action...
great guide.
Thank you very much for this video!
This video helped me out to much thankyou! ❤ I subscribed to your page!
Great video! Thank you
Hello, my name is Diarmuhnd, i'm here for the Cataclysm 101 class.
I'll just sit in the back, thank you Worm Girl.
I was just looking for some games to play, I downloaded it right now using home-brew, I thought this game was released in the early 90s or smth, but her passion says it all. cool game tho
u helped me start out in cdda :3
i checked - all clear, working.
in 0.F-3 Stable you are able to get pipes from lockers but i don't think it's a 100% drop chance tho, you'll need to break a few.
does boiling water work like in the video? that method isn't working for me
@@ev5837 It doesnt work in latest stable, only in experimental versions released at the date of this video's recording
@@Tucker454 Now it works in stable
Cool video for beginners!
Love cataclysmer.. playing since 2017
Great work. Very solid intro. You should do a combat video and more. 👐
Great tutorial! ❤❤
Fantastic tutorial ❤
I was watching the tutorial and being coached by my boyfriend on my first ever playthrough
Didn't find a wreck, got a functioning car!
So I trie going to a nearby road with autowallk
Got interrupted by krek
Its ok, went back inside
So he told me to destroy the solar panel on the roof
I do everything else
Time to unmake the tank!
Checked if the krek could see me, he couldnt
got told by bf to keep going, I was safe
"you heard glass shatering, are u sure you want to continue?"
"its ok, keep going"
Shit, they got Jorge
I think
I didnt check
He didnt scream or nuthing
Maybe he was mute or something, I didnt talk to him
I finish destroying it
go downstairs to check
yep, thats a krek 4 tiles away from me
I will cry myself to sleep in the roof, it is now the krek's house
I was told to _"get good Bambi"_
This game uses so many buttons I had to search and figure it out what the "forward slash button" was, Jeez
You press "?" At any time to bring up the relevant key binds in the game, no need to search the internet
Also the enter key can be used alternatively
thanks for the tutorial, any advice for Naked & Alone wilderness+remote starts? (I play steam version)
I hope you plan on making more vids
Thank you!
You're a saint
super concise
Yoooooooo i have to admitt im kinda sad to see that this is your only video i could def watch you play it longer so i might learn it xD
Neat video!
Short answer: *with pain and pleasure*
I just started playing. No matter how many times i try, the "brawling" combat stile does not appear on the list when i wield the crowbar. Is it related to the 10 strenght and dexterity chosen from the beginning?
You need to have one rank in melee skill.
Nice, smashing locker does not give pipes anymore so i cant craft the crowbar iam doomed i will starve noooooooooo
also, cant cut the clothing because i have no cutting tool with cuttin 2 or higher...
I believe the yield is somewhat randomized when you smash lockers, so try smashing more, but yes this guide is becoming a little outdated.
